Come off it. This squad is only 3-4 months old, we are only going to get better We played well against Leeds but poorly against Cardiff and Sunderland. Boro sounded good and Coventry sounded shit. I think a bit too much is being made of this tbh. However not losing in 5 is excellent. Winning 3 is excellent. But we’ve been here before with Neil and it meant nothing so let’s see if he can actually sustain it. And get us playing better. if we won 3 in a row then lost 0-1 against Cardiff and lost against Coventry, then I’d say we had been here before. But in my opinion they are good points. Cardiff were in the play offs and hard to break down, and Coventry had to throw everything at us to get them a much needed 3 points, yet we kept them out

Could also put it down to a tough start to the season and injuries for me. Against the lesser sides we have scored enough, but no so much against the better sides generally, however, before the last couple of 0-0 games, we beat Sunderland, Leeds and Boro. Our recent form is good and goals will hopefully come when injuries finally piss off. Haksabanovic and Campbell to come back to add to Mmaee and then Bae getting more game time. We’ll have a decent season. Stop talking sense and positively some folks don’t like that😊.

Interesting question, my opinion the management expected alot more from the large amount of midfield players they have brought in,I think they expected and probably we all thought that BURGER would be the key player scoring around the 10 mark unfortunately another box standard player who can't really make a impact in this league Why would they expect Burger to score goals when he's basically a defensive midfielder? They may well expect more from him in terms of progressive passing. He has a good range of passing but up to now it's been very hit and miss and overall he's been a bit disappointing. The midfield balance is still all wrong and I don't think it's as simple as replacing Johnson with Jun-ho either. I really don't know what the answer is. Maybe it's as simple as a more modern manager with a more attacking mindset but that isn't going to happen any time soon. We seem to have plenty of talented attacking players but still without a centre forward who fits the system we are trying to play. Mmaee is a good footballer but he's not the type we need. Gayle is shot. Wesley is just not mobile enough and Lowe in all truth is not ready. Tezgel is the one we don't really know about yet but from the bits I've seen I don't think high energy pressing is his game. Asante would have been ideal in our setup I think. Maybe another go for him in January? or someone similar is essential.

They could be good points but I just didn’t enjoy the Cardiff game so that overrides it for me. I saw a team we should beat and that we kept just going long to despite them having a giant who won everything at the back. It was just poor. We had the blip of good results last year. This isn’t close to that standard football wise but the results are. Can he carry it on this time?

i think we would need a good run to even think about play offs the teams are pulling away now at the top, 5 games unbeaton a month ago we would have bitten your hand off for that but the last 2 draws have cost us big time i think

Having a proper striker who can hold off a defender and turn him will make a huge difference. Mmaee does it but can't last long and hasn't played much.
Gayle can't do it at all now.
Wesley can hold it up sometimes but can't do anything else, useful from the bench in a home game though.
We should have gone in properly for a proven striker in the summer. We'd be 4-5 points better off if we had

So far we've only scored 16 goals in 16 games- and 4 of them were in one game against Rotherham. We've conceded 18, which is actually the 6th or 7th best in the league. Thankfully, our defence, after a rather porous start, has tightened up considerably as the players have got used to each other. A big part of that is Stevens coming back and a CB pairing getting a run of games together. I'm still not convinced by Hoever's defending on the right, but considering how toothless our attack looks, picking him is probably the right call on balance. The worry is the front 4. Vidigal on the left is literally the only goal threat we have. He started the season well, but teams know all about him now- he likes to cut in onto his right and also drifts into the centre to finish off crosses from the right. Opposing teams are all going to be aware of that now. He's not really looked like scoring since he came back from injury. Leris on the right lacks quality on the ball. He'll run all day and is good in the air, but he's not creative enough. He's a poor man's Jacob Brown, which is not exactly a ringing endorsement. Johnson is another runner, but isn't going to put a through-ball on a plate for a striker, and doesn't seem to be much of a goal threat himself either. I've covered the strikers in another thread. I'm not convinced any of them are the answer. This isn't just a reaction to two 0-0 draws on the bounce, looking at the team as it stands, I don't know where a goal is coming from. It's wonderful that the backline has tightened up, but it's still got mistakes in it. Five games unbeaten is a positive, but I can see plenty of 0-1 defeats on the cards with what we're doing at the moment. I think over the years I've always loved everything you write, but to say Leris is a poor man's Jacob Brown is preposterous. How can you say that? Brown couldn't even control a ball. He has physicality and nothing else. Leris is a good player, not creative, but technically very proficient. He's already scored goals and got assists. He's a far better player than brown

I don't see the same player you do with Leris. He's got a couple of goals so far, but his stats in Serie A aren't those of a goalscorer. He got 2 in 67 for Sampdoria. What I see with him is a hardworking player who is pretty average at everything. I think he's a downgrade on the player he replaced, sadly. Not awful, but not good enough for anything other than a team in lower mid-table. Maybe I'll be proved wrong on that, I hope I am, but for me he's nothing more than an OK squad player.

We have exciting attacking players. We need a manager to get the most out of them. I'm not sure about the first statement. I like Vidigal, would like to see more of Haksabanovic and certainly Junho, but I've not seen much to really get excited about across the board. To be fair to Neil, he has switched to 4-2-3-1 in recent games, which the vast majority of us were supportive of. His problem now is that I think he's picking the wrong players in that system.

Neil is fundamentally a very safe manager, I don’t think there’s a huge track record for his teams playing expansive, attractive football. Again this is a man who in his full seasons in charge of clubs has scarcely finished above mid-table. He seems very satisfied with performances and results like yesterday and I think there is a value in that.
Over the past few games we’ve given up types of chances that easily turn “solid, disciplined performances” into turgid, boring defeats.
It’s clear a few tweaks to personnel could make us a bit more attractive to watch and generate a few more chances, from his rhetoric though I think he’s content with the team at the moment.

Leris’ touch is terrible. No it's not Like I said in another thread, Leris plays as though his laces are tied together. Put a ball into his feet & he's all mixed up. Yesterday twice the ball was played to him to take on the turn & he messed it up. No control.

Some managers base their entire strategy on the defence and winning by nicking the odd goal. That was what Pulis did and that is why we had binary results. And to be fair it worked.
I don't think for a minute that is what Neil is trying to do. Yes he's currently concentrating on getting the defensive side right - which is what any sane manager would do - but I don't think that's the be all and end all of what he's setting the team up to do.
I think once the defensive side becomes automatic the attacking side of the game will start to show. Once all parts of the team start to click we will be far from a binary side and if it comes together we will batter some sides when we are on it.

Its hardly a binary season yet. We were leaking goals at the start of the season, and we have sorted that out. We have enough attacking players to score a few goals, just need to find the right combinations. Dropping Gayle and DJ would be a start. Leris probably playing a bit too much as well. We create absolutely nothing in some games so the right combination up front is irrelevant. I think it does, I'm not for one second suggesting dropping him but Vidigal has been poor when it comes to creating chances, he needs to improve quite a bit creativity wise if we're to improve and he stays in the side.
