As we wallow around trying to find some style that works, lurching ever closer to an inevitable change of manager, leads me to think what is our DNA? Speak to Spurs, Liverpool Man Utd fans they expect high energy, entertaining attacking football, Man City, Arsenal expect a high press, total football solution. Drop down the leagues, Norwich, expect flowing attacking football, Millwall the aggressive high energy in your face style. If we were to identify our DNA and strategic direction that we instil throughout the club what would we go for? For me it’s that stable resilient no nonsense core, based around a keeper, 2 brutal centre half’s, a no nonsense defensive midfielder, 2 hard working wingers that can pick up their defensive duties as well as attack, a maverick centre midfielder to create , a grafting target man and another skilful/ maverick forward, high energy, in your face, aggressive but with the ability to play a bit. at times as well. I hope for the day that we settle on a strategy and recruit for it as opposed to lurching from one managers whim to another

Not sure I believe in an inherent DNA - every set of fans thinks their club's 'way' is fast, attacking football, because it's what we all want to see, but when people start talking about 'The Derby County Way' it starts getting a bit silly.
It's possible to develop an identity at any time if you get someone in with a vision and recruit players and managers who fit it and can realise it.
We had that opportunity this summer and have still somehow managed to muddy the waters again. If Neil is sacked, Martin (assuming he stays) needs to look at the squad, who the key people to build around are, what style gets the best out of them, and find a manager who's well versed in that and has some ideas of his own as well.

Our only "DNA" or overall plan is to give the manager total control. We don't actually have a plan or vision and don't select managers based on anything other than who takes our fancy at the time.

I believe in a team having a spine and a playing method but I don't believe clubs have a DNA. Unless you're New'astle and a bit of a romantic for a club that has won the square root of sod all since rationing.

Pre war & after,we were known has a footballing side, also in the 60/70s. Plus for a while under Hughes.
Since then we don't seem to be anything,we haven't played decent football since just before we were relegated,we have been poor defence wise for a while now,and not prolific in front of goal either.
If we had a DNA then it was been known as a decent footballing side, but has now been lost for quite a while now.
We haven't won much in our history, but we could look forward on knowing on our day we could play the best off the park.

Our DNA genuinely seems to be dour grinding football. In my supporting there was the odd blip of Barker pre-POMO, Mills for a glorious few months, Lou, Pulis at home pre Cup Final, Hughes pre League Cup semi and MON during survival season.
Apart from that it's been mainly dour. Supporters seem to like it in a 'We'll play how we want' way.
Perhaps Pulis was right in his steak and chips analogy.

Since relegation, we've likely changed our DNA in order to avoid arrest for false-impersonation of a football team.
Agree that giving every manager total control is NOT a good idea. Model has to change to where our owners just put the money up and let football people run it. Free up the manager to manage the on-field product - none of the past ones were up to doing it all and "multi-tasking" is just the latest mental-illness in our society anyway. When it isn't running right, owners still have the opportunity to step in and fire up the revolving door again.

And I think that we always at least were known to have a defense, not a pushover. But in reality, football clubs don't seem to have a DNA in this modern world of firing managers every year. (or in Watford's case, every week)

Our DNA is direct football/long ball switched to counter attack once we get a goal isn't it?
There's been too much build from the back, slow passing from side to side over the last several years. And at the moment we can't even manage that.

The answer to the question is simple, our DNA is failure.
In our 160 year existence we've won only one major trophy, that was 51 years ago.
The tone was set in our first season of the football league, in 1888. We lost the first game of the inaugural season and finished bottom of the league.
Of the original 12 founder members we're the only club not to win either the League or the FA Cup. Our only FA cup final appearance ended in defeat. The only occasion we came close to winning the League (1947) we cocked it up and fell at the final hurdle.
We seem to accept that we are simply there to make up the numbers, just happy to to take part. Fleeting moments of "success" are followed by long periods of abject failure. Sustained success is not for the likes of us.
I have no idea why our DNA is such. There's something about our club that has and continues to dash our hopes of glory. Managers that have previously been relatively successful continually find the Stoke job a poisoned chalice. The same could be said for many players, their form drops alarmingly as soon as they put on the striped shirt. Who knows why? I don't.
Never mind though, I'll be at Bristol on Saturday, the stubborn optimist, as ever.

I feel that kind of football has taken up a lot of the last 50 years.

Not sure we had a reputation as a long ball side then? Boskamp wasn't a long ball merchant either.
