If there is ever a reason for clubs to not to listen to fans when making decisions, threads like these are it.
It galvanises nothing, good players will want out, good players wont want to come.
It's a pitiful situation with no upside.
Relegation would be a disaster worse than anytime I've been watching Stoke when you consider finances, infrastructure.
Staying up will still equate to an embarrassing performance for a club that has dwarfed every other in spending power over the last 5 years.
Stay up, get the season over with and never think of it again.

We could yet finish quite high up the table in terms of position, so it might be a bit more than just "staying up". In terms of the game on Saturday, from a viewing perspective I'm looking forward to it despite the pressures. I'd prefer it to be a mid-table nothing game in terms of that, but I can't say I'd be looking forward to it as much as I am.

The other positive is it seems to have got the fans backing up the team in a very positive way. I ain't saying we are the "best" fans in the world but you have to admire the resilience of Stoke fans. Still turning out in huge numbers all things considered and doing wonders in dragging this team of misfiring misfits over the line. Let's hope we survive and the rebuild begins in earnest from May 🙏

How can any fan of the club be pleased we are in a relegation battle?
Just ludicrous!
We could well be back in the bottom 3 on sat and folk think that is ok? Give over! Its a totally unacceptable situation and seeing the efforts this bunch of charlatans are putting in now makes it all the more infuriating!
I stand by everything I have said about the club being a shambles form top to bottom with a poor squad of players and a manager I think was the wrong choice and who will not take us back to the promised land ( I would be over the moon if he proves me wrong).
it is right to get behind the team now and the club should thank its lucky stars it gets the excellent support it does. I still think we will be lucky to escape- but- and i will give SS some credit, he does seem to have ditched his silly ideas and has found the system to fit the players who are showing fight.
We are fortunate we have 2 or 3 players of genuine quality for this level.
I am more optimistic than i was as i thought we were decent sat and always looked the better side.
I just hope we get over the line with a couple of amazing results in the next two ( pressure is also on the play off chasers) and then seal the deal pretty much v Huddersfeild.

No I would say it is pretty wank as well. For 30 minutes against Leeds we looked like men against boys. We are so far away from being a promotion chasing team its unreal.
We are where we are because we cant score and we cant defend despite having 24 new players.
Avoiding relegation is crucial, but probably two-thirds of the squad will be here next season after basically proving they arent good enough.
We probably need a whole new defence, goalkeeper and attacking department in the summer. There isnt much upside looking forwards from our current predicament. The team/squad is no longer Championship standard.
The fact some posters are claiming that Burger and Bae are world-beaters destined for the Premier League shows it to my mind. They are both good footballers who are not exactly ripping up the league or we would be much higher. We have just got so used to utter crapness the last few seasons.

To go further than that - the only players I reckon are good enough to play for Leicester or Leeds in our squad would be:
Burger.
Bae / Baker / Tchamadeu perhaps get on the bench.
Even while Manhoef looks ok, the winger for Leeds (Summerville another Dutchy actually) was on a complete other level to any of our wingers.
We are not going to be chasing promotion next season with the squad we have.

Wilmott, McNally, Rose are all average at best, and they take it in turns to make silly mistakes every game and gift a goal, and we dont have a left-back. Hoever needs to go, and then probably Tchamadeu I would want to keep. I think if you are selling any of those players they would be lucky to sign for another championship side. Oh what I wouldnt give to see Souttar back

Rose has improved through the season. McNally can be brilliant on his day. But they are not the 2nd best defensive partnership otherwise we wouldnt lose so many games. Theres probably a stat that shows Iversen is the 4th best goalkeeper in the division for something very specific. It means nothing. Out of the 2 I would keep McNally as he does have the attributes. But we need an upgrade in central defence next season. Would you not agree?

The side is crying out for a solid spine with a couple of leaders in it to make Schumachers job easier.

