That was a shitter, but we finished 11th that season and 8th the year before which feels like utopia compared to now. When you think that Mills was sacked for finishing around 10th to 12th it makes you feel a little nostalgic doesn't it? We were going down, just 6.0 at Swindon after spending some actual money that summer

It feels worse because it’s so soulless Yes it's not the worst but it's the most soulless

Here's a link to our league history. en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Stoke_City_F.C._seasonsYou'll struggle to find a more sustained period of utter dogshit in our entire history than what we're going through right now...and there's no guarantee that it's going to end any time soon.

I think perhaps it is, certainly in the modern era. If we go down this season I’d say it must be. Even if we stay up, this will be the eighth successive season when we’ve finished in the bottom half of the league we are playing in. Has it ever been this bad before? It doesn’t feel like it to me….. Absolutely no where near We've sunk to far lower depths It is however the longest dullest shitest period have experienced, relentless dullness understand the spell in division 2 in the 50's was dull The difference now is we have had millions We haven’t though have we, we’ve sunk to slightly lower depths - which we’re on the brink of plumbing again

In terms of a prolonged period with no challenge at the top end of the league we are in though?

In my time this is definitely the worst.
I just missed the 80s misery and I personally loved the 90s.
We had Stein, Sheron and Thorne in the 90s. That's 30 years of goals by our usual standards!
What we've had the last five years has been so horrible that I actually hate going most of the time. I turn up every week and we hardly even try to win.

It is a cluster fuck

I can feel us sliding towards something catastrophic. There is just something in the air that feels completely fucked. No manager can turn this around right now.
Who is to say if we slide to league one, it ends there?
These are dark days ahead of us and as fans we must show unity where possible because I think it's just the tip of the iceberg.
I don't think it's all their fault and I don't doubt there passion and love for the club, and I don't fully know why, but it just feels like it's time for the Coates family to call it a day at the end of the season.
Praying I'm wrong and this shit show magically turns around but by the law of averages and applying reason, I can't quite see how that's possible. A shit team, a handful of guys who give a shit, a manager with just 18 months experience, a board that are painfully out their depth... To name a few of the current challenges.

We did actually have some decent periods during the 80s though. 82/83 was pretty memorable and the second half of the 83/84 season wasn't too bad when Hudson returned. That run during the winter of 86/87 was breathtaking at times and we had a short period when Peter Beagrie was sometimes worth the admission fee alone. We've barely got an attacking player now as good as Phil Heath was at times!

During those times though, there were no more than a couple of consecutive seasons that were bad. This has been 4 years of mostly absolute shite. That’s what I’m getting at. Even the 80’s had some good stuff interspersed with shite. The 90’s started badly and ended badly but we had the Macari era inbetween. In terms of league position it’s clearly not the worst in our history, but I’m with you, it’s the least enjoyable period since I’ve been watching Stoke in the early 90s. Sure we had bad seasons, but never that many in a row, and there were good spells too. I think the difference is we have wealthy owners, great facilities, and so much potential, it’s the hope that kills you.

No. But this era is possibly the worst for mismanagement and use of available resource. We have a few shiny pretenders in the structure living la Vida loca - if you get my drift

Must be close. Especially considering we've entered this period starting as a Premier League club with one of the richest owners in the land. Thourougly despressing. That's the issue isn't it. TP had us settled as an established Prem team and Hughes embellished this for his first 3 years. Then it has been a crazy, crazy decline even though we have the financial muscle to compete. Under Mills, Ball, Little, Kamara, even TP#1 we were skint.

That was still a really enjoyable season, way better than anything post Mark Hughes.

It’s not even close, pretty shit, but not even close. When would you say was worse. In a prolonged period of time? . Second half of the 80’s for me. Obviously it depends on your age and what you’ve seen as a Stoke fan. I’ve only ever known us as second or third tier so whilst we’ve declined in recent times, for me we’ve returned to where I’ve always known if that makes sense? And we peaked in the PL. Others will have followed us in the 70’s and see our place in the top flight maybe?
