Rest in peace El Tel. Very sad news when I heard about his passing. Will always remember the atmosphere his England team created in the summer of 96 and that will always stay with me.

Always just seemed a normal, decent bloke who was obviously also a very good player and manager. The arm around Southgate’s shoulder after his penalty miss in 96 is quite an iconic moment.
RIP Terry.

My first memories of an England team were when he was in charge. The Gazza goal, hammering Holland, Spain on penalties, was a shame he didn’t carry on instead of Hoddle. One of very few England managers I remember fondly. I was at all 3 of those games, the 4 1 win against the Dutch ( a team that included Peter Hoestra ) was one of the best nights of my life. RIP El Tel, a truly great character and coach 😥😢😥

I was saddened to hear of the death of El Tel.
He always came across as a decent bloke aswell as being a coach of great ability.
My earliest memories of watching England play were the World Cup finals of 1970 and from that time to now the period when Venables was in charge were the most enjoyable.

That season when we were going for promotion
3 from 4, Durban, Venables , Mullery (came over as a complete tosser) and forget who the Sunderland manager was
Got feisty between the managers a few times but Venables was the level headed one
Think they had the advantage of playing after everyone else, v Burnley the following Thursday for some reason I think and some ridiculous Palace crowd turned up. Was 40 k plus

It makes you wonder where time goes when Glen Hoddle is the earliest england manager still alive. France 98 does not seem like 25 years ago

All ifs and bits ofcourse but the players certainly loved playing for him and he got the spirit and backing of the country back into the national team.

Croatia for me looked like winners at one stage but that dreadful semi v the Czechs at OT, I left early was so bad 2 from 3, Germany)England)Croatia would have been a good final . Germany had a GG disallowed v England also, England got some massive calls but could have won it Certainly doesn't put him second on the list though for me.

No Southgate is after Ramsey Venables is the what if because he was sacked way too soon Better than Hoddle imho Strongly suspect he would have done more with Svens squad too Can't see any English coaches around now on a par with him

There was a feel good feeling that year more so because the euros were held in England not because how good the team was. Rose tinted glasses mate
