Started supporting stoke in 1970. He and Gordon Banks were my all time heroes. I was gutted. Brilliant player. Though Arnie was better. Tin hat on. Annie better than Greenhoff??? Each to their own but.....behave.

Jimmy couldn’t do half the things Arnie could. I still loved Jimmy to bits and a brilliant player in the 70s. Arnie better for me. Think some old uns have rose tinted glasses to be honest. Bit like saying the Vic was better than the Brit when it was a complete dump. Again though. I absolutely loved the Vic. Everyone to there own I sopose.

Each to their own but.....behave. Arnie played well when he wanted to play well (eg when he was new and when he wanted to attract other clubs), when he didn't he played like a donkey. Greenhoff, on the other hand, made 100% effort in every game.

Don't think I've ever experienced anything like the collective anger of Stoke fans for weeks after we sold Jimmy. Christ, it was an unpleasant time. Topped off a few months later by our relegation and Manure winning the FA Cup with our player.

Arnie shouldn’t be used in the same sentence as Jimmy in any context, no comparison whatsoever, not fit to lace Jimmys training boots, let alone match boots……you know what you know.

I’ll second that a million times over. To have Arnie’s name mentioned in the the same breath as Jimmy Greenhoff is insulting, like comparing a rusty 3 wheeled old go cart with a Rolls Royce. Never even close to being in the same league as Jimmy….GREENHOFF GREENHOFF GREENHOFF!!!!

As for Arnie being unplayable, give up..Ricardo was unplayable, Huddy was unplayable, Chamberlain was also unplayable initially…Arnie was a greedy, arrogant show pony who was decent when he fancied it which wasn’t often enough.

However, you are 100% correct when you say Huddy made Jimmy an even better player. The two of them playing together at the top of their game was poetry in motion, a real joy to behold!

Man City at home , Man untied at home , liverpool at biome Fulham at home West Ham away , stoke away for West Ham suggests he could be pretty unplayable with the best of them but the were both brilliant players for us Greenhoff is a legend because he was a brilliant player , better with Hudson and a lovely man who loves the club to this day

Arnie didn't show up consistently enough for me where as Jimmy performed for almost a decade....no comparison for me. Jimmy is as you say a club legend. Arnie is not.

Those who were fortunate enough to see Greenhoff will remember his tremendous passing, volleying, heading ability and speed in the box his link up play particulary with Hudson was second to none.
Different to Arnie if we could have kept Arnie one more season we would have stayed up he was very good with different attributes

Alan Hudson said he's never played with anyone as available as Greenhoff. Hard to compare different eras and players. Arnie was brilliant when he wanted to be but Arnie played more for Arnie. Jimmy played for Stoke.

The England team should have been built around the Hudson / Greenhoff axis, nothing short of magical.

For example Arnie had one of the best first touches I have seen and Jimmy's volleying was second to none. The difference was in their attitude to the game and towards their team mates. Arnie had games when he was totally brilliant but he had other games when he frustrated not just the fans but also his team mates. On the other hand, I can't really recall a game when Jimmy left the pitch having given less than 100% to try to win the game. This didn't just endear him to the fans, his team mates never seemed to feel short changed by Jimmy during a game. Lovely player and a lovely man.

Also the reason why I said you can’t compare……..Jimmy played his era on some atrocious pitches which wouldn’t be even allowed nowadays eg (Baseball Ground) and was subjected to X rated tackling which again isn’t allowed nowadays.

And a gentleman too. I recall an occasion when I was buying tickets for the next game at the Vic just as he was getting into his car. He greeted me like a long lost brother when he could equally have just ignored me. The loss of the roof of the Butler Street stand was a defining moment in the history of the club.
