I've always been able to function happily on my own mate, and I actually found polish quite easy to pick up the basics when I was in Krakow. It took me about 3 years to feel comfortable with the language in Germany, despite having school german and needing it for work (as well as english and french). On the other hand it's very hard NOT to learn a language when you're immersed in the society in which it's spoken. Mate of mine moved to Switzerland as he got a job there. All his colleagues talked in English to him during the working day, as its the language of commerce, but at clocking off they refused to continue and switched to Swiss German. He quickly enrolled in Swiss German lessons so he'd have some semblance of a social life out of work; whereupon he met some other expats at the lessons and they ditched the classroom even more quickly in favour of playing 5 a side and hitting the bars instead. Ironically he then met a German lass and after a few years he asked her father for permission to propose; the dad said I'll accept, but only if you actually learn the language. Years later he's finally fluent(ish) but his kids are native speakers and switch to and from Swiss and/or High German when they want to talk about something in private as they know he can't keep up!

Being as we have come next May two granddaughters both abroad we are now actively looking at moving to one of them. Either Germany or Australia to try and save some of the travel costs, so live near one and only pay to visit one as opposed to paying to visit both. It's a tough decision but needs must not sure where yet though. I take it they both didn't leave because they couldn't stand you lol? and that is a tough one, I would lean towards Germany as the weather isn't too dissimilar to ours, the spiders are a lot smaller, and you don't have to put up with the accent Just don't mention zee var! I've not visited Australia, but I have been to Germany and apart from the graffiti on the Autobahns (much like Poland, it was quite artistic, not your usual cock and balls you get here in the UK) and I was VERY impressed. Everything works, everything is clean and a lot of German people are very friendly. Which one is your favourite child?

We love Germany its been our second home for the last 6years and our youngest is now expecting his first child our second grandchild so it makes sense to move there and stay with him as he's just moved into a larger place just outside Frankfurt. He's doing us our own space at his just in case we do move but for us to visit anyway. Our eldest is leaving Brisbane QLD which we visited this year and heading to NSW near to Byron Bay to be nearby his missus family but he doesn't have room for us at the moment and it doesn't look likely as it's so expensive. So it's possible we'll move to Frankfurt and stick to visiting Australia as it is at the moment not bad choices to have π

A little bit of a turnaround for me.
This Saturday, I leave for Spain for 3 weeks. I then need to be back in the UK for a 2 or 3 days and then I'm flying out to Orlando until at least the end of January

Anyone done it? Thinking about it? I've seen a few places in Bulgaria and Portugal that are cheaper than a brand new car and really thinking long and hard about it. I'm nearly 40 and nowhere near a deposit for a house in the UK let alone buying outright. On top of that rent is getting rediculous in this country, I know about the visa requirements etc and honestly thinking about buying abroad and spending as much time over there rather than holidays etc until the old pension kicks in etc Hi, shit fan here, I am in Australia, currently in Sydney. If you move then you would be giving up a lot, the things I miss most are the things that pissed me off. Shit football and shit food and nothing to do but to go to the pub every weekend. Moving to europe would be great as you can fly back in a few hours. You have until 45 years to move to Aus. Great outdoor lifestyle, but a million miles from home. Been away for ten years and want to move back. Something that is different about moving abroad is that the further away from Stoke you are the more friendly Vale and Stoke fans become.....in my experience anyway. Good luck with whatever decision you make.
