As avid footy enthusiasts, we’re all too familiar with some of the most ferocious football rivalries out there.
The likes of River Plate vs Boca Juniors, a twice yearly Argentine civil war where sometimes a game of football breaks out in the middle, or Galatasaray vs Fenerbache, a rivalry so deeply soaked in hatred to this day every single dartboard sold in certain regions of Turkey has a pattern of Graeme Souness’s face.
But what about the absolutely pointless ones? The ones that have you questioning how on earth that one even came about in the first place.
I’ll kick us off with Norwich vs Ipswich, a completely pointless “rivalry” about who’s Massey Ferguson can plough the turnip fields the quickest and who can get their sibling pregnant first, there’s about as much malice in that fixture than there is in a pillow fight at Thomas Hitzlspergers house.

Blackburn V Burnley Clash of the outside toilet and tin bath households In all my time following England I saw more fights between Blackburn/Burnley fans than any other, most fans just got along but they were forever scrapping after a few beers.......

I guess like a few , outside of the area , many would be a bit oblivious to it. They were beating each other up before they had electricity in Burnley apparently as you say... 1986

I think most of the women up there would get into a ring with anyone never mind the blokes. In 1968, when there was no separation between the open end and side terracing, Stoke were losing 0-4, but they still came charging at us with knives and bicycle chains. Had to climb over the wall to get out of the ground early in the second half. One of the few times I've left a game early.!!

Forest v Notts is pretty tame. I know they've not met in recent times but I did go to one in the old Division 1. Neil Warnock was County manager at the time. 1-1 draw, no edge, no tension, nothing. You'd think city rivals would at least raise a bit of something.

Crystal Palace and Brighton fell out over Alan Mullery in the 1970s and never made amends, didn't they?
The football version of Mike Baldwin and Ken Barlow still disliking each other 20 years after the Deirdre Barlow affair. Mike rolling his eyes when boring Ken walks into the Rover's and orders half a pint of mild. Ken spotting Mike spill ink from his fountain pen onto the carpet and muttering "typical Baldwin".

You'd think city rivals would at least raise a bit of something. Having lived in Nottingham for a long time now, there's just generally no negative regard for County at all in most Forest fans eyes, it reminds me somewhat of most Stoke fans' attitudes towards the Vale pre 90s. Generally quite positive and supportive. They've even had friendlies in recent years. I think Forest's success in the 70s and beyond and the relative competitiveness with Derby as a regional rival just means there's very little interest. Coupled with the fact County generally have more disdain for Mansfield, Chesterfield etc

Coupled with the fact County generally have more disdain for Mansfield, Chesterfield etc Notts County last finished above Forest in 1975/76, I think they have a similar rivalry that Vale/Stoke had until as you say Vale took over bragging rights in the city for a decade. If that happened in Nottingham I imagine it would fuel the rivalry......

Bar that glorious period in the 90s Stoke Vale is pretty much the definition of naff.
To be fair most people assume Port Vale is somewhere on the coast so don’t realise they’re close to us.
And us being generally crap and Vale even crapper doesn’t help.

More recently Fulham have developed a mutual loathing with Brentford, they sing songs about each other and stuff (not quite sure why). That has to be a contender for the shittest top-flight rivalry ever.

I don't like this post
This sort of thing legitimises the 'you have to be a big club' to matter
Rangers v Celtic for example is 80% armchair plastics that live nowhere near Glasgow and don't actually support their local team. Norwich and Ipswich is a pretty fierce one - two clubs who dominate their neighbouring counties and there's no love lost there whatsoever.
On the face of it Stoke v Vale is powerdpuff stuff if you want to big up Arsenal v Tottenham or whatever big club bollocks you want to bleat on about.
Sorry but in this case 'I'm out'

By the way, the only reason Bournemouth aren't mentioned in this thread is because they don't have a serious local rival. But if Dorchester Town, Weymouth or Hamworthy United ever make it into Bournemouth's division, that will be the naffest football rivalry of all time.

Chelsea and Fulham being seen as a rivalry that doesn't matter goes against that theory Not sure what you're basing the plastics cliche on re the Old Firm. Second and third generation fans all around the world pack pubs etc for that one and the biggest rivalry in football. Do you have to live in Glasgow to be passionate about either?
