Not sure if this has been discussed before but have just binge watched this amazing series on ITV X.
Having lived IN and recalled the times of THE YORKSHIRE RIPPER investigation this series gives a chilling insight into the shortcomings of the inquiries and the mistakes made.
Easy to be wise in hindsight and blame the investigators?
An excellent TV programme well worth watching.
If you are able watch this TV drama you will not be disappointed. Not a fictional drama, A TRUE STORY.

I'll have a look for this. We rarely watch national t.v in our house these days, it's absolutely trash for the most part.
I have though been watching a bit of YouTube lately, there is one particular series about NDE (near death experiences) with witnesses from all walks of life, paramedics, police officers, allsorts, there is definatley a recurring theme of what they go through and what comes next.
When you've watched a few it becomes quite comforting because of the same stuff they all say, the general consensus is as a physical being it's an experience but your soul is infinite and goes to better places. They describe it in great detail

Must watch
my mate Chris's dad was a ringer for Sutcliffe . Prison warder as well...first time I saw his Dad I was about 15 and I couldn't stop staring at him. He must have thought I was a bit odd, he wasn't the nicest bloke either

Brilliant series, loaded cast.
Found myself getting very angry at the police force watching it.

It was a fantastic series. I was surprised how many well known actors were in it, most appearing for just one episode.
I too found myself getting annoyed at the police for their ineptitude and for how they spoke to women, the victims but especially the female police officers. Itâs mad to think that it wasnât so long ago that it was the norm to speak to women like they were second class people.

Binge watched the whole series last week. A powerful and gripping dramatisation that also left me shaking my head at how mysogyny reigned amongst figures like the police. If you've not caught any of the series on TV, do yourself a favour and watch it on ITVx

Really good programme. Good how it emphasised aspects of the police investigation being dismissive of victims because they were prostitutes. Also, at the end it was good when the final victim's mother was appalled by referring to him as the ripper. They knew his name. Use of the label 'ripper' at that stage was disrespectful sensationalism.

No doubt there will be another thread about this in time but it's worth mentioning also that the first episode of the Jimmy Saville dramatistation "The Reckoning' goes out on BBC at 9pm tomorrow, clashing with The Long Shadow. This looks like another 'don't miss' bit of TV. Get your recorders set up or catch both online. The Reckoning

The Reckoning is being shown on the BBC, but was actually made by ITV Studios. Letâs not forget â and the series does show this in archive footage â that after the death of Savile, the BBC chose not to screen a Newsnight special about his victims now coming forward and instead screened a nauseating tribute to him. This remains one of the darkest moments in the channelâs history. It was left to ITV to first deal with the accusations against him in a subsequent documentary called The Other Side of Jimmy Savile.

Watched the first episode last night. Enjoying it so far, going get another one maybe two in tonight. I watched the first episode tonight as well. Interesting how the backdrop of economic struggles for families has ultimately led to some of the womenâs deaths, especially as it echoes the current climate. Toby Stephens again demonstrating what an excellent, versatile actor he is.

Iâve read Michael Biltonâs book that this programme is partially informed by. Itâs the best book on Sutcliffe by a considerable distance and threw new light on the subject and uncovered new evidence. Sutcliffe may well have attacked many, many more women and in one known instance a man. Going back to the programme, ITV have been mining this âreal life dramaâ seam for a while and it was starting to get boring and tedious. Not so, with âThe Long Shadowâ. Aside from it working brilliantly as a subtle, not sensationalist drama, is its attention to detail. The senior police detectives are in some cases close look a likes, and details like using a blue commer van as did one of the victims show the level of research. Itâs also interesting to see the Police baffled because the murders are not committed by a friend, family member or acquaintance like most murders were (still are?). The police in the series have no sense of a sexual component in the murder sequence itâs just a âmission against prostitutesâ or âgood time girlsâ. Exactly how it was. âThe Long Shadowâ also portrays something that is little remembered, the sense that Sutcliffe was this unseen âghostâ who moved and murdered with impunity and kept women off the streets after dark, and dominated talk in works canteens, the pub or wherever people gathered in the North. Iâm glad too it portrays the human tragedy of this case, instead of some crass sensationalism. Great stuff.

Just starting the final episode. What a phenomenal bit of television, fraught with emotion.
As a guy, I can't imagine how teriffying it must be for women with the insane amount of violence they continue to suffer at the hands of men.
