Last winter we did a bit of gorilla gardening and planted a dozen Black Poplar saplings around behind the village in the hedgerows in the lanes, will have to wait until the bracken dies back to see if they have survived. Black Poplars are now an endangered native tree, once again, man ruined it's habitat and chopped most of them down.

In 1992 I planted a lime tree up Barlaston Downs over some ashes of a wonderful old dog I had who had died. For the first couple of years after I planted it I had to cut back the bracken so as not to stifle its growth. Today it's mahoosive and doing what I intended; giving out life to the world, which was the whole idea of why I planted it. From death comes life and my old Trudy lives on.
OS.

Great thread! Trees are amazing beings that deserve considerably more respect from our species. I used to work for The National Trust and found myself forced to leave after the job required me to cut down innumerable amounts of them in the service of raising revenue for the various estate's on which I was working. I am happy to have planted many trees in the subsequent years.

My favourite image of a tree. You go to somewhere like the Pacific Northwest and the size of them blow you away, then there's this thing. And people talk about 'carbon capture" solutions. It's right there in front of you.

My lad who was rewilding the island off Mauritius had previously been in Madagascar, working with the Lemurs and other stuff there, on an island just at the top called 'Nosy Be' the main town was called Hell-Ville it looked idyllic but it was quite poor, and some of the photos of the massive Orb spiders he sent would have you sleeping in the ranger station with one eye open. I didn't see any of those trees on his photos, probably wasn't a big enough place ?

[/L There should be a council scheme doing this for humans, it's what I've told my lot to do with me, any fruit tree will do, I'm not arsed 😄

I've grown 4 really healthy oaks from acorns collected from the valley that the railway operates along. I've still got my brother's ashes who passed away last November, he'll be joining one of the oaks on his favourite part of the railway when we both volunteered in the 70's. The other three have got assigned homes as well, they don't half grow quickly.
I dont wanna talk trees lets talk the size of your garden. What Wildlife do you get in it?
No badgers, lots of bird life, squirrels, massive numbers of slugs, and the moles are a pain. Currently there's goose grass growing everywhere and the dogs keep getting covered in those tiny velcro like balls that come off it. It took me an hours grooming tonight to get them out of their fur. A large garden and no gardener is a bad combo But, there's five lovely trees to make it worthwhile.
