Different field but lad I know told me not to renew my mortgage on a fixed term deal as they were ripping the piss so go variable as the rate would come down the end of this year.
Obviously ignored him as my arse twitched but only committed to 2 years instead of 5 so hopefully doesn't go pear shaped again by then.

Rather depends on what they're offering to fix it at.

Are offering me fixed tariff for 18 months...yes or no Have a look at what other providers are offering. If there are lots of broadly comparable fixed rate offers that tends to suggest they're quite keen for you to fix, perhaps because they think rates are going to drop. When fixed rate offers collectively disappear the opposite is often true. I got offered to fix by Ovo Energy and declined. And the variable rate is now cheaper. Good luck.

Hopefully that practice has gone out of the window. Betting against the market is what caused so many to go bust. If they're offering fixed (and not many are) they should be backing it off by fixing volume so they can guarantee the price. Typically winter has always been the wrong time to fix because market sentiment is generally pessimistic - whereas in summer it is generally more optimistic. Though most of that has probably gone to ratshit over the last 2 years.

Just looked at mine for the first time in a while and I'm £100 in credit but they're estimating by 31st March I'll be £250 in debit so are looking to lump mine up by 35% - fuck right off!

I’m on the Octopus tracker & currently for the past week it’s been 33% cheaper than the variable tariff for electricity & 34% cheaper for gas.
Saved me a fortune over the past 12 months.
If anyone is interested, message me as if I refer you, then we both get £50 bill credit.