They were asked a question about it, at the meet the fans forum, and harped on about squad numbers or something like that. Got to get a leader in there who can bang down the door of the owners and tell them where they are going wrong, problem is the owners keep employing these British no-hopers who are just grateful for the job and do as their told - maybe SS can be different. I think we have had 24 new signings this season and the very first player we signed was a left-back from Sheff U who was well into his thirties hardly kicked a ball in 2 years and was sub standard in the games he did start for us, but on top of this he has been injured for large parts and we also knew in January he was out till at least early March. 23 signings later and nobody at the club thought one of those 23 signings should be a left-back - we are totally fecked as a club with that kind of mindset. A story came out about Rowett asking for some competition at LB for Pieters and he was, apparently told, if he wanted another LB he would have to sell Pieters first - now we can't know whether that story is true, but when you look at the evidence and what has gone on at the club - then you start to think there must be some truth to all these stories we here about going on in the background. It's surely not against the law to have 2 players competing for a position is it? Was the Rowett story before or after he had squandered all that transfer money? It might not be against the law but 2 people competing for the same spot is one extra wage at a time when we can't afford it. It's simple short-term economics just like we all exercise in our own lives. Perhaps we all would like 2 cars but some of us can only afford one. If the one we have is not performing for any reason then we make do and mend until such time as we can afford to buy another. But we brought in 9 forward players in those 24 signings, is it really a push to have 2 left-sided defenders, we have nowhere near 9 defenders in the squad across the entire back 4. At this moment in time we arguably don't have a solitary viable left sided defender in the squad, we have 2 right-sided defenders, 3 goalkeepers, so why so short in central defence and L/B. Mark Hughes, Gary Rowett, AN, MON all banged on quite a lot about about the importance of having at least 2 competitive players for each position, some of them so much so you wonder whether they were having a back handed swipe at the club/transfer policy, AN went one step further and said they failed in the last summer window to get enough numbers/competition in certain positions across the squad - citing the centre of defence as his main concern. There are 25 players in each championship squad, if you can count then you should be able to have a balanced squad with competition for each position. I mean the people in charge of our club own a betting company, they of all people should be able to count and also know the odds of you being able defend well are stacked against you when you have a threadbare defence - how many years now have we been playing square pegs in defence?

Yeah that’s what I remember. I thought around March we pulled away. So maybe not too dissimilar this season. I did think at the time that team did have a bit of quality and should pull clear. This team is a lot more unproven and has less depth on the bench hence why this feels a more dangerous situation to me. In week 40, we were two points above the drop and sitting in 21st: www.worldfootball.net/schedule/eng-championship-2019-2020-spieltag/40/In week 42, we were 4 points above and in 20th. I understand the idea of the team being “unproven”. However, both were still shite enough to drop. We could have very easily gone down under MON and a similar good run of form at the end of this season under SS will see us finish around 14th as well. Fair point. According to wiki though we pulled away at the start of March. And I kind of remember it that way. But obviously that’s just wiki!! Either way I think (hope!) a successful relegation battle could be a catalyst for an upturn.

Stay up and never think of it again? Isn’t that the problem? We’re not learning from our mistakes. Maybe the club shouldn’t listen to the fans as you say….especially the negative ones.

I agree with most of what you say above. As I stated earlier on this thread, I have no idea why we have such an imbalanced squad at the moment.I don't think it is Coates' fault. They trust the manager (head coach) and the Tech Director to buy the players. I agree that we are lacking defensive cover and seem to have an addiction to buying midfield players. Tricky Ricky and AN should be able to explain that. My original comment was aimed squarely at the point you were making that Rowett was not allowed to buy another left back to challenge Pieters. My point being that Rowett was allowed to spend £50MM on shite so is in no position to criticise given that his own failings were probably responsible in part for the financial situation we were in. I am pretty sure we could have recruited a LB a CF and 2 wingers for less than the £30MM we spent on Afobe,Ince and McClean. Hindsight and all that.

Pearson? I’d prefer to go for quality rather than quantity this summer and strengthen again in January. One way or an other this is going to continue to be work in progress for the foreseeable of which I’m not happy about. Seven years to get on the straight and narrow is an awful long time for a club with our resources.

You rebuild gradually with good players brought in to compliment what you’ve got over 3/4 windows. Plus signing so many who didn’t have any experience of the league was insane. Plus the lack of genuine quality up top or at the back. Plus the GK situation remains uncertain.
