Dare I mention BEXIT? Since our departure from the EU moving permanently to member states is no longer as straight forward as it used to be. You've got the 90-day rule for EU countries. I'm not sure whether that was ever any different, pre-Brexit though. I've started looking at options, fancy Cyprus maybe, but it would need to be a permanent/residency scenario, I think. Plenty of retired ex-pat Brits in Cyprus, quite a few working as well, but mainly self employed and employed wages are poor. The rules post Brexit are somewhat different though ... but they do have a health service of some kind.

Anyone done it? Thinking about it? I've seen a few places in Bulgaria and Portugal that are cheaper than a brand new car and really thinking long and hard about it. I'm nearly 40 and nowhere near a deposit for a house in the UK let alone buying outright. On top of that rent is getting rediculous in this country, I know about the visa requirements etc and honestly thinking about buying abroad and spending as much time over there rather than holidays etc until the old pension kicks in etc I moved to LA which is silly if cheap houses are what you're looking for... Lots of pros and I'm happy overall but I still wish I could go home sometimes. You never know for sure how you'll feel until you've done it.

just don't be an annoying "British expat" moaning about everything not being as good as England (so why did you leave?) .. Florida was full of them when I lived there..

I was like that for the first 3 months I lived in the US. The reality is that no matter where you go, there are positives and negatives. It’s all about finding a place where the negatives are ones that personally don’t drag you down too much.

There is the option of becoming a pirate and living on the high seas in international waters! No need for visa's and those Starlink satellite broadband thingies are coming down in price all the time...

Just don't do it in British seas or you might end up in Rwanda 🤣 There's an idea for Billy. Go out in a dinghy and join a group of illegals and pretend to be a foreigner. Then he can get a free one way ticket to Rwanda.

The reading up I've done so far, Bulgaria has 90 days on a rolling 180 days so 3 out of 6 months. It's not part of the Schengen area so I could still travel to say Spain,Poland or Portugal etc without issue. I'm not in a position to retire sadly but the more I think about it the more the 90/180 I could make that work. Living half the year in Bulgaria, whilst retaining UK wages of sorts.

After getting back that was my first thought! However as nice as Poland is it's far from cheap and there are complex issues around getting a visa.

I've thought about doing it temporarily but haven't got much further. I know a few people who've moved, one from Scotland to Bulgaria (and she loves it there), and another two guys I used to work with who've moved their families to Portugal. Definitely much more bang for your buck house-wise. It's awesome to see you're considering this following your thread about travelling alone abroad! There is so much more to update that thread with but it's been hard work to get it all in to a readable state

Sounds a good idea to try a bit of time first. If you're someone who needs close mates around then some places will be very tough and isolating. Especially since Bulgarian or Polish sound bloody hard to learn.

An informative Country by Country analysis of Pros and Cons of each would be valuable and informative In R&D which is essentially what you are doing it's as much about the steps you took and rejected and not the conclusion which are of equal importance. The reasons for your rejection may not apply to others In any case Good Luck

Just spent a couple of weeks in Italy (mostly for work) where I almost took a job. I can't keep up with slang and jokes in big groups so I know it would have been hard for me. Sounds like you know yourelf pretty well though, I'll check back in 6 months to read what life in Bulgaria or whatever is like 😁

I've only ever been to sunny beach but did a few day trips into some of the cities and everyone was always very pleasant too. I always remember seeing the local residents out every morning sweeping the streets in front of the homes and just taking pride in where they live.

I have a hazy plan in my head where I get the best of both worlds but I really do need to sort the figures out and visit the area I am looking at. Maybe time to start a YouTube channel Billy big adventures haha.

Most of the Bulgarians I met in the UK had those typical "Slavic" rules for politeness, not much smiling and different sense of humour etc. Even more than my Polish mates. Was it different there? Maybe they're just happier at the beach or you're a more charming conversationalist than me. (the ones I know are lovely folk too btw. Just took a while to feel closer to them)

It took me about 3 years to feel comfortable with the language in Germany, despite having school german and needing it for work (as well as english and french). On the other hand it's very hard NOT to learn a language when you're immersed in the society in which it's spoken.

Half a chance I'd be in Australia Moving abroad for a chance of a better quality of life fella? Dead right, 80'000 immigrants last year, Australia had 5'000. The Aussies are basically English, their anncestors were English. They've got their priorities in order.

Talk show "talk t.v" poll on YouTube asking this today " with net migration reaching 700'000 this week, are Britain's services at breaking point?" YES 94% NO 6%

Being as we have come next May two granddaughters both abroad we are now actively looking at moving to one of them. Either Germany or Australia to try and save some of the travel costs, so live near one and only pay to visit one as opposed to paying to visit both. It's a tough decision but needs must not sure where yet though.

YES 94% NO 6% Pity we've been losing out on EU immigration since European migrants generally pay in more than they take out. I'm glad that the UK could attract hundreds of thousands of more immigrant students though. Universities wouldn't survive without their high fees.
