Bent over yesterday and a severe pain in my lower back (never suffered with back pain before) Felt like a stabbing sensation, and very painful Managed to drive home (which was uncomfortable) and been on the sofa since. Getting up is extremely painful (same sort of pain as when you get metal wrapper on a filling) Anyway, I’ve managed to get in to see a sports therapist on Friday but just wondering what it is (we’ve got a bupa help line through our life ins, and the guy said it sounds like sciatica and can last 6 weeks😱) Anyone got experiences of it? how long it takes to heal etc.. things that can help (I’m in agony here!) Just putting ice on it and having ibruprofen but not particularly relieving the pain. Couldn’t really sleep it was too painful. Is there any point ringing the doctors? Can never get in and I don’t think I’d be able to get there tbh Any help would be appreciated👍🏻

Members of my family and a couple of family friends have had various back or knee pain issues. Unanimously they said taking glucosamine tablets helped. My father in law particularly was helped. He went from struggling to walk more than a few paces to being able to go on 10k walks again, and he puts it down to the glucosamine more than anything else. I had a problem that I thought was sciatica. Went to the doctor who said it was "mechanical back pain". Gave me some stretching exercises, but basically said give it time to heal. It didn't. So went to an osteopath privately. He said he could see what was wrong with my spine and did some massage on it. Little change the first 2 times I went. The third time I went, having already loosened me up with previous visits, he set to work poking me, pressing me, bending me, etc. When he had finished I was in agony, didn't think I could walk to his door to leave. I managed to get back to me car, but was worried I would not be able to get out when I got home. During the rest of the day I just sat and rested and the pain gradually eased off. Woke up the next morning free of pain and not had a problem since - that's 10 years ago.

I had a problem with my shoulder a few years back, someone suggested trying a tens machine.
Didn't notice any immediate change but certainly got rid of it. Still use it now and then when any ache's crop up.

In the first instance the doctor is unlikely to do much other than give you stronger painkillers than you can buy over the counter and a sick note if you need one and tell you to come back if it doesn't improve. Rest and heat/cold, no lifting or sudden movements and see if it improves over a week - if it's simply muscular then it will. If it doesn't, or gets worse, and you have BUPA then consider a scan as it's difficult to prescribe accurate treatment without an accurate diagnosis. If it is sciatica or a slipped disc you have my sympathy as I know from experience it's bloody painful and is a six month recovery. Also consider physio, doesn't necessarily help in the short term but a good physio will give you exercises to help prevent re-occurance. Hope it's nothing serious and you're fine for Christmas.

I'd get upper back pain rather than lower back. What works for me is sleeping flat on my back with a pillow below my knees and another below my head/neck.
I find a few nights sleeping like this usually gets me 80% better.
Ice/cold compress is good for first couple of days to reduce swelling but after that a hot compress can sometimes help more.
Worth googling exercises and stretches to help loosen up too. As mines upper back mine won't be much use to you.

Hoping this guy Friday will have an idea of what I’ve done tbh coke. Like I say I’ve never suffered with back pain, and only bent over to pick something up. I’m a good 8/10 on the pain wise though, and dreading it lasting over xmas. Wife’s gone out to get some info from the chemists. Just wondered if it is sciatica how long before you start feeling a bit better and when you should start moving.. no way I could move about and stretch at present though. Even coughing is agony🤦🏻♂️

Although the porn work subsequently dried up soon after carrying around a more modest 9 incher is so much easier and doesn't get in the way at all playing golf like before - twenty foot putt and I'd pass out from the inevitable resultant rapid erection.

Loads of things it could be but, a very good idea would be to youtube diaphragmatic breathing ....surprisingly good for many upper body probs like this
None harmful and free
Go to a good physio (prob not nhs) and don't expect much help from a gp

I had trouble on and off for years until finally bit the bullet and went for penis reduction surgery. Although the porn work subsequently dried up soon after carrying around a more modest 9 incher is so much easier and doesn't get in the way at all playing golf like before - twenty foot putt and I'd pass out from the inevitable resultant rapid erection. I've been in pain with my lower back since Saturday, did it lifting the pram up some steps on my own. Stupidly mustn't have bent my knees enough and now I'm walking round hunched over or like I've shat my pants.
Hurts most in the mornings when I get out of bed or if I've sat for a long spell at my desk at work. The best it's felt was when i walked home from work last night.

