Women Football FIFA World Ranking
The new world ranking is out there and it goes like this
1) Sweden 2) Spain 3) USA 4) England 5) France
What do you think? I'm pretty pleased by that. They count all games and a bunch of tournaments when doing these type of rankings.

I don’t get the hype around the women’s game. The standard is not that which you would see in the 9th grade of English football. Each to their own.

Have you never watched non-league or junior football? And if you have, do you stand there thinking "this is nowhere near as good as the Premier League"?

I don't understand why people like yourself keep posting stuff like this, no one is forcing you to watch it but being able to have heroes and something to relate to for the women and the young girls growing up is massive. It comes across like you think it has to be on a level where you think it's acceptable and entertaining to watch when realistically you're not really the target audience much in the same way you're not the target audience for a teenage rom-com at the cinema.

Within a month (22 Sep) the top 2 on that list meet for a game in the Nations League.
You have to win your group for a start to be able to advance to the football tournament at the Olympics in Paris, France, in 2024 - next summer.
Someone wrote in the World Championship 2023 thread that Spain, like France as hosts, already have a place at the Olympics.
Lucky Sweden then, since Spain obviously are a good team, technically brilliant. So we might have a bigger chance to advance.

Perhaps the North West Counties league should be on our screens?

Colombia at 22 and Nigeria at mid 30's show how much the gap is closing.
Wouldn't be surprised if the US are struggling be in the top 10 by next World Cup.
Scotland 23rd but hopefully going in the right direction with the access to the WSL. Would argue we're a top 20 side but conversely we're nowhere near Colombia who'd piss in the top 10 for me.

I don’t see why such a fuss is made over what is? People on this board need to learn to read. I said each to their own- but I’ll tell you this, there are for more heroic professions than kicking a football.

The debate in Sweden focusing on how to keep going and continue to be #1. Other countries develop and they naturally have an easier task of doing so, since they have been behind for that long, the potential to develop is larger then, so to speak. We won't see that many 10-0 victories in the future among the top 50 or perhaps top 100 teams in the world, and that makes it more fun to watch. I do believe Sweden have to take a gold medal next time to keep the number one spot, and do well in the Nations League, win the group.

And as I just wrote above, Sweden has to get a gold medal next time to continue to be number one. Sweden being number one was a bit of a shock here in the media. We've never been that before.

Perhaps the North West Counties league should be on our screens? More pertinent did you watch any of the matches or did you just assume they wouldn't keep you entertained? Or are you saying that a world cup shouldn't be broadcast? That women's sport such as athletics or tennis shouldn't be watched because they are not the same standard as men? Half the world are women and the standard of women's football is improving. The number of shocks and the fact that the African and South American teams were very good made for an entertaining tournament. For me it was far more entertaining than the Premier League when you know before a ball is kicked that after 40 matches one of at most five teams will be Champions.

Where did I say any of those things? I said “I don’t get the hype”, I think that the standard is English 9th tier and” each to their own. Go and grow up.- clearly wisdom doesn’t come with age.

I don’t get the hype around the women’s game. The standard is not that which you would see in the 9th grade of English football. Each to their own. I don’t give a shit about women’s football either. I also don’t give a shit about basketball. I don’t go out of my way to tell people how much I don’t give a shit about basketball. But a lot of people go out of their way to tell people how much they don’t give a shit about women’s football. Putting “each to their own” at the end of your post feels like a bit of a disingenuous way to legitimise what’s essentially a tired, unoriginal dig at women’s football that the people who actually do give a shit have heard a thousand times before and can do without.

You have an overactive imagination. I don’t get the hype over women’s football. That’s it- I watched some of the World Cup and to be honest didn’t find anything exciting about it at all. Would you like me to lie and say “wow!” As I said, each to their own, because a lot of people like it. My opinion is it’s massively overrated and if the public in general thought differently, a lot of women’s teams would be regularly playing in front of 4 figure crowds; the bigger teams do- the likes of Stoke don’t.

England are second. Sweden third, and so on. It’s like saying that, after a thorough analysis of all games played over the season, Man Utd are the best team in England because they won more friendlies and the FA Cup.

That’s fair. It’s not necessarily for men. I imagine that a lot of young girls are inspired by watching women a decade or two older than them go out and succeed. That’s a huge market to tap into for businesses: one that up until recently has been massively ignored. More people watching = more money. More girls enjoying sports = more opportunities for them to grow and make friends. Where is the downside to any of that? Not every single major product on tv has to be catered to me. That’s why multiple channels exist.

I'm no expert but how are Sweden number 1? England won the Euro's a year ago and reached a World Cup final a year later and Spain are world champions... rankings are bullshit.

As an at the moment picture. Rankings are made with consideration to the time aspect. Even if I don't think so, not at all, but let's see if Spain are a one hit wonder. Sweden beat USA. That was crucial for the rankings AND beat Japan by being a better team, Japan considered best in the tournament then. Sweden have 12 medals from the big tournaments historically, World Championships, Olympics and Euro Championships. 12. There are very few countries competing with that. Sweden have got a medal in all of the last four big tournaments, the two latest World Championships 2019 and 2023 and the two latest Olympics. 2016 and 2020. Noone else have achieved that. So they look at stability, but still a surprise to us.

I don’t get the hype around the women’s game. The standard is not that which you would see in the 9th grade of English football. Each to their own. It’s not there to be compared to men’s football. If you’re doing that, then you could say the same about rowers, runners, throwers etc. It’s the best women footballers at the pinnacle of their sport. The games are getting more and more competitive and they are often entertaining. It’s the same sport as the men’s. The top women footballers should be as respected as the top women tennis players, Olympians etc.

They are a breath of fresh air for the game, they have a superb coach and like it or not Women’s football is well and truly here to stay. You don’t understand the excitement fair enough, but 33 million people in uk who watched the final would suggest that hype is probably a poor description. More like excellent is a more apt description and it doesn’t matter that the standard falls short of men’s high level football.

I don’t mind it but do resent it being force fed down our throats by the likes of Sky?! Why do they put women’s league ahead of the Championship when looking at league tables for instance?

But doesn’t sky "force feed" most sports down our throats if you choose to watch sky tv. I really have no interest in tennis but every year bbc is completely swamped by Wimbledon "rammed down our throats" for two weeks. Personally I just don’t watch it but would never suggest it’s overhyped as many people do tune in.

Maybe horse racing shouldn't be forced down people's throats as it encourages gambling because let's be honest nobody watches horse racing because it's fun. There's nothing more sexist than saying women's sport whatever it is doesn't belong because it's not at the same level as men. Sky sports isn't just for men and neither is sport.
