It’s a no win situation…
If they manage to beat us, we won’t hear the last of it.
If we dick them as we should, we have a stand that requires repair, and bogs that need replacing.

I really can't believe how many Stoke fans never want to see us play Vale again. Can you imagine a Man City fan not wanting to play United? Can you imagine a Liverpool fan not wanting to play Everton? Can you imagine a Rangers fan never wanting another Old Firm? It's madness. Derby's are about as exciting as football gets. I grew up on Potteries Derbies and I miss them. I remember my whole body tingling at the atmosphere. I remember the joy of scoring and the pain of conceded about 10 times more than a normal match day. It's was exilerating. Why the hell do you boring lot not want that again?

The Potteries derby might be pretty lame compared to others, but it's the only one we've got, and if you can't appreciate the excitement of a local derby I really don't understand how much enjoyment you can actually get out of football. Of course it's sensible to say it's a no-win for us but it's nogger, why's it got to be sensible?

As someone who is in favour of the occasional derby, the flaw in your post is every single example you’ve given is a staple of the football calendar, and (Man City vs Man Utd aside) has been for the last 70 years. Better examples to use would be Sheffield United vs Doncaster, West Brom vs Walsall, Crystal Palace vs Leyton Orient or Coventry vs Northampton. I get that the Stoke vs Vale geography is unique to being a 2 team city compared to my above examples. For us to be on the same footing as Vale would see a monumental drop from us. And as underdogs we go in with everything to lose and them nothing to lose. Should the day come again when we’re on an equal footing i’d obviously pinpoint the 2 fixtures as the highlight of the season, but it’s wrong to expect people to yearn for them at the moment. We should be aspiring to make Wolves our big derby of the season in the top flight. Not our tinpot neighbours in league one.

Man U v Man City Liverpool v Everton etc are rivalries that go back for 100 plus years of playing each other season after season, 2 clubs that have competed together for decades, similar in size and have real rivalry. Ours doesn't. Both had a brief spell when we crossed paths but that's about it. I don't even look at their results and never have and never will. It's like Wolves giving a toss about Walsall, Leeds giving a toss about York City. We know what will happen off the pitch as they would have a point to prove there and even the discovery and wonder of seeing a sink and an inside toilet won't change that. I really don't get the desire to play some basement league club because they're up the road. Let's have say an Everton, have a decent away following and go up against a tough outfit even though they will make changes.

Just seen 150 spotty faces Stone Island clad Crewe fans being escorted to Longport Station by at least 30 riot vans. They’d need to quadruple that if we draw the at Vale Park…… That's one riot van for every 5 Crewe fans. Well done them, I must admit I didn't know they had a 'firm' ! By the way, how can you lose 2-0 on penalties?! Would you not have to miss 4 in a row?! The Crwho fans were probably more excited when they were at the train station

Your problem with that though is that derbies have to be reciprocal or they're not derbies. Wolves will never see us as a main derby, they'll always see West Brom, Walsall, Villa and Brum as bigger fixtures before they even think of us. I think it's a bit hubristic to think anyone else cares about us enough to have us as their main rivals- like it or not it's only those Burslem scrubbers who hate us enough.

Weirdly I think we're much less likely to draw them in this round than the last one.
Got 8 more teams coming into it and the draw is no longer segmented into North and South.

Normally I’d not be that keen purely because the run we’ve been on the last few years has been disastrous and Vale beating us would slot right into that story.
However, we’d absolutely spank them if we played them now. So go for it.

I personally agree with the "no win" situation about playing the Vale, but it would still be brilliant if we did draw them.

Bizarre how many fans fear playing these clubs. I'd play them in the cup every year if I could. It's not fear, it's just no good can come of it. It won't end well. We play at their place, it gets smashed up again. They play at our place, it gets smashed up. It's more trouble that it's worth. Neutral ground - play it at Northwood Stadium.
