My massive expectation was to not have a massive summer overhaul, buy 17 new players and still be utter, utter dogshit, playing non-sensical formations and tactics that have been proven time and time again by successive managers not to work.

Sunderland came up from League 1 and finished in the playoffs. At what point can we expect the same? I wouldn’t call achieving what clubs like Coventry and Luton can achieve as “Massive”.

I think think the majority of fans expect a manager to deliver us promotion back to the Premier League, after all we have wealthy owners and were in the top league just a few years ago. As well we now see Notts Forest, Luton, Wolves, Burnley, Sheffield United etc all currently in the PL, clubs in the main smaller than us. So if a manager appears not to have the ability to deliver us promotion fans turn on him, if mid table was acceptable to the majority then why call for the manager's head after just 8 games? Notts forest / wolves / Sheff utd are not smaller than us…

I don't expect us to be world beaters, or play beautiful football. I just expect us to be competent. You know, maybe not conceding from every set piece against us...

Wasn’t massive expectations the unpublished sequel to Dickens great expectations?

Coates will also be expecting top 6 because that’s what Neil said was expected of him this season or last Agreed. I think it was at one of the meet the manager things. From memory, I don't think JC said we should be top 6 but more that we should be challenging for the top six. So, presumably on that basis JC would be happy if we just fell short and finished 8th so long as we dropped from 6th to 8th rather than a late surge taking us from 12th to 8th (the latter scenario would not be challenging for top six as we would never have been anywhere near it during the season). That's my interpretation anyway.

What 'reality' are you basing that on Geoff? I believe the vast majority of fans see us as a PL club, based on support, wealthy owners and recent history. Therefore I think the pressure will come from them on any manager who fails to deliver promotion.

I don’t think most had massive expectations for this season, a top ten finish or a tilt at the playoffs, that’s about it though.
There should be massive expectations though and should have been the last 6 seasons, we’ve got very, very rich owners who should be able to compete with the best, attract a talented manager and sell a compelling vision of the club and where we want to get to.
As fans I think we often undersell our potential and accept second best.

'Recent history' is five successive bottom half Championship finishes Geoff; any signs of genuine progress would be greatly and greedily accepted by the majority.

The Massive-expectation is that whoever Super JC picks next will be any better than what hes given us up to now............. Problem is though. The more than decent managers will see what's going on at Stoke and give it a miss. A poison chalice is what we're becoming with each successive failure. Totally left field one and I know plenty will shoot me down but I think the time has come for Roy Keane. I think he's matured a lot and could turn out to be a decent manager. Got a promotion on his CV and kept them in the Premierleague. Okay it went wrong the season after but that was a while ago. Will attract players. International management experience with MON. He'd bring work ethic. And I hear he's looking at another go of management. Lives locally Could work I reckon maybe 🤔 Tin hat on......😆

But you only have to read messages on this Board to know there is huge frustration at our failure to to regain our PL status, that's why I think any manager has to deliver promotion sooner rather than later.

If I asked a taxi driver to take me from Stoke to Manchester and he thought that expectation was too much, I’d still hope he could at least get me to somewhere like Congleton. This bloke’s halfway down the M5 on his way to Lands End.

Notts forest / wolves / Sheff utd are not smaller than us… Well they're not bigger, is that fair? I think if you were to create a tier list of all the middling sized clubs (of which us and those 3 fall into IMO) I reckon all 3 would be above us in that list, and there would be no way of gerrymandering the criteria to change it. It was an odd selection of clubs to make the point you were making. Swap any two of those three for Brentford/Bournemouth and then you have a point in saying " clubs in the main smaller than us.".

It's all about how you are reaching your conclusion when it comes to size (and does it even matter!) Back in the day it was measured by success and success was linked to size of gates etc. Nowadays it's all about money and who can and who can't get to the promised land of the Premier League. So as far as that's concerned which is now the basis of modern day football Stoke are massive with the 6th richest owners in the country. We are massively underachieving.

I wouldn't say expectations are massive, if expectations are crippling your performances then as a high level pro footballer, you're in the wrong profession. However, I'm sure the uneeded personal remarks, and online public personal abuse they receive can have an effect. It's cowardly aswell Yes, but do we have any "high level" pros? I'd say we have medium level, veering towards lower level, i.e. League 1 football next season. So if you expect them to be high level, and they're lower level, it could be said that Stoke fans, with you as one of many examples, have unrealistic expectations. I'd say Championship football is a high level overall. If you're competent at your job no expectations are going to trouble you, quality & experience takes over. These are Championship players, we don't expect them to win the Premier league, we expect them to do well in the championship

It's an expression that he uses, to take pressure off himself. It's like we expect more than he can give. Maybe that's true, & he's not the man for the job!

Sadly it’s not about him anymore , Jared. martin and he have a created a squad totally inadequate for any level fo English professional football and certainly this one . No manager can make this a decent team or even one to stay up but I agree we have to Terry just so frustrating so many of us called it last may Behave yourself You were saying much the same when I said the direction of Travel was terrible last year. This squad of players isn't good enough to stay in this league.
