Can't believe I'm having to post such a ridiculous thread but there we go. I'm currently in an informal dispute (no solicitors yet) with my neighbour over a fence and it seems to be escalating and getting worse. I approached the neighbour in question to explain my intentions to replace the entire fence, posts and gravel boards at my expense. He did raise some initial concerns over maintaining the same height which I said would not be a problem. He also said that it was his boundary to maintain but I said I was happy to pay regardless and he was satisfied that he was getting a free fence. I checked my Property Information Form which has it down as Shared as such I felt happy to proceed. I have reason to believe this is erroneous. A week later, the fence was replaced. He has since engaged in a letter writing campaign, hand delivering increasingly hostile and unreasonable letters, basically saying the work I've had done is unacceptable. He only hand delivers these letters when my partner and kids are home which they are finding uncomfortable. His most recent was delivered just as they were heading out to school. He has repeatedly shouted at the guys who were trying to do the work and went as far as parking his car in between their van and my house while they were trying to get on. When I try to have a sensible discussion with him, he tends to back down and see a bit more reason but as soon as the conversation concludes, he's back to trying to intimidate my family and shouting at the blokes. Again, this is only ever when I'm out the house and unable to intervene. The boundary on the title plan is denoted by inward Ts as his to maintain, but he had failed to do for 30 years, hence me taking it upon myself to offer. He has contested this in writing and claims there was nothing wrong with the timber and posts which were damaged but I've plenty of photos that show the fence looking pretty rough. I suppose that's just opinions really. His letters are mostly full of fabrications and made up nonsense like that I didn't approach him with my intentions (this was witnessed by several people including the workers) and that the fence was removed before he had any chance to say anything. Again, the fence was removed a full 7 days after. Most of this can be easily disproven. What he actually wants... is simply the smooth/front side. He wants me to flip the fence panels. I am quite happy to do this... It's a fucking fence. However he's also put in writing that he expects me to maintain the fence going forward in case of storm damage or weather damage. His argument is: I commissioned it, it's my job to maintain it entirely at my expense. Maintain it, but also give him the fronts? He'll have me painting his house at this rate... We've hit an impasse quite frankly. He has offered no contribution financially and I never expected one. I went round at one point and suggested that if he wants the fronts, he make a very small contribution but after waiting a few days for me to go back to work, he simply hand delivered yet another letter rejecting this proposal with increasingly hostile language. He has also put in writing that he has refused to inspect the posts, gravel boards and fence and therefore any issues in the future, he will expect me to sort at my expense as he does not acknowledge that it has been constructed to a standard he approves. I will flip the panels but my concern is that by doing so, I'm implicitly agreeing to the terms he is setting out. He has repeatedly threatened legal action and keeps making comments like "this will end very badly for you". I've since refrained from further face-to-face conversation. They are not productive. I've spent hours on Google and even phoned Myers in Burslem who couldn't believe that it has got this far. The solicitor said "it's a wooden fence and I charge 300 pound an hour". Anyone else dealt with something similar? Anyone legally qualified to advise? Feel free to PM. There's every chance this could escalate further. Poo on his doorstep

Every time you're pissed pinch ornaments, gnomes etc from the whole street. Once you have a massive stash in your garage display them on his front lawn covertly through the night and watch on as the neighbourhood knocks on to get them back the next morning. You're moving anyway so fuck 'em š That is perfect, and heāll have great fun doing it. Got to turn a negative into huge positive in these cases. Depending on Metalheads relationship with his other neighbours it might be a good idea to get them all in on it for maximum satisfaction I have a great relationship with everyone else. There's some cracking people living in this street. Shame he isn't one of them.

Why am glad I don't have neighbours Had a similar neighbour years ago who would constantly put letters through the door, one was that my car was too big . Was parked on my property !!. Never responded and just binned all future letters , nosey woman with nothing better to do and no need to give her the time of day. She soon gave up...actually she might have died come to hink of it , one or the other. I would leave as it is as you have witnesses and will cost him as someone has said and just ignore him from now on I'm amazed. People writing letters to each other. Really? These days?

