2021/2022 - 6th place got 75 points 2020/2021 - 6th place got 77 points 2019/2020 - 6th place got 70 points 2018/2019 - 6th place got 74 points 2017/2018 - 6th place got 75 points 2016/2017 - 6th place got 80 points 2015/2016 - 6th place got 74 points 2014/2015 - 6th place got 78 points 2013/2014 - 6th place got 72 points 2012/2013 - 6th place got 68 points (5th got 72 points) So, even if we managed to win every game, we'd only make the play-offs 30% of the time (and even that may be on GD) based on the last 10 seasons. In short, there is no chance. We'll drop points over the next two games anyway IMO (win Friday, draw Monday). However, this strong finish to the season could just be the catalyst. Players will want to join if we finish off rampaging as we currently are. I reckon we'll finish on around 66 points. Off topic slightly but relitive …..Bizarrely we actually won automatic promotion in 2008 with a points total that would normally only just see a team scrape into the playoffs Funny old world and anyway back on track 😊

We won’t win all our remaining games. It really is that simple. We won't, no, though on the face of thing it's a real shame because it's quite a straight-forward run in really.

Funnily enough, the team in 2012/2013 who got 68 points was Leicester who then remarkably went on to win the league the next year with 102 points and then the PL two years after that. That'd do nicely.

We’ve scored 3 or more goals in 7 of the last 14 games. I don’t remember us doing that before. did we do it under Mills 86-87? we scored a shedload in that run Best was 6 scores of three or more in 14 games. This included 7 vs Leeds.

Do you have all the info you've gathered over the years stashed in some sort of archive March? Or is it all in your head? It's pretty impressive either way, but if it's all just memory then that's some effort 👌

Under Durban in 1978, we improved considerably and set the scene for the following season’s promotion.
So what happened in the final 7 games of that season?
2 wins, 3 draws and 2 defeats.
I suspect we will beat that this season.

You said it’s unheard of. In this context (Stoke City) it’s unheard of. No it isn’t . . . Longest sequence of League wins: 8 (30 March 1895 – 21 September 1895) That run of good results was spread effectively over 2 seasons. I remember that 1894-1895 season well, with Stoke setting a trend that they were to subsequently follow many times in future years, having had a dismal pre christmas run and then saving themselves with some important late season results when it mattered. Stoke had been having a poor season and by the end of February 1895 they looked destined for relegation. However Stoke made it in to the end of season play off match with a remarkable run of five victories and a draw in their final six fixtures. Goal average just favoured West Bromwich at the foot of the table who finished a position higher. In the "test" or play off match Stoke were paired with Newton Heath (later to become Manchester Utd). The venue was surprisingly at the football wilderness of nearby Burslem, where Stoke, backed by over 3,000 fans, won 3–0, two goals coming from Joe Schofield, who for the fourth season running was leading goalscorer, on this occasion jointly with Billy Dickson. That late season recovery was largely fuelled by the signing of Sunderland's Scottish forward, Tommy Hyslop who scored seven goals in seven games including a hat-trick on his debut against Derby County. Hyslop went on to be capped for Scotland whilst at Stoke becoming the clubs's first Scottish international.

It does make frustrating reading to think that both MoN and AN arrived at a point in their respective seasons that meant we developed play-off crashing form - too late to actually make the play offs.
The lesson? Maybe make the managerial change earlier. Yeah I know hindsight is 20/20 but....

I think it will matter. I think it will matter for the top 10 spot, which should really be our ambition at this stage of the season. Securing that would be a great indicator of things to hope for next year.

I think that you can take your figure at whatever point fits the argument. There is nothing wrong to use statistics that run over 2 consecutive seasons, but I personally would like to see single season runs as being the more significant, and carrying more weight. Black and white with fewer variable factors involved.

That 1895 play off match in Bosley was quite an experience. No buses running but 3,000 fans still made the trip!

Can't see us winning every game now, let alone a scenario where even that would create enough points to make the play offs.
What I am curious to see though is if a side high on confidence can break down teams that are likely to sit back and try to snatch a point. We've been crap at that all season so a couple of wins in those type of games would be welcome for next season.

