….it struck me that the club have got a huge task on their hands to start to get the support back into the ground.
Even if they managed to persuade an extra 1000 people to turn up it would still look empty.
I know you could say this of any club currently, but last night it really struck home the size of the task.

Do you mean an 'extra 1000'? You wouldn't even notice that many.
We need an extra 10,000 to get a buzz back.
I appreciate average attendances are declared as about 24,000 but the ground looked almost completely empty last night.
This is probably a controversial point but having kept season ticket prices so low for so long they are now so cheap people buy one on the off chance they might rock up for 10 or 12 games. This applies particularly to concessions.
Dons tin hat!

The situation reminds me of the old 1970's joke about the football commentator on the local Radio doing Scottish League matches, who used to start his match coverage each week by saying "I'll just run through the crowd changes!"
I think the last time he was heard of was in negotiation for a similar job at the Vale.

It’s not as simple as winning team = bigger crowds
We are in a financial crisis and many are really feeling the pinch with heavy utility bills, rising mortgage costs and just general cost of living, football is an expensive luxury that is just going to be out of reach for many, yes they could stretch and pay but is the product worth paying for currently?
Hell a winning team does it

Official to punter " What time can you get here?"

Times have changed. Anyone with a dodgy box or a laptop can watch the game from home for nothing or next to nothing.
And if it's shit they can switch over and watch the best 2 teams in England or the Champions League.
Put that choice up against the faff of getting to an evening game and sitting freezing and it's little wonder people duck out when we are playing crap.

I work all day in Crewe to earn enough money to pay for the £20 notes I have to set fire to to keep the house I don’t own because I can’t save enough for a mortgage to buy it because of said bills warm.
I’m not going to then spend even more money absolutely freezing my cock off watching Morgan Fox trip over a football, not a chance.

The whole City is struggling at the moment and people have little hope sadly ,so it was bound to affect the leisure /sport industry at some stage.

If season ticket holders are counted regardless of attending, then last nights crowd shows we only have around 15,000 ST holders.

Good football and a train station! Don't need a decent train station. A well organised and properly planned park and ride would do the job.

I think the last time he was heard of was in negotiation for a similar job at the Vale. Some years back I saw Steve Harley at the Victoria Hall with barely a 100 in the place. He grumbled about the promotion and advertising for the gig then proceeded to play a cracking set and with a grin said that he'd be on first name terms with the crowd by the end of the gig.

Hell a winning team does it I appreciate that some people are struggling but football crowds across the country have not typically fallen. Which suggests to me it’s footballing success first, economic factors a distant second in terms of significance.

If you’re only going to a limited number of games you end up paying the equivalent of a matchday ticket. It’s all about where you sit and who you sit with and by the way I’m doing 14 on my ST so I’m almost staunch. Obviously back in the days of terracing I wouldn’t need one (ST) anymore and could pick and choose my games, that way I think I’d do quite a few less games as I’d probably watch night games in mid winter on tv instead.

Should we (unlikely I know) reach the FA Cup final we will have 40,000 fans who have never missed a game after tickets. 🤪

It’s bound to lead to smaller crowds. All fans have different levels, some hardcore who will watch any rubbish, and then the rest that have a certain level they’ll drop off at. Don’t blame the fans for the smaller crowds. Blame the idiot in charge.