I had a similar issue in my old house. The neighbours damaged the tree that semi supporting the fence and subsequently the panels rotted and listed. In my eyes it should have been a 50/50 cut for a replacement fence as they had a bloody big rottweiler and we had a cavvie and if it had attacked my dog i would have been doing time for nailing the fucker. In the end i paid for it cos i was sick of the bickering and constant shit, but i never spoke to the cunt again, however i had the last laugh as his missus divorced him cos he was a wanker. š¤£š¤£
My current house is in a block of 3 on the end. The middle house is rented whereas the end 2 are owned. The fence between mine and the renting neighbours was virtually falling to bits. Every now and then the rotten panels were replaced by either myself or the young couple next door so we had panels in opposite faces up and down the boundary, 8 panels in total. When they left to buy a house, it stood empty for a month, so i took the opportunity and expense to replace all the panels with high end ones. I got them fitted so that all the faces were on my side. Whether that's correct or not i dont know as there was no clear owner of the facing side with the old panels so im taking it as a bit of good fortune for my quick opportunity to improve my garden.

I'm curious where you live now to avoid neighbours? In Cheshire...just aren't many houses around here. There was when I moved in but woke up one day and they were all gone Is that you Denise? Sorry, couldn't help it. However it sounds bloody bliss mate and I'm extremely jealous right now. You've provided some excellent and reassuring advise via PM. Hopefully in a few months I'll come back to this with a more positive outlook

I live in a flat. During my 20+ years here I have only had problems with two neighbours. The only neighbours we have had during all those years who speaks English actually. Possibly they are over represented? š§
One from Canada next door who took away my clothes from the drying room inside of the laundry room saying I had had them there for too long, which I hadn't. I'm the King of the laundry room so I told her I was allowed to have the drying room according to the rules one hour after the laundry pass have ended, just like everyone else.
The other problem neighbour is a neighbour from Ireland. He can't stand water dripping in my bathroom so he rush to his bathroom each time I hand wash something and put it to dry, water dripping in the tub. He bangs the floor loudly, my inner ceiling, like a mad man. I don't know what's wrong with him. If he thinks I'm pissing in the tub or something? Maybe he never washes any garments by hand himself? He also bangs loudly if I watch tv after 8 p.m. Numskull. Every film worth seeing starts at 9 p.m. or 11 p.m. He never replies when I say hello.
However, I have discovered how to stop all complaints whatever way they are expressed. Start to sing! When I do everything gets quiet. Dead quiet. They even mute their tv.

Did your neighbour have the āniceā fronts originally? If so, heās probably pissed off as maybe he thinks youāve replaced a fence (which in his mind didnāt need replacing) and now heās got the crappy sides?
He does sound like a right knob though.

He did indeed. I offered to board the back of the new fences which makes them double-sided (essentially) but he outright rejected this offer. To date, these are the solutions I've offered, none of which have been amenable: The day after they were removed, I offered to reinstate the old fence. He refused because he said that I couldn't vouch for their condition. The day after they were removed, I also offered to paint the rears of the new fence at my expense, because he had expressed an interest in doing so. Not happy, because he want's the fronts. The day after they were removed, I also offered to supply him with the front of 5 high quality second hand panels and sell the new ones to recover costs. Not happy, because I can't prove they are better than the ones that were in before. A week after, I offered to board the backs. He asked for a photo demonstrating what it would look like... I provided a photo. He said he would think about it. Rejected this offer, didn't explain why. Another week after the above, flip the panels but he contributes towards the boarding of the backs for my side (a small amount). I always think the solution with these things are to compromise. I strongly believe that I have tried very hard in this situation to come up with some form of compromise... I think for him, this is something else and it's about getting one over me. His last letter included a whole bunch of absolute rubbish about noise and cars parked in the road.... all irrelevant. The guys a tit, in my opinion. Anyone got 5 second hand fence panels going?

Build a new fence on your land. That was my first thought when I read this thread. My late brother had a neighbour very much like the one metalhead has so he simply erected a complete new fence on his land to the maximum permitted height and that was the end of the matter. Simple really and the people next door could do nothing about it. OS.

I'm surprised you aren't around there with Billy's old cart, chopping it down and selling it for firewood on the steps of the Kings Arms (Boothen Ender Billy article still fresh in my mind after re-reading 'With Chayze' recently)

Simple really and the people next door could do nothing about it. OS. I wish that I had done this. This was an option when the work was being completed. What put me off is my old man had a similar style double-fence at his old house with his being just on the inside of the boundary. The neighbour then removed their fence and basically tried a bit of a land grab. Fucking neighbours!!