Was AN available earlier in the season? He wasn't available when we got him😄 He wasn't. And we're not clinical/nasty enough to poach someone straight after they get a club promoted (in the summer). To be fair, I had my fingers crossed MoN would turn it around, but someone else might have pulled the trigger earlier.

Presumably every side that comes to Stoke here on in, with possible exception of Albion, will full on park the bus I think we will win all our away games , even at St Andrews where we haven't won since Bros were popular As you say the games v sides that defend deep will indicate how far we've come or not

I can't remember how attacking or otherwise they were, but it does suggest we are capable of overcoming the usual banana skins to an extent. Millwall did us over of course, for balance but, ridiculously, they are promotion chasers! Overall our home record is worse than away, so there is definitely a job to be done in at least getting a positive WvL balance there.

In 2019 Villa got promoted via the play offs after winning 10 of their last 12 league matches. Coincidentally their run of 10 straight victories came straight after we'd drew 1-1 at our place with them, the Gordon Banks memorial match where Vokes gave us an early 5th minute lead with a tidy back heeled opener! Villa went on a run of 10x straight victories before finishing with a draw and a defeat before the play offs began. This spell of straight wins actually began after Grealish returned from injury & was bang on form for them, it was him that propelled them into the play off positions. Rare to happen, and may not have won all their remaining games but to win 10 of final 12 matches shows it is possible. Still think it's a step to far for us this season but as others have said, let's just enjoy the run in & hopefully we'll have a few more victories to celebrate and let's just see where that takes us. Perhaps this season will end with us just missing out like the season we just missed out last time around, before actually gaining automatic promotion the following season. Remember being totally deflated at Loftus Road after only drawing with QPR and all the other results going against us. That day was always going to be a tricky one for us to sneak into the play offs and so it proved. But the following year we'd improved as a team and bypassed thr play offs to clinch a top 2x spot. That's possibly a more realistic ambition to achieve if we recruit well and get a good start under our belts when the season commences. I wasn't expecting the answer to be so recent to be fair. That QPR game was an eventful one for me, I didn't get back home until Monday afternoon, ended up getting smashed in that Springfield pub think it's called? Right next to the ground until 11pm, rough as fuck in there it was 🤣 Yeah, I remember the pub well, The Springbok in South Africa Road (it's now the Queens Tavern), there were a couple of rumbles with the locals back in the 70's.

Proper shithole but the locals who were in there that night were pretty welcoming of 3 Stokies on the piss, who then had to spend 2 hours trying find the car to sleep in cuz we were miles to smashed to drive home 🤣

Let’s start by saying we won’t win every match, virtually impossible. But Blackburn have eight games left and five against the current top 8 teams and Huddersfield away, who just beat middlesboro. Can’t see them reaching 72 points? We would have enough points if we won every game? I will live on cloud cuckoo land till we fail to win a game.
CUM ON STOKE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Although it's not mathematically impossible, the plus-sized lady has started clearing her throat.
Probably the most realistic route to sneaking into the play offs would be a combination of us winning most of our remaining games (too much of a stretch for me to imagine us winning all 8) and either Millwall or Blackburn imploding because, whilst we're 10 points off 6th place, we're only 6 points off 7th. If you're being optimistic, you could just about imagine us having a good enough run to claw back a 6 point gap, but not 10 points. We'd really need Millwall or Blackburn to go on a terrible run. I suppose if we're saying that there's often one team that goes on an amazingly good run, it's also feasible that one team can completely capitulate. I keep thinking/hoping Blackburn will be that team, because they don't look great to me (their goal difference is substantially worse than us). Annoyingly though, they seem to keep picking up results (although they have now lost 2 of their last 3).
Failing that, a points deduction for either Millwall or Blackburn would come in handy!

At least one of the current crop will drop out, and it looks like Blackburn are the most likely given the run they're on and the games they have left. I think Millwall will also drop out and both will be replaced by a side currently sat between 7th and 11th. If Blackburn's dip continues, I think we could probably finish above them, but there is no way a perfect finish and 72 points get us in there. About 8 teams would have to go to complete shit.
