Just seen this. Fingers crossed there’s no casualties. At that time in the early hours of a weekday morning (01:30 I think it was), you’d hope there weren’t many cars or pedestrians on the bridge. Anyone in a car that fell into the river though is surely a goner unless they didn’t panic and applied quick thinking underwater.

Absolutely dreadful. There are reports here on cars and people in the water, if so lots of dead people, I assume.
Have the speculations started yet? Terror?

My first thought was poor visibility but I’m sure that there will be a lot of investigations to determine one way or the other. It’s a huge blow to the State of Maryland. That port handled $80 billion of cargo last year so anything that makes transport harder will affect tens of thousands of jobs.

Shocking to see that. Hopefully casualties and sadly deaths will be at an absolute minimum.

The ships insurers, possibly UK based, will be panicking this morning.
Large commercial vessel's like this entering and leaving ports are required to be handled by a local pilot, he to is going to be very worried.
I would imagine there must have been engineering or steering problems.

Very troubling that, it collapsed like a pack of cards.
Thoughts to everyone involved and I pray the casualties are as few as possible.....

Horrific.
Described by local officials as a “mass casualty event”.

Blimey, its weird that as its not as if the gap that was needed to be navigated wasn't a bloody big target 😳 there might be more to this..

Horrific. Described by local officials as a “mass casualty event”. The second video seems to have been edited. The actual collapse of the bridge is far faster than the first video. Very strange

Why on earth do you need to travel through Baltimore to get to Sri Lanka?! I’m wondering if some daft, inexperienced fucker literally fell asleep at the wheel and when they woke couldn’t steer out of the way on time.

Very strange What seems apparent from the second video is that there was traffic on the bridge moments before impact… but thankfully, when it collapsed the bridge was clear. I certainly hope so anyway.

Apparently, they are looking for about 20 people (their city fire Dept correspondent). I suppose that’s guess work based on average numbers of cars on the bridge at the time. Outside temp was 30F. The water would have felt a hell of a lot colder (reported to be at 48F) even if they survived a 185 foot drop.
Utterly horrific.

I don't know how boats this big work but surely there's enough people on the bridge of the ship to avoid sleeping or drunk rogue captains? And how unlucky does one have to be to time their journey across this bridge just as a bloody big ship hits it. All very sad..

Surreal pictures to one of the largest Truss Bridges in the World
Apparently video pictures show the ship desperately trying to maneuver astern which would rule out sabotage plus there were two Pilots on board at the time of the catastrophic collision

Potentially looks like the engines have failed as smoke was apparently seen beforehand, and they've drifted into the bridge - however, surely it would take a good few minutes and a signal would have been raised? Maybe it was and we'll learn more as it develops.

Would a Singaporean ship owner use a British organisation to insure its vessels?

Would a Singaporean ship owner use a British organisation to insure its vessels? more often than not Lloyds holds the insurance on shipping risks, the reinsurance which will almost certainly be kicking in at this point is a really murky pond though that could be held anywhere and they will do anything to get out of paying!
