Just seen on the news that AI is catching people discarding litter from their car. It's not AI...Its CCTV cameras and software programmed, by a human, to catch offenders. AI Is a myth it is programmed by humans. If you link up thousands of lap tops they will not start WW3..However if a smart hacker hacks into NORAD he could in theory launch missiles. It's not AI...Its a spotty face nerd with a degree in IT..

I dunno but it's going to be hilarious watching the more histerical contributers to the internet fall spectacularly for AI generated content a la Mark Ruffalo last week.

People who work in technology, including myself, have been warning about this for a while and advocating for a technology tax or universal basic income. Alot of jobs have already been replaced by AI and automation. Too many people who want to defend big corporations though who's priority is increasing profits for share holders. Eventually we will become more and more dispensible. Worrying times ahead.

As with previous tech buzzwords the usual bunch of chancers are spouting on about it without actually knowing what they are on about.
I had a meeting with a client about an app we are developing for them last week.
Client: could we use AI to do that ? Me: what do you mean when you say AI ? Client: Er....

Long hours during planting and harvesting much less at other times. With the Industrial Revolution working hours became longer and longer and younger and younger children were forced to work because basic pay wasn't enough. Life expectancy was low and disease rife. With the advent of Unions workers claimed some measure of the profits being made through lower and less working days. Life expectancy increased. I have long advocated UBI but Productivity, distribution of Wealth and provision of Public Services are the key. Looking at the calibre of our current Career Politicians, most I wouldn't trust to run a Whelk Stall, will require a major overhaul of how Society is planned The Scandinavian Model is the closest today.

But hasn’t this been going on for many years it’s just a new buzz phrase that makes it sound a very modern thing. For example isn’t going to the ATM at the bank, self check outs at supermarkets, automated fruit picking or even GPS a form of AI?

In terms of risks facing the world artificial intelligence is without doubt bang up there but still lags a long way behind the existential and continual threat of real stupid!

No... Cuz someone had to programme them. So AI has the ability to think and make decisions? No thanks. AI uses machine learning techniques to basically educate itself. The more information you feed into it, the more you get out of it. Automation is a robots arms where the brain is the human programming it to do specific actions. AI is the robot brain where its then telling the robots arms what to do based on knowledge it acquires. Automation would be like one of those coffee machines where it will make you a coffee at the press of a button. AI would be providing the coffee machine with data on how everyone in the house likes their coffee and what times they usually have coffee each day. AI would then automatically make a unique coffee for everyone in the house without being asked based on what it's learned. Probably not the best way to explain it. I'm all for AI because it can and should make everyone's lives easier. The problem is now companies like amazon are replacing warehouse staff with AI robots and the only person who benefits from that is Jeff Bezos. In my opinion AI should be used to make everyone's lives easier not to make the lives of those at the top easier and the rest of ours harder. In a capitalist society I'm not sure if it will be used for our best interests.

AI is being pushed into everything, from health care to factory work. I honestly don’t see a situation where greedy corporations decide to employ people in decent paying jobs as opposed to generating robots to carry out automated tasks. Forced UBI that barely covers living (never mind saving up for family holidays) and food stamps for maximally processed food with no alternatives are the future I expect to be pushed forwards for all but a very select few. Couple that with algorithms that are increasingly improving how people interact with social media and you have a lovely, subservient mass population.

There is AI that doesn't use ML: cloud.google.com/learn/artificial-intelligence-vs-machine-learningA lot of what gets called AI isn't really. Like "smart" TVs, fridges etc. It's just marketing. The likes of ChatGPT and Google Bard aren't really AI in the way most people think - all they do is predict the likely next words. I'm amazing that some seemingly intelligent people said they're sentient.

It's not AI...Its a spotty face nerd with a degree in IT.. OK - so what exactly is real artificial intelligence? Or for that matter what is real intelligence? And once you have defined real intelligence are you saying it would be impossible to create an artificial version of it and if so why? My take is: 1 AI isn't the equivalent of human intelligence. AI is not sentient. 2 AI isn't the same as traditional programming. In traditional programming the programmer writes a program that produces a specific output for a specific input. In AI the programmer creates a program that is capable of analysing a range of inputs and producing a range of outputs that the programmer has not predetermined but is a very good fit to the question asked. The program autonomously generates the output based on what it has learned rather than what the programmer has told it to do in any given circumstance. 3 Traditional programs made certain routine jobs redundant. AI will make a set of less routine jobs redundant. 4 AI raises the issue as to how far computers should make autonomous decisions without a human being in the loop. In your example should a computer automatically issue a fine for littering based on its analysis of CCTV footage? The programmer just writes the initial program and walks away - it is the program that is doing the analysis and (potentially) making the decisions based on the results of its autonomous analysis of the data. It does not need to be sentient to do that - it just needs people to let the program do it on their behalf. 5 Just dismissing AI because it isn't sentient is missing the point of the issues it raises.

If everything is easy no effort is required. Then we become mentally retarded and suffer from atrophy soon. It's the effort that gives us the possibility to maintain our attributes. The brain in particular. Some people have told me lately with AI we don't have to work (that much), and we can do whatever we like, write poems, go fishing or collect stamps. Excuse me, but, why does anybody think this will be financed?

Excuse me, but, why does anybody think this will be financed? It can improve quality of life and allow people to pursue their passions and be more involved in their communities. I'm sure most people who work do so to pay their bills rather than because its their passion. Working in a laberous boring job 40 hours a week can contribute to brain drain too. If AI allowed everyone to work 10 less hours a week then people could lead healthier and happier lifestyles. More time to play handball with friends and stay fit and active or to raise children and watch them grow. Companies which utilise automation or AI do so because its cheaper than paying for labour. If a robot can do surgery with precision and better results then surely that's cheaper than the amount of time to train doctors. In terms of benefits, here's one example of where AI/super computers has done something which would take humans years - www.bbc.com/news/technology-67912033With data modelling techniques maybe the same could be used for finding cures to illnesses too. It has potential to improve our lives but only if its in the right hands as in the wrong hands it could also cause devastation.

It has potential to improve our lives but only if its in the right hands as in the wrong hands it could also cause devastation. Interesting example the N2116 material in that link. As it happens, already 25-30 years ago I was thinking about batteries and asked myself and others, why isn't there another material, something that would make the batteries last almost forever? There should be. And now you presented it. I agree, most people wouldn't even work at all if they didn't have to. Problem is, noone will ever pay anybody for doing nothing, it won't happen. So 25% less working hours simply means 25% less pay. Unless citizen wages (in Swedish "medborgarlön") were implemented. It means people have a basic income no matter what they do. There are variations of this model of course, but most of them include a basic income. I saw an interesting program on TV a couple of months ago about AI and it was depressing since most money was spent on developing weapons to destroy the human race (and everything else of course) with the help of AI. Is the movie The Creator any good? About AI, I've thought about seeing it.
