You would want to be subbed with 5 to go to get into that nice warm clean bath early. No showers back then

You would require a different level of fitness to play on pitches like that as they must have been energy sapping

Oh for a Jimmy Greenhoff type of player now ,and a Hudson who could pass a ball to a Stoke player no problem !!

I was actually there that day. Right behind the goal where Greenhoff scored his brilliant brace quite late in the game. The forwards were Greenhoff, Hurst, Salmons, Moore and Hudson. The Baseball Ground was always a quagmire in those days and football was a man’s game. You did not see much back passing then. Stoke we’re near the top of the old first division at that time.

Went on the train that day. It was fantastic. I remember the team bus driving past us on the walk from the station. Popside!
Running up and down those terraced streets after the game on the way back to the station.
Memories!

Yes, I was there as well. Popside brings back "memories" 😁
Hudson and Greenhoff, and the rest, were brilliant.
Great day !
I remember Huddy breaking his leg at Derby following an "agricultural" tackle by Bruce Rioch - I think it was a night match wasn't it.

The Derby fans in there were alright.

So was I. I remember Hudson's strength and skill in that mud (that back heal in the build up to the second goal) and Greenhoff's finishing. Happy days. Never thought after that match that Derby would go on to win the league and really thought we stood a chance but I think the broken leg Smith suffered the following week was the straw that broke the camel's back. I'm pretty sure we already had Richie, Robertson and Pejic out with broken legs which in those days of small squads was devastating.

The book of clichés about how brilliant old football was on every old clip
On the other hand, not one of those players would cope with the pace of today's game

Sad to say (from a years gone by aspect) I was there. Said it before my first away game and it’s been downhill ever since. 😉 but I honestly can’t think fo better result may be spurs away 0-1 whelan but this’s result should have set us up for our only ever title win

My fondest recollections of that day were two-fold - Walking away from the ground in the pouring rain totally convinced that we were on the verge of becoming English champions and Standing in the said pouring rain from about 2:15 when a fellow Stoke fan about 6’-7” tall wearing a pacamac came in late and stood right in front of me and my mate, Frank. Frank told him to shift, which he ignored. He asked him again to move and again he ignored him. Frank said ‘if thee dunna shift, I’ll shift yer”. Again said giant ignored Frank, at which point Frank got out his cigarette lighter and set fire to his pacamac! At this point the giant bloke managed to douse the flames and crucially shifted! This is a true story by the way.

I just remember thinking what a dump it was round the Baseball ground and how glad I was really that my mates dad had insisted on accompanying us.

Neither were the fastest but their skill, strength and understanding of each other was a delight. I have never seen another finisher of Greenhoff's quality especially on the volley.

Surroundings of the old Baseball Ground were very similar to both our Victoria Ground and Maine Road. Remember you parked your car up outside those sort of grounds and a kid would shout "Look after yer car Mr" and you'd give him 50p cos you knew his mates would be letting the tyres down or smashing the light if you didn't. The thing which I found strange at Derby was how the home fans were down one side in the paddock underneath a stand where they couldn't see anything that went above eight feet high. It's probably where Clough developed his philosophy of playing along the ground.

I was there and that team formed my first proper memories of Stoke City. What a team. Greenhoff was my love (I was only 7 and didn’t understand just how good Huddy actually was) but what a first love to have. My two earliest traumas were Banks’s crash and Jimmy being sold to the Shit. Been plain sailing since then…

But then I was never ambushed in or chased around the church yard.
