I'm looking at kitchen tables online.
If the table has a depth of 80 cm and the lamp above is going to be centered, what is the suitable width of such a lamp?
40 cm? 50 cm? 60 cm?
I'm looking for something made of glass, wood or a white plastic one.

If he wants it to look like he’s being interrogated in one of those Swedish detective series’. I imagine his place looks a bit like that anyway

Musik is a minor recurring character in a Wallander novel. Appears when the protagonist needs some inspiration from somebody with a different perspective on things.

So, take 80 and the lamp height above the table and do the math, it might just work with some fudging of numbers...or not.

All right, I was bored and did the golden ratio myself. Table is 80 cm deep/wide..., so take 1.618 and multiply by 80 to get the height we want the lamp over the table. We get around 129 cm above the table. Now take 80 and divide by 1.618 and we get around 50 cm for the lamp diameter. So, I'll say pick the 50 cm lamp. Of course I'm used to imperial units, so for we hoople-heads over here that still understand fractions, we're looking at a 19-20" diameter lamp that's around 4 feet give or take a couple inches over the table. Now one can massage the numbers a little by varying the height (since that would be the most variable here) to make it work for what lamps are available. Basically what we've learned here is it depends really on the height above the table. I'm willing to bet 80cm for a table is an average table size such that most lamps from 40 to 60 will "look" acceptable over it. So again, go with the 50 cm lamp.
-- and if any of you idiots reading this checks my math and I'm wrong, just keep it to yourself please.

Just measured the distance between the table surface and the lamp I have now and it was 70 cm. The existing lamp has the width 38,5 cm. I have thought about hanging the new lamp on the same height.

Hmm. I had 8 lamps to choose from, but when I looked at the proper watt numbers there were only two left. I'm that kind of guy who really want to see what I'm doing or eating. To sit in the dark gives me a headache. 60 w simply isn't enough.
Only the two plastic ones left actually. One is 60 cm and the other 48 cm. I'm talking width now.

Without starting another thread ... What is the suitable max watt for a lamp in the ceiling in the living room and above a kitchen table?
I've seen lots of lamps now online and so far most of them has a max watt of 60. That's too little for me. The current lamps I have now: Kitchen 120 w (over the table) Living room 120 w (a bit down from the center of the ceiling) Bedroom 125-200 w (a bit down from the center of the ceiling).
The lamps I'll buy is to replace the one in the living room and the one in the kitchen.
I know most peoples lamps nowadays are Led lamps, and so are mine. So the numbers above aren't Led watt numbers ...
I prefer three stage (a dimmer function built in) led lamps. These are hard to find though, if you want 12, 13 or 15 as max watt.

Musik, I have along-held theory that you're not Swedish and are sat at home in Penkhull writing under a nom de plume. Please don't dissuade me of this opinion as I prefer it!

Going for a white plastic lampshade that stands 15 W Led max. In old watt values it means approx 120 w.
Seen a shop that has just a couple of them left. Going early tomorrow. They have a 50% discount this month.
Problem is the cable offered. It only stands 60 W, in Led W values approx 5-7 w.
So I have to search and buy that elsewhere plus a lamp holder, also sold separately. The specs for the lampshade says 15 w Led.
