Rotherham,Ipswich and now Millwall 3 goals out of the 4 conceded in the league. Something is this league especially you cannot afford to do and especially against Millwall

Yep, was clear as day from the Everton friendly. They will be the death of us this season if we don't sort it out.

Todays was especially embarrassing, conceding from a “long throw” that barely made it into the penalty area.

It's the same as every other season, we don't have a good enough striker, and we don't have a good enough centre back

Yep, we don’t seem to win enough of the initial balls into our box, and even when we do it’s often a poor or misdirected clearance. This then leads to lots of second ball situations that we’re also poor at anticipating and battling for, though I’m hoping that from here on in Burger and Pearson will help a lot with that side of things.

It’s our biggest issue. It also seems like the easiest to address by simply bringing in a solid defender.
Being that vulnerable from any situation is problematic.

Defenders need to watch the fucking ball instead of trying to block and watch what the opposite players are doing - this modern way of facing the opposition off a corner or set piece is crazy

Even though an easy win, we could not defend corners or freekicks A better side will punish us

That was the one moan for me tonight. Fantastic performance etc but they won almost every single ball that was delivered into our box. Our set piece defending is really poor.

For some reason we don't seem to jump much when the ball comes into the box from a corner or free kick, it seems that way anyway.

Think they won 4 balls off set pieces scored 1, should have done better with another.
It’s a worry, is it the way we set up?

Looking through the stats, it's unusual for an Alex Neil to concede so many from set pieces.
In his first season at Preston, they conceded 17, the 6th highest in the league.
The next year it was 21, the second highest in the league. Incidentally, they also scored 20 goals from set pieces, the 4th most in the league.
After that, he tightened things up.
17th most goals conceded in 2019/20 (14) and 2020/21 (11)
Sunderland were the second best team in the third division at conceding goals from set pieces, but he was only there for half of the season.
Our record last season was a respectable 10 goals conceded (a couple under O'Neill?), which was the 17th most, while Sunderland ended up conceding the third most goals - but they did have Tony Mowbray.

Was it Rose who lost his man for the goal last night? Seemed to be more man for man.

Was it Rose who lost his man for the goal last night? Seemed to be more man for man. The real problem (all night) was the player defending the space on the edge of the 6 yard box at the near post. (The old Nick Powell role). For the goal it was Pearson who was pretty static. For the next corner from the other side, there was just a huge yawning space with no-one defending that space. (Fortunately the Rotherham player put the ball wide). We need to find someone for that role who is mobile and good enough with his head to attack and clear most/all corners played into that area.

It was indeed Rose who lost his man on Tuesday, if you look at the goals we've conceded so far, if he's been on the pitch he has been at fault in some way. the second at Ipswich was especially embarrassing! He is utter gash and if we have to play him regularly we are royally fooked!

I don’t suppose it’s part of the squad transition this season? New keeper, 2-3 of the back 4, 1 midfielder etc all new. Even midweek we had two new debutants and we’ll likely have another at the weekend. Hopefully over the international break we can start gelling and working on it, because it’s a systemic thing rather than a single individual. So I don’t think a boulder of a centre back fixes it necessarily.

Can't we just get Ryan to take the back four for an hour every week and drill them on set plays like TP used to?

He played regularly last season for Coventry, who were far from “royally fooked”.
