It was a brilliant night. Great to see all the old Boys back together, telling stories of what was a much better (and simpler) time!! Lou Macari was very much a Pulis manager. All the players kept saying how he had them running relentlessly in training. Thousands of laps of the pitch. Running around the streets of Stoke. Focused on fitness above everything else. Never once analysed or spoke about the opposition apparently either. Just focused on what we were going to do and always believed that was enough. It was interesting to hear Cranson talk about Siggy. Apparently when we signed him he was very "raw". He said Chic Bates fell out with Lou because he told him he was basically garbage but Lou had spent money on him (only around 20k though). They all said Siggy was an absolute machine. A monster of a defender and they loved him, so God knows what Chic saw in him!! They all spoke about how tough our defenders used to be. Cranson. Siggy. Whittle. Sanford. Overson. Said they were horrible to play against in training. And now we have the likes of Rose and Hoever 😪 Also, Sheron said he struggled at Norwich because he roomed with Mike Milligan and he was basically an alcoholic!! Said he fell into bad habits and lost his way. Lou said he couldn't believe his luck that he managed to swap Keith Scott for Sheron!!! They had a few laughs about that!! Brilliant night.

Just seen the advert promoting it as an evening with SAS, so it must have been an unexpected bonus with the others there! It’s amazing how much the game has changed and how many different roles now exist within clubs these days. Lou always rubbished talk of tactics and no doubt he is still of the same opinion. Cannot imagine today’s players running around the streets of Stoke… and certainly not living in the streets of Stoke!! www.stokesentinel.co.uk/sport/football/football-news/stoke-city-mark-stein-macari-1504978.amp

Chic’s idea of a good centre half was Steven Tweed! Probs explains why he did badly as a manager for us
Chic’s idea of a good centre half was Steven Tweed! Probs explains why he did badly as a manager for us
Impossible to know, but I reckon we wouldn’t have been relegated had we stuck with Chic in 97/98. Madness to sack him after bouncing back from the 0-7 with a win in the next game. Terrible that he has had dementia since 2013. Never realised he comes from West Brom and his real name is Philip Desmond Bates… en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chic_Bates

I’ve often wondered why we’ve never relied on Lou’s eye for a player since he retired. If I’m involved at Stoke and we are looking a player a or player b, I’d be enlisting Lou to just go take a look, in a scouting capacity, for me. Keep him away from looking at goalkeepers obviously, but I’m sure he’d have been of some use over the years and given his affection for the area and the club, I’m sure he’d have been delighted to help if asked.

Yeah goalkeepers were a real blindspot for him! Though I have to admit, despite his clangers, I quite liked Prudders
