Only a week or so away from this one. Must admit console gaming has gone by the wayside for me in the last two years but I’m really excited by this one.
Any one got the early access lined up?

I might give it a go on PC through game pass. I won’t be wasting time downloading it until I’ve seen a few reviews of gamers though as Bethesda’s recent releases have been horror shows at launch.

Just watched an IGN review fully expecting a 10/10. They gave it a 7 which rings alarm bells knowing what they’re usually like scoring AAA. Also said it’s not very good until at least 12 hours in!

I’m on the early access and got to say it’s fantastic, one of those I can’t stop playing. Didn’t really get into Fallout series tbh but for this type of game it’s very good - comparable to Skyrim if not better imo. Perfect for the forthcoming Autumn and Winter months!

How are you finding all of the loading screens? I’ve seen some footage and reviews and it looked bloody awful. It seemed disjointed and broke immersion but that was just my opinion. I haven’t played after watching that.

Just watched a bit of gameplay on Youtube, the graphics aren't as good as I expected and as always I feel it would be better in 3rd person ha.

You can switch between first & third person at the touch of a button as often as you like. I still can't stand the game, I think it's biggest problem is how much talking there is, well, it's not so much the amount of talking, RDR2 has loads of talking & cut scenes but they all felt worth while, and the characters all had bags of personality & charisma, they made you care about them, and that's Starfield's main problem, the characters are completely unlikeable, they're boring, they have zero personality, zero charisma, the graphics on the characters are awful and the voice acting is atrocious. You could talk to a cardboard cutout & connect with it and care about it more than any of the characters in this game, and when there is so much talking that's a huge problem.

I’m the exact opposite 😂 I think it's because i grew up on Resident Evil, Tomb Raider, Dino Crisis, Silent Hill etc. Then I stopped playing games towards the end of the PS2, probably around 2007ish and by that point i was only really playing PES. So once the FPS era boomed with Gears, COD etc I'd stopped playing games and the boom passed me by.

I grew up on games like Half Life, Doom, Quake, etc. so first person feels natural to me. Prey is a modern great FPS. When I play third person I always think the screen is cluttered with the character. I’m also not keen on the camera spins you can do to see round corners and stuff. Having said all that, I’ve really enjoyed some third person games like Red Dead, Valheim, etc. Think it just depends how much immersion they offer for me.

After spending hours yesterday downloading the 125+ GB for this game I’ve just given it a go. My first impressions are;
1. Loading screens completely ruin any fluid gameplay or immersion.
2. Ghastly UI and inventory.
3. Poor flight mechanics and combat.
4. After praying about for over an hour I got to the first mission, some research lab with pirates in it. Cleared it out virtually, went to open a final door and some leach thing popped out of the floor. I shot it before it finished clipping out, which crashed the game. Bravo Bethesda, bravo!
I’ll give it another go but not impressed so far. Glad I’m using game pass for it as I’d be pissed off if I’d paid £50+ for this!

I’m probably 18+ hours in and I’m really enjoying it.
I’m progressing the main storyline but also doing the ocassional side mission. There seems to be an abundance of side missions/ faction missions and Activities to do. I started one last night which was supposed to be a quick rescue mission it’s taken me 2 hours so far and I’ve not finished it yet.
Obviously these things are subjective but whilst I was super impressed by Fallout4 I also struggled with the combat. I find this far easier.

I just can’t get on board with the map and subsequent loading screens. I find it completely disjointed. I don’t understand why I can fast travel everywhere when it completely takes away all of the immersion you’d get from walking to your ship, climbing the ramp, walking through it, sitting in the cockpit, plotting a course, etc. I just find I press tab, press L to bring the mission up, fast travel there, do mission, repeat. I saw a few reviews saying the game is just a series of boxes or incidents you click to enter. This is so accurate and it’s such a shame as it could have been so much more. The whole perk system gets on my tits as well.

Very much enjoying the game - it's buggy and the interface is often annoying but I love the depth of it. I can understand the fast travel option killing continuity but I think I'd be more annoyed having to traipse back to the ship after every mission.

I just found the whole experience disjointed. I think it would have been better to either go full on immersion like No Man’s Sky, or allow fast travel directly to where you want to get to (this happens on some missions). I didn’t understand why they went half way, like fast travel to your ship, then fast travel to a planet, then fast travel to a sector, etc. if you’re having fast travel just have it to the point you need to get to, otherwise the endless loading screens just become an annoyance. I’ve restarted No Man’s Sky after playing Starfield to get a fix of what Bethesda promised.

I gotta be honest as much as I like the game (maybe I’m trying to like it too much 🧐) the fast travel is disjointed and definitely needs fixing. I found the best way forward was to ignore your map and just use missions and fast travel from there.

I thought that too, but I think this just undermines the scale of what they were trying to deliver. I’ve heard they may have been restricted by the engine they used, but NMS showed what could be possible. After Fallout 76, Redfall (which was fucking tragic), and Starfield, I think Bethesda is skating on thin ice in terms of its reputation.

Ok I’m about 15 hours in now it’s finally feeling like a Bethesda game. It’s still missing something I can’t put my fingers on yet it may be the UI but I’ve now got a crew an outpost an upgraded ship and I can hold my own against ships in space combat. Let’s see where the rabbit hole goes

Well they didn't make Redfall so think they got away with that one Arkane developed the game and Bethesda was the publisher. Both were owned by Zenimax and subsequently Xbox Game Studios, so they’re all part of the same holding company. Bethesda have also released press statements regarding how they will continue to develop and support the game despite it flopping at launch. Arkane used to be brilliant by the way. Prey and Dishonoured were great games, but they’ve gone downhill since then.
