I am only posting this as I haven't seen any other threads congratulating that East London outfit on their awesome achievement in winning the European equivalent of the Freight River Trophy.
Congratulations you lucky bastards.
Lots of BBC coverage of this momentous victory and the associated celebrations. I heard several East End Londoners interviwed tonight and I must say that these apparent supporters of "Weeessst 'Am" have a tremendous grasp of the English language an al' that, innit. You know wat I mean!

Sorry LordB. I just always regard the 'ammers as being lucky mainly because I can remember them surviving a financial crisis time after time and walking away, such as the Carlos Tevez third party ownership affair. And walking into a huge new stadium for practically nothing. There have been several times competing in the transfer market when they claim near bankruptcy, and then walk away having spent more millions on new players. Yes lucky. You couldn't meet a nicer bunch of lads this side of Hackney marshes.

No fan of the Hammers myself, but fair play to ANY English side that wins a European Cup👍. Are you a keen angler?

I thought Sevilla had won this competition a week ago and did not realise there was a game on last night until I saw the air waves were full of diamond geezers 'giving it the large one' as they say.
I guess there must be 2 of these sub-Champs League competitions running now.
Who knows which, if either, is the main one...

I assume you must have youth on your side to not remember the origins and evolution of EUFA Cup Competitions Initially there was the Champions League which was originally reserved only for the Champions in each Country until it was extended to include e.g. in Premier League top four teams You also had the EUFA Cup now renamed the Europa Cup which was for teams that finished below the Champions Then you also had the European Cup Winners Cup for winners of Countries Primary Cup Competition this is being referred to currently as West Ham won this in 1965 their last European Trophy This was the Competition Stoke would have entered if it had not been merged to become the Europa Cup. Sadly now runners up in FA Cup no longer qualify for any European Competition only winners or League position and if Stoke were to repeat that feat would not qualify for any European Competition Last season West Ham qualified for Europa Cup by finishing 5th in Premier League and went on to the semi finals. This season having finished 6th in Premier League they qualified for the relatively new Europa Conference League Cup which was introduced to slim down the numbers in the Europa League The inaugural winners of the Europa Conference League were Roma managed by Jose Mourhino who was so chuffed he got a tattoo to celebrate the occasion. West Ham are now the current holders and as a reward qualify for Group Stages of next seasons Europa Cup HTH

The Inter-City Fairs Cup or The Fairs Cup was not a EUFA competition at all it was a FIFA Competition As the name suggests it was a Tournament open only to Cities which had hosted Trade Fairs and only to Cities which had one Football Club. It was by invitation only I.e. not based on League Position Some Newcastle fans cite their win in the competition in 1968/69 as the last "Major" Trophy they won rather than go back to the 1955 FA Cup, but no serious supporter.

Northy: "Assume you must have youth on your side as the champions league was originally called The European Cup wasn't it ? Back
The original European Cup was the Premier European competition, and as stated was competed for by the elite clubs who were each Champions in their own right in their home countries.
The European cup was dominated by English clubs in the 70's, being won by Aston Villa, Nottingham Forest twice, and by Liverpool a few times.

I thought the coverage was way over the top given the low prestige of the competition and it seemed everyone in the crowd had been born in the shadows cast by the floodlights at the Boleyn Ground.

Didn't they merge the UEFA Cup and The Cup Winners Cup to form the Europa League? As a kind of streamlining exercise. So we went from 3 competitions down to 2 and now 3 again?

Now its Rubin Kazan v Ludogrets or whatever.... Bring back the WINNERS of the respective European leagues for the European Cup I say ! (Never happen though)

Is it just a reinvention of the Intertoto Cup? I remember Chelsea playing mid-90's in the snow against Tromso or someone like that, and I'm sure that the Intertoto was the Cup Winners Cup of the 1990's.

The Europa League is definitely the bigger of the two, because 1) the winner qualifies for a Super Cup game vs Inter in August 2) the winner qualifies for next season's Champions League, even if that team, theoretically, were relegated from the countrys first disision (which hasn't happened yet, but it will one day).
