The Smallbone experiment has been the worst and most disastrous feature of the season for me. We have played someone else's player week in and week out with no benefit to us whatsover, so other players have not been given opportunities, or the chance to develop. He was always going to go back to Southampton, and apart from 4 or 5 games has been totally out of his depth. Now he goes back to Southampton at least knowing how this League works and will probably be more effective in it next season. Develop which players exactly?

Develop which players exactly? Smallbone played well for and earned points which saved us from the jaws of the gravity alligator. I’m grateful for that.

I cannot believe that those stats are correct? 5 assists? 3 of them in one match at Sunderland? The 7 big chances stat is a bit misleading. According to Opta he made 70 chances in total - so only 7 were clear cut ones. And there were a few games he was shunted into deeper midfield. Still, he flattered to deceive really.

He was the king of slowly gliding around the pitch attempting to toe poke the ball from opposition or simple 5 yard passes. Not really the main creative power that you need to get promotion.

Average at best. Never got the hype that was on here.

Its fucked up Baker's Stoke career for a start, and it basically meant the end of Powell's Stoke career too. Two players who were doing well for this club until we introduced Smallbone.

His best attribute for the team was being able to win the ball high up the pitch. Against teams that kept and passed the ball he played well in the attacking role, but against long ball teams he was pointless.
Neil never really worked this out...
