I’m using the same kind of reasoning as is used (and has been shown to be true) about which kidnapped children stories are picked up and carried on in the media. If the kid is photogenic and/or from a wealthy family, they get more air time. Here, a bunch of wealthy people did something stupid and it’s EVERYWHERE all day. Do you, by any chance, remember the story about the trapped Chilean miners 15 or so years ago? Live coverage dominated every major news outlet in the world for hours and days on end. They were 33 dirt-poor workers from cursed little South American towns that nobody had ever heard of. (subsequently portrayed by Antonio Banderas and the like in Hollywood movies) What makes a story particularly captivating is… the story. Not the bank balances or social status of the unfortunate wretches involved. I do, I remember that there were 5x more people involved (>30) and that it was ran by a State-owned company that had received fine after fine for violating safe working practices. Beyond wealth, severity and incompetence are sure fire ways to get attention. You only have to look at how celebrity news dominates to see that wealth is a driving factor but I’ve distracted this thread long enough, so I’ll leave it there.

I can appreciate why it's such a story and feel sorry for all on board, especially if they are still down there suffering, but it's just astonishing that anybody would even dream of doing it. I can see why these things might interest people, but I'd say it's rather more morbid than interesting. I think if someone gave me a 99.9% chance of it going without a problem I'd still be telling them to fuck off with their mental idea.
Hopefully they are somehow found and rescued, but you just can't see how it's even remotely possible.
It's news when it shouldn't be news, because that sort of exploration shouldn't be a thing.

It’s no wonder the worlds so messed up when politics / trying to compare victims importance wealth overrides people dying / being murdered.

It’s no wonder the worlds so messed up when politics / trying to compare victims importance wealth overrides people dying / being murdered. What's a sad state of affairs is it's the power of the media in choosing which stories are newsworthy, and whether you like it or not this is often for reasons of class or race. This is often reflected in how much resource is or isn't thrown at a case by the respective authorities. It's why 700 dead migrants is barely newsworthy, and it's why the world knows who Madeline McCann is but not the likes of Elizabeth Ogungbayibi, Sean Iregi and Heydari Nastaran. Anyway back to the topic I hope the people involved are found very soon........

These are people rich are poor and it’s very sad if they lose their lives as they’ve done nothing wrong. They’ve not robbed or hurt anyone. Just because they’re wealthy it doesn’t make them a bad person. For all you know they could donate thousands to charity. They all have families and loved ones why deflect from what is potentially very sad story. On a positive note and something I’m sure you’ll be delighted about. Recent reports suggest that those on board have been sending SOS signals from the sub so hopefully they could still be alive.

What makes a story particularly captivating is… the story. Not sure it's as black and white as that PL, the sheer numbers involved in the Chilean Miners episode would most definitely have contributed to the media attention the story received. If there had been just 4 or 5 of them, I'm not at all sure it would have been a 24 hours news story. In the same way that a coach, train or plane crashes warrants far more media attention than a single car crash. Let's look at an extremely recent example, down on your continent, just a couple of weeks ago, involving similar numbers to the lost submarine. Plane goes down in the Colombian jungle and when located, they discover that 3 kids under the age of 13 and an 11 month old baby are missing and have obviously started walking through a jungle infested with poisonous snakes as well as large predators and they haven't got any food and water. The hunt was now on to find them, before time ran out. Now to me, that sounds like the most captivating story that you could imagine but the news channels remained silent until the kids were found some 40 days later. Thing is, these were indigenous children and their indigenous mother had been found dead at the crash site. Now let us imagine if the plane had been that of a wealthy American Wall Street banker who had been found dead at the crash site and the kids lost in the jungle had been HIS 4 kids, then I kind of suspect the world would THEN have been watching rolling 24 hour news in the search for THOSE kids.

I don’t disagree with many of the general political observations being made, and I don’t disagree that the media use certain stories as distraction techniques (government decision to officially acknowledge UFOs in recent years makes me cynical about “why now?”) ….. but jesus cunting christ do you fuckers ever take a day off? It’s staggering how many threads become politicised. It doesn’t matter the disparity between the peg and the hole, if it’s at all possible then this forum will find a way to jam it in there…(and the same applies to political points from the other side) Honestly, I think this is a huge story simply because it’s morbidly fascinating. It’s a disaster and horror flick playing out in real time. It’s the perfect story for modern 24hr news cycles. Occam’s Razor. Media organisations are businesses and they’re responding to clicks. plus even now after all these years the titanic disaster, all the plots, sub plots etc makes for fascinating reading. You can spend hours on the wikipedia rabbit hole reading more and more. Its a huge story I actually spent a lot of time last night reading the Wikipedia page on the sinking of the Titanic. It is just eerie and fascinating to really immerse yourself in everything that happened from the seemingly innocuous impact to the rate at which things escalated and the horror unfurled for everyone. Just to be there in the ocean and witnessing this gargantuan ship snap in two like a Kit Kat stick must have been something to behold and haunt you for the rest of your life. How some of the survivors were able to carry on with life without chronic PTSD is incredible.

