I'm still trying to make sense of the bonkers decision to play 3-5-2 at the weekend and the only thing I can think is that he's trying to overload the backline in order to keep a clean sheet to give them confidence, which has obviously backfired massively.
In essence he doesn't trust the defence enough to go with a back four.
Does anyone know what defensive formation Rose and McNally played together in at Coventry?
Surely just go 4 at the back, pick a centre half pairing and get them used to playing together.

Not a surprise he doesn't trust them but I'd imagine he thought they played well enough against Huddersfield so wanted to stick with it which makes sense. Edit: I don't think the problem is getting used to each other though, it's constant individual errors or inability to do the basics.

Can't help but think 4-2-3-1 would really suit these lot, then just get the three interchanging.
Gives you that flexibility then you have the defensive balance of Pearson sitting, harrying and winning possession with Burger just ahead of him as the link-up man.
Wesley as the big front man, then you've got options in behind and can replace with Mmaee if needed.

Everyone on here when they seen that formation and selection on Sunday knew we were getting shafted.
Why can’t he see it?

The logical conclusion is that he really doesn't trust this lot in a back two - so he went with a back three to try to keep things tight.

Rose was frozen out when he wouldn’t commit his future to the club, and McNally took his place. Luke played all his games on the right of a three for Coventry, but he played in a back four most of the time at Oxford the season before. He’s a terrific defender and we are lucky to have him. I just don’t think he and others are being given enough clear tactical instruction. It’s a different message game to game and the defence are left exposed by holes from midfield. In the meantime, Wilmot has won the most headers out of anyone in the division. I trust this defence. But I don’t trust Neil or his coaching team to get the best out of them.

Apart from Wilmot, who he gave an extended contract to, he signed them all. He built a defence with no dominant figure and plonked a keeper behind them who is rooted to his line.
If there is a lack of trust anywhere, it should be in the direction of the manager

Best form of defence.....is attack. If we set up positively to make teams shit their pants then the defence wouldn't be an issue. Yesterday the focus was all on the defence and they felt it.

All 3 have mistakes in them.
All 3 have no mongrel in them.
It’s not a recipe for clean sheets.
So I don’t think he does trust them and nor should he( forget about he recruited 2 of them ).
The only way to protect them is to only play 2 of them and reduce the risk by a 1/3 and have 2 sitting in front of them continuously like the Pullis cage.
Pearson and Burger should never leave our own half.
Let Gooch and Hoover Bomb forward and support the 4 forwards.
Travers
Hoover / Junior McNally / Rose Wilmont Gooch / Stevens
Pearson Burger
Vidigal Johnson / Bae Campbell / Hack
Wesley / Maee
If 2 become regular centre backs and show some consistency then move to a 4/3/3 with just Pearson protecting the centre backs.

He could play two at the back and it’d make no difference. He needs to take off the shackles before it’s too late if he has any pride in the project

I don’t disagree about taking the shackles off but 3/5/2 was not the panacea for success under O’Neil and now Neil.
When we play that system we expose our defensive frailties, loose the midfield battle and generally lose the game.
Keep doing the same things and expect a different result ????
I think the current group of players can be welded together and be very competitive as long as we understand our strengths and weaknesses and forget about playing tactical battles.

Likewise josh Tymon
Whether they are better than bang average is another story.

I was also sure a few weeks ago that this was "the plan", obviously AN has fucking lost the plot somewhere and adopted "fuck knows what" tactics. It really is as frustrating, as it is bizarre??? My worry is he is a stubborn arrogant bastard, and the more criticism he gets the more he digs in. However a coupe more staggering teamsheets, and wank performances and the crowd turn and he will be gone, up to you Alex!!!

I still dont understand why he thought Rose, Mcnally, Stevens where the answer. Abysmal.

I had hopes for him but he's just not delivering anywhere. Give me one thing we can say is positive about anything he's implemented. Be gone by the next international break I reckon. Such a let down he really is.

I think it's quite clear that he doesn't. He's publicly criticised the defense and the constant stream of mistakes a number of times. But as we all know, he was responsible for building this defence over the summer and if it's not good enough (and I think it's pretty clear that it isn't) then he's accountable for it.

I really believe he has to start trusting the younger players. He should be trying Lowe and Tezgel when fit at centre forward. He should give Sidibe a go in midfield in place of Laurent and Tchamadeu looks big and strong enough and could solve the right full back position. It is about time Neil started to look towards the future not make do and mend. Stop this poncing about at the back and look to play forwards and get the ball in the box at every opportunity. Keeping the ball just for the sake of possession just slows us down. Play forward quickly and take a few risks. I am sure the fans would get behind the team playing aggressively at all times.

The concerning thing for me is that we were prepared to pay £750,000 for Rose, who Coventry dropped from their first team and only kept on to help with squad depth as they were in the promotion mix.
We all saw after watching him a couple of times that he wasn't up to this level, yet Alex Neil was all set to chuck three quarters of a million quid away on him. We've let a better defender than him leave for Bristol Rovers for £300,000. This is why we're in such a mess- we keep employing idiots.

The wing backs were constantly too far forward and the back 3 were too narrow. That left gaping holes out wide which gave Hull a simple long out ball every time. For the second goal the Hull player picked a long ball up on the touch line and made 20 yards infield without being challenged. He was then on the edge of the box and able to get a shot away. With a right back in place he probably wouldn’t have got to the long ball. He certainly wouldn’t have made 20 yards unchallenged. The balance between attack and defence is wrong, probably because our wing backs are having to press too hard up field because our strikers aren’t doing it. From that point of view we are missing Brown. Campbell isn’t capable of doing it and nor is Wes. The press isn’t working and it’s unbalancing the team. Our two new centre backs aren’t coping with people running at them. Nor are they able to operate out wide. I’m sure it will settle down with a few small adjustments and more time to gel. We need our strikers taking their chances so we don’t need to be so offensive. We are constantly chasing the game and leaving open spaces all over the pitch. It gives the opposition an easy way out. Basically AN is big on the press but the players either haven’t mastered it yet or they aren’t capable of it. He has to sort out which is which

I had always thought that conventional logic is that if you have a dodgy defence, play a simple back four and play deeper, with more protection from midfield.
Keep it as simple as possible, look to nick goals on the counter and tbf we have some quick players to help us with that

No clearly.
Which begs so many questions.
I got told we were signing Rose weeks before it was announced and said it was a centre half that would be back up at best and that I didn’t really rate.
What was he expecting?

In my opinion it’s a sign of a poor manager who’s clueless and tactically inept week after week, he’s outthought embarrassingly most weeks.
Honestly the original post refers to the defense but AN is totally clueless throughout the entire team, shocking manager.
What annoys me more is I can guarantee that the owners won’t be thinking of talking to AN successor “yet” when any decent club should realise he’s not that good and yet they’ve give him funds but he’s blatantly ignored key positions.
