Does anyone know how many training sessions The Stoke City FC first team have per week?
Me and my older brother (who has been a coach himself at some smaller clubs) have very divided opinions on how many it could be.

My quess would be 10-15 hours a week max.depending on midweek matches. 4x sessions a week average. There must be an ex-pro footballer on here who can confirm current standards within the game...or even a dog walker from Trent Vale who sees the players coming and going from Clayton Woods.

That seems a little low to me. Most top athletes do two, some three, training session per day in other sports. While this may sound like much, not all sessions are heavy physically. They do stamina training, technical training, support (strength, mobility). In football we have tactical and team cohesion training as well. I hope we do as much, at least during pre-season and then take it down a notch during the season. Matches are hard training, so that's what will get cut.

I think that it depends on the Manager, and we have had some who make very little effort to "train".

I seem to remember though that Marc Hughes for example was not very enthusiastic about training regimes, and one Stoke player, Mark Wilson publicly called him out on it, saying "we don't practice defence", or similar words.

You'd have to guess at a couple per day, including weight sessions and video reviews etc , Wednesday off and a light one on a Friday.
6/7ish?

Ah now didn't realise you were going that far back

I think that it depends on the Manager, and we have had some who make very little effort to "train". And there's been plenty of evidence to support that in that the past 7,8 years. Before Schu came, we had constantly out-of-condition players, easy to injure who couldn't execute even fundamentals correctly. Only now are we seeing improvements out of some. We dug a deep hole to get ourselves out of.

And then it didn't help at all, and the players came back from Dubai or wherever after the World Cup more unfit than ever! Schuey hasn't said anything about it, we just see it from the training vids

It's swings and roundabouts, or actually cones and hoops, but training can be different things to different people. A tactically minded Manager might well say get the ball out wide to Garry on the wing, but if Garry can't get there or run very far when he does, the whole process is pointless. I would always favour a fitness strategy over patterns and tactics, as at the end of the day the fit team that finishes the game as the strongest is always going to have an edge.

its like the old days under Pulis, they used to get the cones out and play 5 a side quite often, the lads worked aard but the cones usually won

The old methods are still the best. Stanley Mathews used to run from the ground after training and run uphill through Hanley Park to his Father's Barber shop in Hanley.

Although Wilson's intelligence was in turn called out by Mark Bowen (then Assistant Manager), who confirmed that they did do defence practices, but that maybe Wilson didn't see them as such.

Schuey hasn't said anything about it, we just see it from the training vids I think SS has commented on it, but in a manner which deflected criticism of the previous regime. He empahsised that players play so many matches in December that they hardly had time to train. Which is true. Rvery new manager makes some sort of comment on the physical condition of players, it must be on page 1 of the managers' guide book on how to put their foot down in their first week.

Sat - Game Sun - Rest Mon - Light training Tue - Mid training Wed - Full training Thu - Mid training Fri - Tactical training Sat - Game Sun - Rest
There will obviously be a mixture of fitness, gym, tactical, analysis and individual training. Sessions are probably 2 hours, lunch, further 2 hours. Mon & Fri are probably single session days.
Mid week games would change things.
