Great player. Another typical German player who never gave in and seemingly always found a way to win. He scored the 85th minute penalty in the 1990 World Cup Final to beat the Argies. Reports saying it was cardiac arrest.
RIP

Didn't he score the goal that bounced off Parker and over Shilts?

Always felt that West German side of the 1990s maybe doesn't get the respect it's deserved partly because the final was crap - what a side they had!
Cracking player RIP

What sad news. He was fantastic. Used both feet and was more like a midfielder at times. Scored a pearler v Netherlands at Italia 90. Then nerves of steel for the winner in the final. Another great gone. πͺ

They were far and away the best team in the tournament Lothar Mateus bulldozing through the Yugoslavia defence and unleashing that rocket is a great memory from Italia 90. Brehme was world class. Used to irritate me though when our commentators used to call him 'Andy' RIP Andreas.

Shocked Best left wing back ever(?) I'm shocked too. He was a very likable person, but he wasn't even a fullback to start with. He was a midfielder who just slotted in where he was needed. Irrespective of that, I think there's quite a number of lbs that were better. Fachetti and Cabrini for instance.

Brehme and Matthaus were the stand out players in 1990. Great players. Wasn't the greatest WC or final but those two were excellent.
Sad news

In the world cup final he was definitely a fullback only, a very attacking one, but not part of a system that employed wingbacks.

His timing and reading of the player and ball and when to tackle was absolutely bob on...... CHannel 4 Sunday afternoons.....Italia football Pushing Maldini as the best left back ever.....? Its a close call....! RIP....

A guy every genuine football fan and every UK citizen has cause to be thankful for.
His penalty defeated the cynical, anti-football Argentina side led by the uber cheat himself. They only won two games and scored five goals to get to the final, only had one shot in the final, and played for penalties from the off, so it was fitting they lost to one.
If carling made penalties - well this was the best one, ever.
RIP

Impossible to call as very different types of players Series A from about the time English clubs banned from Europe to sometime in the late 90's possibly the best league anywhere ever?

Got me thinking now Got it in my head they played wing backs Perhaps they didn't or perhaps switched in different games From memory they played with a sweeper for the most part as did England with Mark Wright. Brehme and Berthold(who Gazza crogged) were the full backs with Buchwald, Augenthalter and Koehler in the middle.
