Mentioned Gunnarsson on the Burger thread his one man defensive display in the 9 man Styles Gillingham play off defeat was possibly the best individual defensive display I've seen from a Stoke player Truely awesome
Not far behind was Mame Diouf as emergency right back v Chelsea in League cup win, did we have 10 men in that one too?
At the other end Chambo master class at Blues in 82 is often referred to with awe 40+ years later
These performances stick in the memory
Any others to bring up?

Hoekstra's hat trick against Reading in 03/04 is the obvious one. Actually, I'd go as far as to say his 01/02 performance at home to Reading (when we won 2-0 with goals from Cooke and Bjarni) was even better. An obscure game, often overlooked, but one of the best out-of-the-blue Stoke performances I can remember. Gudjon put him up front not long after Thorne was sold. It was like watching Dennis Bergkamp in his prime. Just a shame he couldn't do it week in, week out and got injured a few months later.

Alan Hudson's debut v Liverpool
Wasn't a one-off subsequently, as we soon came to know, but at the time had never seen anything like it in a Stoke shirt.

I was about to mention Hoekstra. He was a player. My old man knows his football & must have been to thousands of games down the years. Even now he still talks of Hudson’s performance against either Leeds or Liverpool??? being the best thing he’s ever seen. Heard some of the more distinguished gents on here mention it more than once. Sure someone will remember…

Kris Commons debut v Sheffield Wednesday away was one that made me very excited. I think he was 17 and he just looked a real player. It was Cotterill's first game and I think he gave 3 teenagers a debut which was exciting in itself.
John Tudor has to be the ultimate one-off performance
2 goals on his debut and then 30 games of complete and utter dross. He was awful after that.

Mama Sidibe. Derby away. 2007 or 2008? Midweek. On his tod up front. Assume RF10 was injured. Led the line so well. Lungs of a racehorse. Seemed to play better with increased responsibility.Did we sneak a win or draw? Scrappy goal from Higgy?

In over 50 years watching Stoke has to be Hudson for me but my father may have said Matthews or Franklin?

Amdy Faye against Man Utd at home in our first Prem season.
He was absolutely everywhere, even got knocked clean out at one stage and still carried on.

He wasn't a player I ever liked or rated but those two goals did more to seal promotion than any other single performance I can think of.

The ones that stick in the memory for me are those that were also one-offs by players who were hopeless thereafter - I seem to remember Jose Andrade being great in one game and Ramadan (against Fulham?) looking like prime Messi. I might have hallucinated both however.

Imbula away at Chelsea looked like an absolute world beater.
Got an away game at tottenham in my head aswell, think Sorensen got injured in the warm up(?) so Simonsen had to step in last minute & played a blinder.

Tuncay against Fulham in the snow? Think he went off after about 30 minutes. Think Dempsie scored a worldie the same match.

I told my Arsenal-supporting mate Imbula would "improve any team in the Prem" after Chelsea and Bournemouth. It's a jibe I'm hearing from him to this day whenever we sign a new player.

I recall Geoff Cameron getting man of the match by Sky in his debut, a 0-0 home draw with Arsenal. He played in central midfield that day but was soon switched to defence rather than being given a run as a midfielder.

It was a couple of days after 9/11 and I think the first home game since Thorney’s sale to Cardiff. There are things he did with the ball that day that I couldn’t even describe never mind actually attempt! If I could watch 90 minutes of any Stoke game from this millennium again it would be this game just to watch that Hoekstra performance again. The game where he scored the hat-trick is often remembered as his greatest but for me it was the one in September 2001.
