In slow decline since the 2000s but starting getting really shit once Dawson and Tufnell joined. Imo.

It's been in decline since Dawson and certainly Tufnell joined, but IMO it really hit rock bottom when McGuinness took over. I saw it a couple of times and it was utterly abysmal. Haven't watched it since. Interesting that it used to get 5 million viewers with Barker and Co. but it's down to around 1 million now. If it ain't broken don't fix it.

Used to watch it every week when it was David Coleman and the panelist’s were Beaumont, Edwards, Hughes and Carson then they changed it to too much. Didn’t mind Sue Barker but McGuiness was a step too far. Like with a number of programmes when you try and change something too much they often fail add to that Sky and it was destined to happen eventually. I’m sure it’ll be the first of many. On the subject of change it’ll be interesting to see if the new Dr can take the ratings back up after they dipped with the first female doctor. The signs are promising.

Like many older posters i have enjoyed the show for ages. In the 70/80s there were very few sport programmes on tv as entertainment. The format started to change to match sky shows with silly games and non entities on the panel.
The captains and their personalities and rivalries help make it plus purely based sport questions. I have watched a few of the modern versions but the format is to attract a different audience as they do not bother about the core audience and format which made it a success. Sam Quek though as a captain has great sports knowledge and would have been a great captain in any era.

Watching the whole half-hour show as a kid pretty much only for “what happened next”. Bit like watching krypton factor just for the obstacle course.
Feels like a different world 🥲

Declined due to "lazy management" - where have I heard that before?
The programme used to be kept fresh with changes in the chairperson and team captains, but then got into a long rut and viewers got bored.
When the BBC realised it was dying, they made a wholesale change that has lost the few long time loyal viewers and failed to attract new ones.
I imagine it will be resurrected in due course by a future generation, when they can find some popular retired respected sports person to take the lead roles.

I remember liking it for a couple of years around when Sue Barker started and probably up until about 2000 or so.
A lot of these shows just have their day eventually. There’s only so much you can do with that kind of format in an era where there are so many tv options.

As soon as they moved away from sport and tried to make it a cross between they think it’s all over and a league of their own it was doomed
