Purchase new or buy one a couple of years old? Never owned one previously, anything in particular I should be looking out for if I decide to go second hand? But if getting new anything I should definitely add in as an extra to standard spec?

I've owned two vw transporter conversions - both from new. Neither one has ever missed a beat over a combined 120k miles.
My tips would be:-
Beware of how the fridge works, you need to be able to access them easily, but also clean them easily.
Get decent quality leather seats if you can, especially if you have a dog, they're much easier to clean and they stay smart for longer than cloth. as for extras - a decent solar panel and an invertor top my list.

We have a Ford Transit Custom camper, which was converted by Wellhouse Leisure, one of the best camper converters, in my opinion. I think the VW Transporter is overrated, and because it's smaller than the Transit, you have to be very careful with gross weight and being overloaded. Depending on budget probably best to go second hand, conversion companies have long lead times at present for new, even though the second hand market is over inflated at present. Ours is a 17 plate and still like new,it's worth trawling through Autotrader to have a look at different types of conversions and vehicles We love our Transit and will soon be heading to Scotland in it, not camping though.