I have always given a shit about the pain, never used any pain killers not even a mild headache pill, the real problem is when the functions disappear - that is always the worst part. Can you still feel your legs, your feet, your toes? Can you control your pooping and peeing or are you shitting yourself? If so you should see a doctor immediately. It could lead to life threatening bacteria infections. These problems are easily seen on a MRI. It might be difficult to get one done? They are always available within the private sector though. The absolute worst thing you could do is to rest and lie down on a sofa!!! You should walk around and move as much as possible. If you are very pain sensitive a mild pain killer might help you with the movement. The best thing though is to try without them, so you have control of what you do and don't do any bad movements for your back. The normal procedure when seeing a doctor is to get an appointment to a physio therapist. Last time for the lower back I saw one for two years and thereby avoided the surgery. Now I'm having rehab for herniated disc/s in the neck. It helps. It has only been 3 months so it's very early days though. Within surgery they normally use a nail to connect the damaged disc with the next. In the USA they can replace a damaged disc with a new one. But anyone within this field says, to avoid surgery is always the number one solution. Instead controlled light weight physio therapy is what's recommended. You should see results within a couple of years. However, the acute pain can get away a lot faster. The outcome differs enormously on an individual level. Noone can say exactly when and how in advance. Surgery is a seldom used methods. If it's a herniated disc, it sounds so, 85-90 % will heal with physio therapy or a conservative method (means doing nothing special). The stats from surgery says approx 40-50% get much better or totally back to normal, 40% somewhat better, and it doesn't help at all or being worse for 10-20% of the patients. Takes me a good 20 mins to make the toilet and it’s agony moving. Never broke a bone so hard to compare pain, I have snapped my acl and Achilles though and it’s far worse than both of them🤦🏻♂️ Just defrosting my dinner on my back atm😂 dosed up with paramol. It wouldn’t be so bad if I knew what it was, how long I’m going to be like this for, and what i should be doing (suppose il find out no more friday)

Not feeling it in my legs and the guy I spoke to asked about pooping etc (I’m all good on that front) I really need to have a bath I stink🤦🏻♂️ but just scared of not being able get up the stairs and in the bath. It’s hard work getting up off the sofa but tbf once I’m up, i can walk, albeit very slowly and it’s very painful. The physio I’m booked into see has been excellent in the past (I have had problems lifting my right shoulder in the past) I guess it’s just getting old. I’d never really looked into what sciatica was and just assumed a bit of deep heat il be back to normal in the morning.. (not happened so far)

I suffered for ages with "back" pain and ended up going to a physio who did the old spine "crack" thing and it was miraculous and sorted me instantly, I was sceptical of a physio at first but fuck me I've never been better and wished I'd been months earlier.

Thanks for that oggy il get some ordered, worth a try👍🏻 Glucosamine may help in the long term and are a great addition as I have also noticed a massive difference since taking them, short term the advise is get to the docs and get Naproxen, but keep moving, gone are the days where the advice is bed rest!

Even coughing is agony🤦🏻♂️ If its happened by a bending movement it's more likely to be an injury and not sciatica, if it is sciatica, good luck! Not a lot seems to take away the initial few weeks, even Naproxen struggles with that!

Had sciatica about 10 years ago as a result of holding a sneeze in! The pain was horrendous. Doctor recommended I sleep curled up in a ball keeping my knees as close to my chest as possible. I thought there’s no way I can sleep like that but I slept like a baby and in just over a week the pain had pretty much gone. I do get the odd sudden pain now and again but it never lasts long, goes from the back of the knee, into the arse cheek and half way up the back.

I'm old skool, I think it is worth starting with your GP.
They should, on theory at least, take a wider view of what the problem may be.
Not all back pain is muscular for example.

Its important to get a diagnosis - if you can trace the pain to a particular incident it's likely to be a muscle problem, trapped nerve/sciatica, issue with you back that physio and exercise can sort out. However back pain can also be caused by illnesses that are nothing to do with muscle/skeletal problems so if the physio can't pinpoint the problem see your GP.
Not wishing to worry you but sciatica can be a long term problem and hard to shift. My partner had it for over 30 years - as he cured it by accidentally falling down some concrete steps and knocking her spine back into place (not recommended).
I had lower back pain and what sorted me out was a chiropractor - 3 sessions and I was fine.
As others have said exercise can be the key.

If I were you I'd book to see a chiropractor pronto. They will release the spasm and realign your back. Unfortunately, once you're prone to this kind of thing it's likely to recur, unless you revisit the chiro every few months as a preventative measure and do cat/cow stretches every day. Good luck.

Having had the misfortune of a triple vertebrae break when I was 20, compounded by a spinal compression my best advise is to understand what your 'mischief' is before jumping to resolutions.
Is it mechanical, muscular or nerves, and from there seek the best course of corrective or preventative action you can find.
Also worth remembering that whilst you've felt pain in your back that may not be the origin so do your best to get seen to ASAP.

From someone who's done his back a few times bending and lifting, my money's on a bulging disc. Can't sit can't stand can't lie down pure agony for 4 or 5 days then it starts easing off. Depending which nerve the disc presses on is relative to where you feel the pain. Apparently, the older you get the less elastic all them stringy bits get what keep everything in place.

I’ve had arthritis now for many years and had both hips replaced. It’s now affecting my left shoulder so I self referred to the physio at our health centre. He gave me some stretching exercises but also he recommended that I research and take up Ping Shuai Gong which is a very simple Chinese arm swinging exercise. Been doing this every morning for about 15 minutes for last 8 months and my shoulder is back to normal just a bit squeaky. But I’ve also found that my whole posture has massively improved, no longer get lower back ache and the knee bending part of the routine has increased the flexibility around both hips so much so that I’m now back throwing myself around the badminton court every Wednesday night. tekson.org/ping-shuai-gong-english-explanation/
