Peak Pulis-ball is the most exciting times I've had watching football.
Pulis' failure was largely down to not effectively replacing Etherington and Pennant. Some targets that didn't come off for various reasons - like Yarmolenko and Sanchez - could've made things interesting (though I wouldn't want to change those Stokealona performances under Hughes).
P.S. I didn't realise we'd signed anyone. Scanning thread titles and there is no sign!

Chris Greenacre would have been a Stoke legend had he not gotten badly injured in his debut pre season game v WBA, then played as a winger by Pulis when he returned with less pace.

There is no such thing as a 'core Stoke City identity'. Most clubs don't actually have a singular 'identity' in terms of the style of football they have played across most of their history.
In the 1930s and 1940s we were a good side and the 'identity' of the squad was having a £1 team that was overwhelmingly recruited the local area.
Under Waddington, we were quite an attractive and attacking side.
The idea that Stoke City's core identity as a rough and tough side is an identity that has come and gone in different periods, and mainly stuck in people's minds recently because that was how we played in front of the international media during our PL seasons under Pulis.
Most sides outside of the truly global elite, who have the advantage of consistently being able to play attacking football because they are always so dominant in their domestic leagues have real 'identities' that last decades. Think Barca playing passing football under Cruyff or Guardiola, etc. etc. Or Man United being associated with fast-paced wing play.
Truing to rebuild a squad based around some imagined 'core identity' after we got relegated has massively held us back. It's what has convinced the board that signing proven British players was the answer and has been disastrous for us. We'd have been better off adapting.

Should’ve kept Bardsley. Should’ve played Affelay more. Should’ve gotten rid of Allen and Adam. Butland should’ve gone in the relegation summer. Campbell is a bit of a softie even though he has real talent.
Possibly not controversial but my two penneth.

For all the fantastic football we witnessed in his tenure I believe Mark Hughes set this club back years eventually(with some help from above also) with the 3 horrific signings Wolly, Imbula and Wimmer? Or not Wolly but Badou?? All 4 were huge disappointments imo

I think we should have made more of Cameron Jerome. Big , fast and strong, he was a real handful, who could destroy a centre half or full back on his day . I remember, when he came on for Stoke 3 Southampton 3 , 17 year old Luke Shaw , who was looking class until then, really really didn't fancy it . Yes I know compared to Arnie and Shaq , dodgy first touch and erratic finishing. But the age he was when we went down, had he been here , he could have done a Job for us in the championship. A real handful and borderline unplayable at his best ( a bit like Ric only with a lot less skill and a lot faster) Not perfect, but selected for the right games , subbed on at the right time , could have been handy . Probably the only "impact player" we've had, always thought he looked a handful coming off the bench against tired defenders. On paper he was the perfect strike partner for Jones but don't really remember them getting much game time together.

Agree with what you say but I don't think the identity thing has ever been internal. It's more come from the media and the wider world. I mean fuck there are people who still apply the old stereotypes to us despite it being 10 years now since Pulis left! When people use terms like "the stoke way" and "the west ham way" it makes me want to throw rocks at them.

Tuncay should have been used more. The most anti Pulis signing going. But yes he absolutely should've played more. His goal against Man United was a thing of beauty.

My current feeling is that tricky Ricky and Neil are doing us over and don't really give a flying shit for this club. Time to turn their wonderful rhetoric into real action, or are they too busy compiling the excuses? Or is that too controversial?

Nzonzi was a lazy showpony. Kitson was the most shabbily treated player by the management I'm aware of at Stoke Allen carried the team the whole time he was at Stoke and was the most unfairly disparaged player by the'fans'

I wonder if this is what they meant in our relegation season when they put out a statement saying " We need to regain our identity and focus and the summer will be spent doing this." www.stokecityfc.com/news/club-statement-16It would make sense to interpret it that way when you consider who we went on to sign and for the money we spent on them. But maybe they didn't mean that, I'm not a mind reader.

I remember being in the Portland House pub in Hanley one lunchtime in 1989 when the news came out that Alan Ball was taking over as our manager. I said I thought it was a terrible appointment, with everyone else in the pub disagreeing with me. No internet in those days so face to face discussions were far more interesting and generally more civil. It wasn't a pub I regularly used (I can't remember why I happened to be there on that day), so I resisted the temptation for a return visit to say 'I told you so', when it all went tits up.

Or not Wolly but Badou?? All 4 were huge disappointments imo Wollschied was fine. Him and Shawcross were a good partnership through much of the peak Stokealona season. He only cost £3m too. Badou was a massive waste of money all things considered but did play well for us at times, including weirdly under Jones in the Championship. The three absolute horror signings were Wimmer, Imbula, and Berahino. £50 million combined on those three…

The Crouch signing was the beginning of the end of Pulis. We needed a more reliable, more consistent version of what Jones brought on his increasingly rare non-sleepy days. Someone mobile who could drag defenders all over the place and create space. Having an isolated Crouch up front made us easy to play against in that system. No idea how anyone could argue against this tbh. Not controversial in the slightest.
