Is running a team today too big for one manager? I'm convinced we need 2 managers, one who has a defensive mindset and one who is more attack minded. The one thing I notice with flair managers is they seem clueless when it comes to their defence, likewise defensive managers struggle to attack and create chances.
Hughes did brilliantly for a couple of seasons but it was because of the solid defence he was left by Pulis that helped his flair players do their thing knowing they were well covered. We clearly need someone who is defensively astute at the club to drill our defence. Pulis and Hughes could have been a great combination, maybe Hughes needs someone like Bruce side by side with him to be successful.
Do single managers surround themselves with too many like minded people and not enough that challenge them especially in area's of the pitch where they are weakest?
Are there any manager combinations that could be effective and can it work?

Isn’t it bad enough we have to suffer having one dour British dinosaur in charge and now you’re asking for two?!
In all seriousness it would never work. Imagine having Pulis as your defensive coach and telling him you need your full backs get forward and join in attacks.

If the coach fucks up he is sacked and another comes in to work within the existing structure. Having a manager who is responsible for building the structure as well as all the jobs a coach has to do is ridiculous. Having 2 of them isn't the way forward. For one, who manages the midfield?

Yes but a defensively astute manager would be looking which players from midfield could cover the areas left exposed whilst they make those forwards runs and have the midfield players positioned better.

Very few managers seem to be good in both halves of the pitch. Most managers are strong in one area which is normally attack or defence and often the other area is almost always exposed once they start playing against better quality teams.

Pulis and Hughes. Could be good. Pulis centre mids and defence and Hughes wingers and forwards.

Why not have 2 managers? 2 sets of conflicting ideas, beliefs and training methods. Also an extra large salary. Can’t see a problem.😂

Why not employ someone who is good at getting the best out of all his players, other clubs who are successful manage to do it.

Roy Evans and Houllier had a crack at it as I recall and it just didn't work. Egos can't handle it. Interesting suggestion though 🤔

How can you have too many people to lead when the President of China has 1.4 billion and the Pope leads a similar number of Catholics. The trick is to have some sort of vision that most of the people you lead can buy into.

The trick is to have some sort of vision that most of the people you lead can buy into. China leads through fear and force which I doubt would work at a football club. I don't know what the Pope does other than grooming people into believing there is a god, but I doubt he runs a great deal and the majority will be left to the Churches to sort themselves. I imagine churches just tick along the same as they have for many years. The fact that religion is on the decline in the UK and maybe around the world means he ain't doing that good of a job so maybe his position is slowly becoming threatened.

So now your midfielders can’t join the attack. You’re pushing your full backs on to create overloads. All this well drilled bollox is just that bollox. Defensive coaches defend better by using more resources on defence. If they make their defenders any better is absolutely minimal. If you want to defend better you can buy better defenders, throw more resources at it or defend better by defending less. There really isn’t any secret to it.

If only we could have got them down here back in the day instead of Derby and Forest.

That's not strictly true is it, our best season defensively had two players signed by Pulis at the back, that were Shawcross & Wilson. Pieters, Wollscheid, Muniesa & Bardsley were all Sparky's signings.

It's why a manager has an assistant manager and backroom staff, to make his job easier. Two managers is nonsense in any working environment, a power struggle would be inevitable.

In fact, calling him dour is a disservice, he can play quick attacking football.
