Ive just read that Japan has just raised its legal age of consent from 13 to 16 amongst other sex laws. Now I knew about the Vatican having low aoc laws(quelle surprise) but it just shows how other nations view this sensitive topic.Their rape laws are also a little strange compared to what we have in this country. Just an observation.

I think age of consent is a weird one. In the US its 18 and the UK is seen as condoning sex with kids. The age of consent in the US varies by state between 16 and 18 and for the majority it is 16. It's a tricky area because it's not just about protecting children from predatory adults - there is also the question as to when two young adults are allowed to have consensual sex with each other. Is it right that two 17 year olds might end up in court because they had "under age" consensual sex? In practice legal and ethical responses are more subtle. Most people would say an 18 year old having consensual sex with a 16 year old is ok, a 20 year a bit dodgy and a 30 year old way out of order. Equally not many people are going to be overly concerned about two 15 year olds having consensual sex. You can't really codify those subtleties in a single age if consent. In terms of Japan I think the consensus across the world is that 13 is too low for an age of consent and is probably a reflection of Japan still being hidebound by tradition. The need to change their laws on rape is also a welcome reflection of a desire to move away from some very sexist attitudes to women.

However, that is murky and really just applies to cross state sex with those under 18 it seems. In the US, there’s also protections I think for “not-too-far”, I.e., 16 vs 20. Those will surely be adjusted by State as well. Still a good chunk of the US would see sex with a 16 year old as immoral. Unless it’s Elvis, then it’s just ignored. Edit: I’m sure that everyone on here could agree that 13 is way too young though (I hope).

The legal position is more pragmatic and I suspect not that different to the UK except maybe in the bible belt?

Most of the belt is 16 or 17 actually. According to the evening standard (I know): The countries where the age of consent is 14 include: Brazil, Columbia, Peru, Paraguay, Ecuador, and Bolivia, Germany, Italy, Portugal, Hungary, Austria, Serbia, Albania, Bulgaria, Estonia, and Montenegro. www.standard.co.uk/news/world/ages-of-consent-around-world-countries-laws-japan-sexual-abuse-b1061907.html# So, Japan aren’t the only developed Nation that still has young ages for consent it seems. I’m surprised by a number of those names.

I don't know enough about the legal systems in the countries you mention but the age of consent in isolation might not be the only legal protections against child sexual exploitation.

Under Catholic Canon Law the legal age at which you can get married is 16. In Nigeria however the age of consent is 11 So the legal age of consent is 14 if married. I'm not sure what point your getting at. There are about 800 clerical citizens of Vatican City of which about 450 reside. I don't think any of these are getting married to a minor.... not saying they wouldn't engage in sexual activity mind. Vatican City is bound by Italian Civil Law in respect of marriage which says you must be 18 or 16 with parental consent.

I’m surprised by a number of those names. Not that it makes it any less weird for us adults to comprehend but I believe most of those countries have slidng scales i.e. it isn't just a case of anyone at all of any age in Japan can sleep with a 13 year old. It's something like 13 if sleeping with someone up to 17, 14 if the partner is 19 etc In most countries where it's a low age of consent, it's still illegal for most grown adults to indulge with someone when they reach that age. You have to be within a few years of their age (much like the "Romeo and Juliet" law in the US, so they don't arrest a 16 year old for having sex with a 15 year old). Still weird as fuck though and massive questions about future mental health, attitudes towards sex and/or women and children should still be asked. Us having a blanket rule of "as soon as you turn 16, you can sleep with anyone else over 16, even 60 year olds as long as consentual" isn't actually that common around the world.

Sexual activity can be consented at 14: www.ageofconsent.net/world/italy It seemingly raises to 16 if they have a “position of power”. …..I’m likely going to be on some sort of watch list after googling age of consents so much 😂

It's interesting though. Not necessarily the subject matter itself, more the way it's so casually (and misleadingly) reported in the media in other countries, by them just coming up with a bullet point headline of "Age of consent 13" without then bothering to explain all the different caveats/clauses etc. that come within that bullet point, so everyone just presumes the headline tells all.
I think it's less to do with sex and more to do with superiority complexes of Western media i.e. disinformation in the news so we all think they're backward/savages/outdated etc. and aren't we the morally superior bunch in general.
Having said all of that, it still feels weird that kids would be doing that in places like Italy, Japan etc. even with other people their own age. Although maybe it's just me and because (not ashamed to admit it) i was 18 before i did it, or because i've been brainwashed by the Western media to believe everyone is wrong and they're all cave dwellers compared to us, as mentioned above.... No idea which but it still doesnt change the fact that regardless of the legal apsects, i'd still be really worried about future mental health impacts and i'm really not sure how much thought has gone into that. I may be wrong but I expect very little and they're just tweaking laws which are centuries old, when no-one knew about or cared about long term mental damage to children.

Us having a blanket rule of "as soon as you turn 16, you can sleep with anyone else over 16, even 60 year olds as long as consentual" isn't actually that common around the world. It isn't quite like that - there is legislation in the UK around people in positions of power, grooming and coercion when it comes to sex with anyone under the age of 18. A sixty year old (or a thirty year old for that matter) having sex with a 16 year old is going to get looked at very carefully by the authorities and friends and relatives are very likely to intervene - in practice it isn't a free for all for predators. There is the issue of the young persons perspective - at what age should someone be deemed to be able to consent ie make personal decisions about what they can do with their own body? Is it fair on a 17 year old to deny them the right to make those sort of decisions? You might argue it's for their own protection but equally they could argue they consider themselves mature and want to make those decisions for themselves. Actually "the age of consent" is more about the rights of young adults than child sexual exploitation and in a way it's wrong to use the age of consent as the primary legislation for protecting children from predators. That needs to be covered by other legislation and needs to be way more subtle than defining a particular age.

The need to change their laws on rape is also a welcome reflection of a desire to move away from some very sexist attitudes to women. The US has close in age exemptions but I don't think europe does. Although, I think there are guidelines regarding sex between consenting minors and/or teens with age gaps stipulated etc as to what is acceptable and where prosecution is not recommended. The age of consent in many euro countries is 14 and 15 in even more, so we are a bit behind the norm for Europe.

From experience of family members, its quite common in the UK that teens want kids to a) have something in common, and b) not have to work, and live off the money from social. Maybe UK girls have lower self esteem and use kids as a means to tie down their blokes? I don't have a vag so it's hard for me to comment in this. I just recall my sister trying to have a kid at an early age without any real thought of marriage.

At the risk of tarnishing my Woke credentials I pretty much agree all of that especially social acceptance as the norm rather than the exception Coupled with poor education in school/home to equip for modern life, in part from unwillingness to engage in open discussion of consequences No great surprise US and UK tops the League in the developed world There is no one single cause but poor economic circumstances, unhappiness at home/school and low future expectations are a common thread The reduction in family values/unit in a media influenced socio-sexualised society is another determinant The problem is the behaviour is self-perpetuating and leads to a generational poverty trap.
