Closed and turned into flats Pah. That’s appalling unless they intend to build a better one. Down here in Devon the county council are withdrawing the 4 mobile library services they have which has been a lifeline to outlying and remote communities. Here in Brixton we are making moves to set up a decent book swap probably in our church. I’ve seen some really good ones set up in old red telephone boxes. Problem is we have a defibrillator situated in ours and the ambulance service have said not to double up on its usage.

The problem is that this government has forced this selling of of assets across the country because of the cuts they have inflicted My area they are having to sell of assets to fill holes in finances caused by the lucrative contracts they gave to themselves to avoid the government setting their budgets I think in the last 2 years they have had 65 million in central government cuts as all London boroughs as the Tories want the mayor job so trying to make it look as though it's his cuts when it's theres same with tfl etc

Always very sad to see a library go, its replacement will no doubt be smaller and offer less. I think as a society we value reading and libraries less and less, and what we value in its place will no doubt be some ghastly brain dead shite. I believe the basement of Hanley library was going to be the seat of local government in case of a nuclear war. I wonder if there are any interesting Cold War artifacts still in place?

at least the building is being saved, some interesting mid-century modern features the developer will no doubt rip out and put in a skip.

Libraries are one of the most wonderful things in human creation.
As a bonus, they are usually chock full of librarians.

Libraries in England generate at least £3.4bn in value a year through services supporting children’s literacy, digital inclusion and health, a study has found. Researchers at the University of East Anglia discovered that the services that a typical branch provides in a year are worth £1m, and that libraries’ value could equate to six times their running costs. The report, published on Friday, should be a “gamechanger” for how libraries are viewed by “local and national” decision-makers, said Isobel Hunter, chief executive of Libraries Connected, the charity that commissioned the report. “The evidence is clear: investing in libraries brings huge returns for local communities and the public purse.” Alongside financial analysis, researchers also conducted visits to libraries in the east of England and interviews with library users and librarians. They found that libraries offer “holistic provision” and are “incredibly flexible and responsive to community need,” said John Gordon, who led the research project.

The town still has other libraries?? It’s being relocated - lovely old building. What a waste. Isn’t the building a concrete cast thing? Brutalist was the style I believe! Could be completely wrong Lovely buildings they are not What happens in a library is lovely though, my daughter loves a trip to the library with me and choosing books, brightens my day when she asks to read a story with me instead of sitting with her head in the tablet on YouTube.
