50 years ago today since we failed to qualify for West Germany. The final nail in the coffin of our being a major international force. The first nail was Leon. The penultimate was Katowice.

"He's a clown, this goalkeeper..." Given Clough had no time for pundits I assume he gave whoever came out with that pearler a piece of his mind...

"He's a clown, this goalkeeper..." Given Clough had no time for pundits I assume he gave whoever came out with that pearler a piece of his mind... He had no time for pundits, but it was a lucrative little side job for him to create his personality cult. When league games started being televised live the first was Forest at Spurs and Clough was opposed to it and, quite honestly, was a bit of a mardarse. When Ardiles and Villa joined Spurs their first game was at Forest and he wouldn't allow it on match of the day or star soccer. A huge occasion with the novelty of world cup winners playing and we had to make do with a few photos on match of the day. Despite it all he was the ultimate media whore.

But for Hunter being indecisive momentarily we'd surely have beaten them. Mind you, drawing at home to Wales didn't help. And Poland away was an awful way for a man like Bobby Moore to leave the big stage. It wasn't his last cap but he lost his aura.

England has never been a major international force so not sure about the final nail in the coffin? We were between 1966 and 1970. We were among the favourites in 1970. Had it not been for Gordon Banks having a bad tummy we'd have certainly reached the semi.

Doesn't make us an international force I would say winning the world cup makes you an international force mate. One tournament says nothing other than we had one group of very good players, in fact we had a core of three world class players in Banks, Moore and Charlton.

Doesn't make us an international force You said 'never' That was simply wrong If you had said overall England have not been an international force that would be different

Doesn't make us an international force You said 'never' That was simply wrong If you had said overall England have not been an international force that would be different International force 66-70? 66 qualified as hosts won home tournament 68 qualified by winning home championship, won one knockout game 70 qualified as holders won two games lost two games. I am in no way belittling the win in 66 which was won with a team built around a core of world class players and yes the Banks illness was extremely unlucky. However, that did translate into being an international force. We weren't and never have been. Brazil, Germany, Argentina and despite their recent woes Italy are the international heavyweights.

Overall of course they are England won the actual World Cup and had a better team in 1970 For that period they were an international force 1968 was a maximum of 3 games anyway No one is saying England are overall an international force but you said never never is just wrong Be like saying Preston have never been a force in club football overall of course they are not but for a period they were

When we won the world cup in 66 we were an international force. You said we have never been an international force which is not true. If you had said we have never consistently been an international force then you would be correct but you didn't say that mate. Yes we had a very good group of players and a core of three world class players and if you look at every great side through the years that is how they are made up. We clearly were at that time an international force even if it turned out to be brief.
