He definitely means John Clarke. We used to call him "boof" because thats what he did every time the ball came to him. Shocking player (yes another one!) I'm going to say he means Geoff Scott. He was very blonde and very 'Bambi on Ice' for us early days.

Geoff Scott? He was a good defender though. That's him,you just knew he would put it out for a throw in. The name Scott must be jinxed for Stoke, one couldn't keep the ball in play, the other couldn't put it in the net.

And Mills signed another called Ian that couldn't seem to get a game ....though I think he did score at Brighton at the relegation party...then he disappeared.

The Mitre Delta Magma purred off the boot😀 That shirt!! Omg it had to be the worst material our shirts have ever been made from, was horrendous to wear when part-taking in any type of sports activity. This even edged that yellow le-coq shirt we had in the Prem for dodgy material. Albeit the absolute worst was that green Asics away shirt we introduced when we moved to the Brit. That had a double layer of the most shocking material ever, it was like wearing a jumper. The weight of it used to proper chauff the nips whilst playing footy, worst Stoke top ever for nip rub especially with the massive cardboard like Stoke badge it had on it! Makes me squirm even thinking about it now! Nostalgia, but not for the right reasons for me..! I had both and I cam confirm your memory is well intact. Wtf were they thinking. Nice to look at horrendous to wear.

"every time he booted the ball up field it always went out for a throw in?"
Sounds like part of the job description for a Stoke full back in recent years!

Have we ever had a right back who can pass the ball forward?😂 apart from recently sterling and hoever. Even in our pl days with Cameron shoved at right back and wilko we still had right backs who couldn't pass toffee.

Spoke to a Dundee United fan this summer who confirmed Clarke has legendary status up there, scored in two separate games v Barca All back when Dundee United were a really decent outfit and when SPL was a better standard than English second tier He was absolutely shocking for us An extreme example of how players can be good at one club and bad at another Sheron is probably best example of player being shit, 'miss it Mike' he was called at Norwich, simply sublime at Stoke The halcyon days when we used to turn other clubs shit strikers into liquid gold. Now we turn their platinum into filthy pewter. 😭

I'm sticking with the late Geoff Scott. Has 2 entries in the 'campest football picture of all time' competition. One with Brendan O'Callaghan and Paul Randall and the other with Garth Crooks.

Any clue on the era? If more recent we had a crazed Austrian bloke in our relegation season, Moritz Bauer. He looked like a man swimming lengths while a water polo match was going on around him. Here he is... He was my pick for captain when we got relegated and turned out he was staying 😁. Which goes to show even the great ones get it wrong sometimes... I blame Rowett. Bauer would have been more than good enough for a promotion pushing team in that 2018-19 season in my opinion. Spending god knows how much of the wage budget on Martina the August after extending Bauer’s contract was one of the bad decisions that went under the radar imo. Presumably because having 3 right backs wasn’t quite as insane as having 85 central midfielders.

Martina is in a very select group of players I've seen play for us where I will go to my grave believing I was a better player than them.

Was Dicko a right back on occasion? Always remember a crunching challenge in the first few minutes against Sheffield Weds at Hillborough, which probably warranted a Red card.
He didn’t get sent off and he turned to the away end and the look on his face he knew he was lucky to still be on the pitch 😆