To be fair Cobs, I haven't see one person suggest that they're bad people or claim that they've done anything wrong because they are wealthy. As far as I can see, the only criticism has been for the media (specifically) and their criteria for what makes a story newsworthy.

Almost every thread of any length on this board goes slightly off-piste before generally veering back towards the specific subject in hand. That's the beauty of it, it can be annoying or to be fair it can often make the thread but ultimately it's a football message board we're not knocking on the door of the victims and asking them for a class debate. There's other threads where people end up bickering about all kinds of shite, I'd argue that's far more of a problem................

But yes there are certainly all sorts of other (sometimes random) factors that determine whether and how extensively a news story is covered, I’m not saying it’s an absolute meritocracy

It's one thing being certain of someones passing, and another not knowing or simply waiting. These minute by minute countdown updates by the media must be horrific for the relatives involved.
The deaths of those on the boat heading to Greece is even more horrific, but is for another thread. A lot of questions need to be asked about how to prevent that happening. Probably more political and geared toward the prevention of crossings than anything else. It's clear that the boat was overcrowded and these smuggling gangs have little regard for human life.

Surely it’s about showing sympathy to the victims that’s important in the aftermath not politicising how the press wouldn’t have given the story so much attention if the victims weren’t students or millionaires. I can just about get my head around the comments re the sub incident but around what happened in Nottingham I just felt the comments really aren’t appropriate having read about the victims and clearly what nice people they were. Maybe i’m just a bit prickly.

For the story to be "Newsworthy" to Media there has to be a subplot to get readers interested and talking about it. In the first story there were up to 700 desperate people willing to risk their lives for a better chance in life. The follow up about a dozen Egyptian Smugglers arrested The current story is about a handful of VERY wealthy people and the limits they are willing to risk their lives in search of an "adventure" most average people couldn't afford or wish to take part in. The third story you have introduced was about 2 University Students, the non photogenic Caretaker was a third wheel, who were first reported to have been murdered by a West African Immigrant The common theme in all three stories is Class and Wealth, or the lack there of it. They are not political stories unless you want to stretch Wealth or Poverty to Politics, which could be valid but not the "Hook" the Media chose The loss of life in all cases is tragic especially to the families concerned but what is "interesting" to the inquisitive Public is the circumstances with the Media only too happy to oblige.

Hard to imagine how terrifying it must be for them, knowing they are so close to am inevitable death. The total panic, fear and ultimate acceptance of death via lack of oxygen must be too unbearable to imagine. What I'm confused about with these tourist Submarines is do they not drop you in the ocean right above the Titanic or do they leave you some miles out to find it? I was reading that they drop you right above, but then you are at the mercy of underwater currents (at multiple levels) in the ocean that can drag you miles and miles off course - apparently their guidance / propellence system is operated via an X-box controller?!? Madness. "Well what do you expect for 200,000 nicker?" Absolute cowboys.

It's an event that is extremely unlikely, unimaginable to nearly everyone and has a tragic irony to it. It's absolutely nothing to do with distraction or wealth, despite what people will say.

If they've panicked they'll be dead by now. I know it's difficult - massively so - but they need to have rested as much as they can and slept for as long as they can. When you're asleep you only use half the oxygen as when you're doing stuff. I know they're all rich folk but my heart goes out to them. They'll be experiencing the same things that many of the submariners suffered from during WW2. It's horrible. OS. At this point with less than 24 hours of oxygen left and little hope of rescue, even if it’s located, then I would hope that the vessel suffered catastrophic hull failure at depth. If this happened then the crew and passengers would not know what was happening and have no time to evaluate their predicament as death would be instantaneous.

If you haven't seen reporting on the Wealth of the Submariners or the Family backgrounds of the Nottingham University Students you haven't been paying attention. Of course the Boat People are anonymous and the Caretaker murdered on his way to work largely airbrushed out of the story. I don't know about you but I don't get to read every single post on here, I dip in and out. Cobham's was the first I saw which introduced The Boat Drownings, Nottingham and The Titanic Adventurers in combination and that I thought was an interesting contrasting dynamic. Are there other posts on this theme?

I just hope they survive, I don’t care how wealthy they are, they’re human beings like the rest of us and this country has gone down the shitter when it comes to respect for each other

Of course they are tragedies, it's why I said they were. I've seen no disrespect personally just people debating on a message board........
