The ball retrievers (to cater for ball boys/girls) sit on them little plastic stools pitchside with their hoods draped over their heads & they look really disinterested when the ball go's out of play near them, they kind of look at the next one along like they'll grab it for them! Anyone remember the days at the Victoria Ground where the ball boys/girls would run out with their 'Dale Sports' bibs on to the centre circle, turn and wave to the crowd and then sprint off and run to their area of the perimeter track! They were clearly more disciplined & coil spring like back in the day 😉🤣 The kids of today

In fairness, they were probably frozen to those stools.

Wasn't she or one of them Jackie Marsh's daughter?

Yeah seem to remember it being introduced for a short time at the Brit and yeah Jackie Marsh's daughter being a participant definitely rings a bell! Don't even get them on the Grand Prix starting grid now do ya. They used to do similar on the boxing between rounds & used to walk the darts players out in tournaments. The multi ball system convo's taken a bizarre direction hasn't it ?! 😉🤣

Hate saying this as they're only nippers and is it really worth moaning about but our ball boys don't seem very good. Doesn’t help that when they did get the ball back on to the pitch quickly whilst the ball was in the crowd, Some knob thought it would be funny to throw the ball on the pitch whilst the game was in play This was just in front of me. A kid who was perhaps 9 or 10 chucked it back. The worst bit about it was his dad was giddy with excitement when the ball landed next to them and encouraged him to throw it back, with zero acknowledgment of the stage of the game and what that would entail. Brain dead would be a polite description, it properly wound me up.

More importantly Schuey has us offering some urgency at throw ins before players get marked up. I've definitely noticed an improvement in finding space and potentially catching the opposition out.

I know it’s a contentious issue complaining about the ball boys/girls so moving away from that….Wouldn’t it be common sense for any club to use ball boys / girls from the clubs academy system? Young players who might have a bit more awareness of the match going on. For example knowing when to slow down / speed up play and a basic understanding of where the ball needs to be returned to. I don’t understand why our ball boys/girls aren’t trained to have a ball in their hands ready to get the play moving when we are chasing a game. It might not seem much but for me the attention to detail that is still lacking at the club sometimes. All they need to do is have the ball boys sit by the spare balls on the tees by the side of the pitch. That way when the ball goes out of play near them they just pick the tee'd up ball and throw it to the player. THEN they can run off and retrieve the other ball and return it to the tee ready for the next time. That way all the running around and fumbling the ball and falling over and comedy throwing by spectators takes place while the ball is back in play and not while the player is standing twiddling his thumbs waiting to take the throw in. It's not bloody rocket science. Our ball boys yesterday were miles away from the spare balls. Only Stoke could balls up the ball boy/multiball system. Exactly this, they sit the wrong side of the advertising board. Really not difficult to put right

But all they need to do is position themselves the other side of the boards from the ball and then just lean over and pick the ball up and throw it to the player. Then fetch the missing ball to replace it and sit down again. It's not hard.

I felt I had to be kinder to the fan and assume he was trying to be helpful😁😁 Funniest part actually was then the ball girl lost her shit at whoever did it 😂

Is it the job of the young kids to keep the ball in play or are the balls there for the players to pick up and use rather than wait for the ball to return? The ball boys don't keep the balls with them, just return them to the stands. For ne yesterday it was their players taking the mick time-wasting rather than any major issues with the kids. Ruddy followed a ball all the way to the sideline rather than pick up the one he passed. He probably shouted the ball boy to pass it to him if it was thrown to him in error 100%…no matter what system we have the players will always take the piss…it’s up to the Ref to clamp down on it…oh, wait a minute…the Refs don’t know what day it is most games.

Bring back that super ball boy that refused to give that opposition player Rory’s drying towel for a throw in.
Top kid he was ‘one ball boy, there’s only one ball boy’!!

Watched us play Tottenham at Wembley a few years back and their multi ball system was managed by academy players / young professionals (18-21 years olds). Such a benefit for the team in helping them manage the game. I often thought why do we have 10 year olds doing this for our club.

I don't understand why a player can't just go and pick up a spare ball. If every ground had spare ones in similar areas it wouldn't be difficult. I think it's just a time wasting tactic to be honest. I'm all for an introduction of turning throws over to the opposition if they haven't been taken within 20 seconds of the ball going out of play unless there is an injury or substition or other reason left to the ref's discretion.

Get them some of those Spike Milligan long arms then. Being serious though it's one of my bugbears. Ruddy took the absolute piss on Saturday from the 2nd minute onwards. And that slow dad 'run' to the touchline to pick the ball up for a throw 'running' past one of the tee'd up balls in the process took the biscuit. If they can't reach let them have a spare ball on their side of the boards then as well as the ones on the tees pitchside. As I've said it's not rocket science and it would speed the game up no end, especially in the latter stages. That said refs really do need to get a grip. They're booking players for toe poking the ball away a few yards which wastes precisely no time but allow Ruddy to amble like a syphalitic tramp, half the width of the pitch and back wasting about a minute in taking a goalkick.

its a hangover from COVID, moved to this system with balls on stands rather than ball boys retrieving and giving to the players. Seems as though the ball boys, that are young kids and will only know this new system, aren't used to the old way of recycling the balls quickly and getting them back to the players.. Also felt as though we had too few balls at the game as well, FFP cutting back? haha

The problem is the advertising hoardings, they are not supposed to climb over them and must stay behind them. Blame Vis vest man and the health and safety brigade. Funny how footballers are allowed to clatter the hoardings from pitch side though.

Ruddy was actually telling the brum fans in the front few rows to keep the ball for a bit and then throw it back when the ball boys had got another one sorted. If they are going to use this multi ball then do it right with more kids and more balls.

Haven’t Plymouth got any up and coming ball boys / girls we could poach?
They do seem to be supervised and ‘coached’ by someone on the West Stand side , who stands by the corner flag by the Boothen
whilst I’ve long thought it should be the role of senior academy players , its important to say if any of the ball boys / girls ( or their parents ) are reading this ..don’t take anything written on here too much to heart .. id have loved to do it when younger , but probably would have been all fingers and thumbs and I’m sure in the pressure moments when we’re chasing a game or trying to slow it down its not quite as easy as people would have you think for young children to get it right ..especially when 50% of the players at any one time will either want the ball returned quicker or slower .. Enjoy the experience and don’t worry too much about what old fogeys like me think
