Spectating is a reflection of modern culture. Fans want action and they are looking for entertainments that at the same time are immediate and instant, and in which they can get involved, like a form of role play.
In the old days it was much different. You went along to the match and stood through it, perhaps waved a scarf around a bit, and probably sang a little. It was all very passive, however much commitment was involved. Mind you if you look at old 1950's Terrace photos featuring rows and rows of identikit fans in cloth caps , I would bet it only would take an incendiary flashpoint, such as someone's cigarette end setting fire to some one elses cap, and all hell would break loose. Caps, mufflers and clogs flying everywhere.

Has something I wrote in this post upset you? 😂 I think you’re the one who is upset mate. I said when they want to be and when they’ve got something to sing about. Have you been to many matches in the past 15 years? Whilst it might have died down we have had a pretty fantastic reputation for atmosphere home and away. Despite our woes on the pitch we are supported away magnificently. So you’re just looking like you want to stick the boot in or stick a flag up you’re arse. A Stoke City ultras section would be absolutely dreadful. It’s not who we are and it’s cringe, southern bollocks. End of. All for an organic singing section and as I said previously, the best away fans don’t need the gimmick. Ok, your posts just confirm that you live in the past and slightly deluded plus your statements are incorrect, you talk of reputation which is also not applicable nowadays. And as for not going I have travelled all over the country and Europe since I started going in 1972 and still do to this day. Nothing else to say.

I think is a term thrown around a bit now. A few fans with a flag brand themselves as Ultras these days.

Banners, standing areas, light shows etc I'm all for but the day Stoke allow some prick to bang a drum for 90 minutes is the day I stop going. I remember there being some bell with a drum at the back of the boothen(The Brit not the Vic)in the late 90s. He soon disappeared though to be fair. Was reet annoying if you'd had 10 pints on the Friday neet. 😆

Almost like the Houses of Parliament in 1605: That looks absolutely shite. Even Arsenal have an 'ultras' section. A bunch of fat muppets in black T-shirts, exactly the same as every other 'ultras' section. I don’t understand the fascination with pyro at football. In a sea of pyro, you can’t see the game, which is exactly the reason you bought the bloody ticket in the first place. It’s like going to a concert with ear cancelling headphones on.

Almost like the Houses of Parliament in 1605: Delayed the game by 45 minutes ? Not good if you have to catch a train somewhere after the game was supposed to finish ? Even more annoying for people facing transport issues with it being a night match!

Well after two 0-0 games and inc the Leeds game do people still think we have a loud ,vocal and witty support? I understand that the last two games have been dire and not much to cheer about but it didn't stop the Coventry fans from supporting their team well .We are so old fashioned in our song choice and when we do sing lately its only in response to the other fans singing and even then we just copy their song. I also thought Leeds and Sunderland were quiet too. The "younger" clubs with less established shall we say history and support are certainly embracing the new football culture. I think we need to do so as well. Moaning about drums ,flags, banners, standing, flares, light show ,fan zone, "ultra section" just about anything what wants to deviate from our tradition we moan.Any rant over,it did my head in Saturday not a peep in the seats but load in the concourse.

Point proven cheers Smarty answers really just cement the argument, and do Liverpool's Kop all wear black no they don't and neither do many other clubs have "black shell suits" as you say. Just a loud passionate section to increase the atmosphere.

Also I chose my words very carefully around loud and witty fan base, which again you chose to ignore. If you think Alex Neil’s football encourages then that’s an entirely different subject. Have a good day Agent K 👍🏻

Ok I think the club is in a rut and our fans are consequently not at their best either. Never said I didn’t. What we don’t need is some lame as fuck ultras section to paper over the real issues. If you’re so bothered, start one yourself.

If an ultra type culture was encouraged there’d be potential for political extremists to push in. Would you want a St Pauli or a Green Brigade at Stoke? Just leave us to it for better or worse.

Maybe even start WW3 ,best just leave it then let all the other clubs deal with it. Whatever. So you come up with a ludicrous analogy against any change and your response to my answer is "whatever". This isn't going anywhere is it. I thinks its best to stick to sitting in silence then, I should have known better.
