It’d be lovely to have some foreign options who are going to come in and save us from ourselves but that’s not going to happen. Why not? Both QPR and Sheff Wed have made left field foreign appointments and immediately seen an uplift in results. And they are both objectively speaking in more shit than we are. Their only uplift is the fact that they both played us? 😂

Their only uplift is the fact that they both played us? 😂 Not true though is it. QPR have won three on the spin and had four clean sheets in five. Wednesday have taken seven points from their last three games, including a very good draw against Leicester, having only taken six points from their first sixteen.

If they appoint Smith and he turns out worse than AN,they really should sell the club, new owners may not have has much money, but hopefully they will have the know how,on how to run a football club.

Maybe I’m putting too much faith in our underperforming board, but I really don’t think we’re going to appoint Smith or anyone in his mould. I expect us to at least try and be progressive, regardless of whether it actually pays off or not.

Did well at Brentford before leaving for Villa. Bees fans weren’t happy when he left as was doing a good job.
I really don’t know who I’d want but would give my support to Smith if he’s the man we choose. He’s probably one of the better “British” managers we’ve been linked with.
Not sure I could stomach a left-field appointment like Mad Nath as I bought into the hype at the time.

I felt he was unfairly sacked at Villa, but looking at the money he spent there I’m not so sure. Since then he’s failed at Norwich and Leicester with relegations at both.
So he can’t spend money and gets relegated a lot. Welcome aboard, Dean.

As Villa manager he aciutlly said playing us is Stokes cup final for that alone he can foxtrot oscar. never mod the fact he was diabolical at Norwich and Leicester. There are at least 50 better than Dean Smith Most people in football have made derogatory comments about us and not without merit. Many of our fans revelled in being a footballing pariah.

I know that we are Stoke City & we have billionaire owners but in the position we currently find ourselves in in the field, we are not going to be able to go out and get any manager we want.
For me Dean Smith is an upgrade on the last 2 managers which is 1 box ticked.
Hes done a great job at Walsall, Brentford and Villa.
He only had the last 8 games as manager at a team that was too far gone to save from relegation.
The only blip on his cv is Norwich.
I would give him a contract until the end of the season with a view to a automatic extension if certain targets are met.

I would give him a contract until the end of the season with a view to a automatic extension if certain targets are met. Norwich were 5th when he sacked for the record too, and finished 13th. Which is not to say that A: I want him, or B: they would have gone up with him, just that Norwich continued to fall away from a good position he had established following his sacking. In a managerial shortlist of light beige vs dark beige I wouldn't be "unhappy" with him being appointed. He also has experience working in a system where he is not the only voice on recruitment, which may save us from having to tear it all down again. But I wouldn't be expecting massive changes, I don't think that's possible whilst John still involves himself on the football side. I think whoever we realistically appoint, it will be underwhelming. But as you say, you can't finish 16th, 15th, 14th, 14th and 16th and not expect repercussions from that level of mediocrity.

Would anyone have been able to stop that slide? They had had a fantastic team but with barely more than the small squad that won them the league. From there it could only go downwards, with so many players moving on or dropping out. Once they let their captain and keeper go there was no stopping the downfall. Would he have done what Maresca has done in the Championship thus far, including results and football style? That's the rub here. That's why we're so far behind, reaching for dead heads like Rowett, Neil and Smith et al. while other clubs go for progressive appointments that bridge gaps. Would Maresca have saved them if he had arrived midway last season? No one knows, but by starting with a clean slate in August he's in a better place than whoever comes in at Stoke.

This is the same Dean Smith that leathered 22M on Wesley... Sounds like the exact sort of manager we should be going for. Anyone who spunks 22m on Wesley could surely be trusted with a January and Summer budget for a 20th place champo team.

Dont get me wrong like the next person I fancy an exciting appointment. I think the idea of an older statesman exasperates is all! But give your heads a wobble! Dean Smith did a brilliant job at both Brentford and Villa! Didn’t do bad at Norwich. And had no chance at Leicester! Brendan Rogers couldn’t get a tube out of them last season and we’d all take him in a heartbeat!
He may not be a glamorous appointment but if he comes in I think he’ll do well!

This is the same Dean Smith that leathered 22M on Wesley... Actually that was a 'club' signing, that's how Villa operate He will have 'signed off' on it speak to Brentford & Villa fans about Dean Smith, then speak to Norwich & Leicester fans about Dean Smith Like it's two completely different managers If we get the Brentford/Villa version then he's the exact opposite of the 'same-old-dour0-tactcis-shit-football' that everyone is desperate to avoid if we get the Norwich/Leicester one then he's exactly that imo there's loads worse being linked with the hob but really would hope for much better

Smith is in New York, or was on saturday. Hes pictured watching the Villa Arsenal game. So unless weve approached him before doubt anything imminent is happening
