Couple of years ago their Carpathian Lynx, Flavil, escaped into Dartmoor National Park and was free for 3 weeks before he was caught but not before he’d killed a sheep or two to survive. Dartmoor Zoo happily paid compensation to the farmer but the Lynx had tasted freedom and became quite a handful at the zoo. Late February this year a female Carpathian Lynx Emily, donated by Karlsruhe zoo, was introduced to Dartmoor Zoo in an attempt to calm Flavil down and possibly mate. Great news that they quickly made friends and are expecting kittens in June. What’s more Flavil has calmed down and the staff are hoping he takes to being a good dad to his young ones.

Just another reason to love this beautiful region of the UK. Dartmoor is by far my most favourite place to see when I go back to the UK.

View AttachmentOn a slight tangent. Our beautiful and bonkers cat was run over and killed a couple of weeks ago. I am giving the driver in the village the benefit of the doubt, ie wasn't speeding. But Lola was a miniature panther in both looks and instinct. Never been known to back down in a fight. Whatever the odds. So if the driver was speeding then he/she might want to beware. Lola might come back full size. And eat you. Back on message. Your story is beautiful. Both Lola and I are wiping a piece of grit that has mysteriously blown into our eye.

It has everything - rolling hills, waterfalls, tors, good pubs and beaches.

A good story and I can't wait to see the reintroduction of lynx into this country. I went to see the Lynx few weeks ago after it had arrived at the zoo. Speaking at length to the zoologist, who was introducing Emily to Flavil, about the reintroduction of Lynx into the uk as wild animals, he said they were watching what was happening closely in European countries where they had been introduced. Of course the main issue is killing of livestock, however in the wilderness of Scottish Highlands wild deer have no predator so it is very possible that Lynx could be reintroduced into Scotland in order to help cull the deer population.

Less good news for the sheep involved. Yes but the sheep were killed out of necessity as opposed to last year, in our parish on Easter Weekend, 5 lambs and 2 ewes were killed by out of control dogs. I live in the South Devon AONB which attracts visitors from Plymouth & surrounding towns and many bring their dogs but don’t understand the risk to live stock. Dartmoor zoo happily compensated the farmer who’s sheep were killed by the escaped Lynx.

The Honeybadger - Nick, used to come into Bingil Bay Cafe here (our local) quite a lot a few years ago as he was mates with my son’s mate. Anyway, just Google ex-Wallabies players. The girls always liked to go up there as he did ads for Tradies jocks

Is it because they were slaughtered by out of control dogs or because the Lynx killed a couple to survive. The male Carpathian Lynx is around 45kgs and no they don’t attack humans.

Oh definitely in Scotland, also other wild areas when there are plenty of deer like Muntjac, I've been following the discussions for about 5 years.

Guess the Scottish dear population is out of control since Prince Philip carked it.

No, they are quite small and would keep away from humans and their dogs. Hopefully they'd kill thousands of domestic cats along with eagles killing cats as well.
