www.theguardian.com/football/2024/jan/19/jeff-stelling-sky-sports-soccer-saturday-chris-kamara-footballThis is an interesting article from someone who was one of the main & respected presenters of live Football duties, Mr Jeff Stelling. Here he describes how the diversity changes and implementations being made at Sky for the sake of nothing more than diversity.. were making him ill! Great to hear that That Talksport have given him the opportunity to escape the diversity hamster wheel & give him the platform where he feels comfortable to do what only Jeff can do. Talksport is absolute drivel though.

Talksport is absolute drivel though. Disagree personally but each to their own. Certain aspects/shows are drivel granted but do find Talksport on my car radio more than it isn't. Even if pottering around the house I'll have TS live on YouTube in the background. The breakfast shows are always good, Laura Woods was ace & Jeff now is a different but a more than suitable replacement. McCoist is always a good listen & one of my favourite sports broadcasters.. The Goldstein & Bent 4-7pm show is always informative & amusing and I do like Simon Jordan so the 10-1pm show is always worth a listen to as well. Don't always agree 100% with Simons views but do in the main and he puts his arguments across in a constructive & forthright way which these days is quite a rare commodity.. Get TS isn't for everyone but at least it's given Jeff Stelling a platform where he feels he can be himself again. Sky Sports New channel which I did used to watch & like, has gone so down hill I tend to Swerve it these days. As recent clipped footage has shown, & Stelling alludes to, its all gone abit diverse obsessed these days, to the massive detriment to the channel.

For Jeff Stelling’s argument to stand up he has to argue that Phil Thompson, Matt Le Tissier and Charlie Nicholas are the best in the world at whatever it was they did. Love Jeff and I like that he’s standing up for his friends. Do I believe this is a blind diversity push from Sky? No. I think the case is more compelling for Martin Tyler. Put another way, why isn’t Charlie Nicholas being used by all the other broadcasters now he’s available? Good on TalkSport for allowing the conversation but I’m still to be convinced.

Sky sports news seems to have so many 20 something no marks on giving their bullshit opinions. Where do they get these people from. I'm guessing they are bloggers or podcast people with a few hundred followers. Either way they are all a bit rubbish. Only watch rarely now or simply just to laugh at the tools.

It was the amalgamation of all of them that made it work. I don’t know but I bet viewing figures are down considerably since their diversification if that’s what we’re calling it. You’ve got to wonder why.

This thing about the good old days at Sky is a head scratcher for me. I haven’t watched Sky Sports for years but one reason I stopped was the frustration of watching the same 4 or 5 middle aged semi-literate blokes inanely rambling for hours spouting out cliche after cliche and playing off the old pals, ex pro bandwagon. I believe Merton is still actually employed which is incredible to me. Now I don’t know if it could get any worse but I’ll just have to take peoples word for it. But it was a very low bar. If people think that is entertainment and even prepared to pay for it, best of luck. It was utter drivel imho. Each to their own I guess!

You’ve got to wonder why. Which I hear but it is a bit 'Jobs for the boys'. I can only do good work if I'm working with my friends even if they're not the best at their job. I'm specifically not calling it a diversification, I'm saying that they've tried to freshen things up because it was a bit old and tired and the people they happen to have employed are from different backgrounds which I'm guessing they hope will provide more insight to the audience. People that have played more recently, people that have more experience of an internationally diverse dressing room, the impact of social media rather than knowing what it was like going to the pub after training in the early 90s.

I may have been unlucky but everytime I listened it was a call in show where they had a current topic and one of the hosts took an extremists position which was there only to get audience members to call in and argue with people. I'm personally not surprised to see TalkSport being discussed on the Joey Barton thread.

Jesus fucking Christ 😳 I can forgive her though, she is pretty fit Sky Sports News is just a complete hot mess and the transfer shows are so cringeworthy. Kaveh and Dahmesh are just ridiculous - 'my sources close to the club' just means 'we've had a look on their fan message boards and are spreading their bollocks' I think Barton has a point on meritocracy as Sky has gone backwards - Natalie Sawyer for example nobody could say she knew fuck all about football as it was pretty obvious she grew up embedded in it and Googling it she went Brentford from about 6. It's evident in how she talks about it that she's been in amongst it from childhood. The majority of the presenters now I'd be amazed if they'd follow their team on a cold Tuesday night to Stoke unless they were in corporate all you could guzzle.

Yeah I think regardless of cock or vadge - black or white it should be a meritocracy but Sky Sports tick boxing has defo had a negative impact for me. There's got to be a middle ground between the old Saturday show where it was just a collection of middle aged pissheads to whatever the fuck the current mix is about.

Sky Sports "break stories" minutes after Fabrizio Romano and Orstein, they're the "sources" they have, it's quite embarrassing really.

That’s just a normal mistake though isn’t it? There’s tens of pages of ridiculous things Michael Owen has said online. Chris Kamara on a professional standard was very low albeit very funny. Paul Merson called Bacary Sagna, Sacary Bagna at one point. I understand some arguments but then picking stuff up like this is a bit strange whereas when one of the blokes does it and it’s funny.

Exactly, most of male ex-pro footballer types have made careers out of saying this kind of stuff week in and week out, and everyone seems to thinks that's 'brilliant' and they all have a good chuckle about it and pat each other on the back, and it hasn't seemed to impact their ability to get media employment for decades either.

For it to be a blind diversity push you have to say that the existing lot where the best in the world and no one else is better. They weren’t. They have been replaced by younger people who in general are more diverse. Some of those are apparently rubbish and if they don’t improve they should and probably will get the boot. The fact some of those kept their job for so long is the issue.
