Guarantee if the club came out and said to stop singing Delilah, the more Stoke fans would sing it
As for the original words "I felt the knife in my hand and she laughed no more". I can honestly say I never knew it was about abuse the first place, perhaps I wasn't paying enough attention. I agree with most that its just more woke that is thrust upon us every day by the BBC and politicians (same ones that dodge taxes, refuse a pay rise for NHS nurses and teachers (but that's another story)) who are afraid of their own shadow.
I for one wont be partaking in the stopping singing Delilah as I love it

I think it's clear that they're not solely offended by the bad language really isn't it? The word 'dick' is not the problem, the sexual assault sentiment is. It's only a sexual assault sentiment if you are determined to make it so. The phrase has to have similarities with the original song or it doesn't work. So, "I felt the knife in my hand" becomes "I put my dick in her hand" but the implication is that the said dick is so large/ impressive that she would be receptive rather than scornful. There is certainly no real suggestion of any violent sexual assault, It's actually a piece of humour. Again, I say, if people can't handle stuff like this then it's up to them to avoid putting themselves in such situations instead of expecting everyone and everything else to change to accommodate their particular sensibilities. The police came to break down the door after he did it though, or were they coming to arrest her for adultery?

Not bothered about it one way or another, the one I absolutely hate is "we'll be with you." Completely cringeworthy.

I have to be honest the ‘I put my dick in her hand’ bit always made me feel a bit uncomfortable. Even more so since becoming a parent. I always thought it was a missed opportunity…. “Stein/Ric put the ball in the net and they laughed no more’ would have been the job imo. I don't sing that bit anymore personally and feel the original words are fine.

I'm not that bothered by the offensive lyrics in it (and let's face it a knife compared to a dick), there's far worse being sung at grounds, far far worse. I've never felt it's really anything to do with us, and for that reason I'm happy to see the back of it. That and the fact the opposition always seem to score whilst it's doing the rounds. Your bracket highlights that arguably the original version which is about murder in a fit of sexual jealousy ( and has not so far as I know been banned by radio stations etc) is worse than the stokie version. Personally, I don't like either, and, as you say and I said above, it has nothing to do with football, the City or our club. maybe not initially but it became part of our clubs identity and too erase it would be a shame i guess, nobody as far as i can tell has said the fans cant sing it in the stands there will be a massive police operation at the next home game and 99% of the crowd being ejected from the stadium

One of the few songs we have and virtually the only original one (We'll be with you is a song written for Radio 2) and some people want to bin it off
Sheesh

Sorry lads, I love Delilah as much as the rest of us but I think there’s a fair chat to be had about it. We live in a world where there is an unacceptable amount of sexual abuse - I’m not sure we can brush off using a line where a dick is stuck in someone’s hand as banter and woke bollocks. The older is get the more I’m starting to grow a conscience about it It's the over sexualisation of women on Instagram, TikTok and the whole influencer lifestyle that should be targeted. Not to mention how quick, easy and free it is to access hardcore porn these days. a few thousands stokies isn't going to encourage us all to go and commit sexual abuse mate, come on. Proper over thinking it. It's not that though is it - the "dick" line is hardly making some female fans feel the Bet365 Stadium is a good place to be, especially young girls being taken to a match for the first time. Songs can find their own life whatever they're meant to be about and even take on a different meaning to some, and many people (me included) don't really notice or think about the lyrics. So as for the actual Delilah lyrics, I'm sure there's far 'worse' that gets played over the tannoy (insert joke about not being able to hear anything on the tannoy anyway). Every Breath You Take is a popular song at weddings, yet it's about stalking. Enola Gay by OMD is another popular track people dance to, yet it's about a bomb that killed around 200,000 people. The Welsh RFU ban is for the original Delilah lyrics, and I'm not sure what to think. It's kind of ridiculous, because I'm sure most people in society know it's a character in a song, and that's even if they notice what the lyrics are about. Some of the most popular childrens cartoons of all-time are violent, and we know it's not real. Again, I'm sure 'worse' songs get played in the stadiums. The Welsh RFU has much bigger issues to address than banning choirs from singing a song, and they seem to be doing a poor job of it so far.rf

The elephant in the room is Stoke fans have slowly been moving away from it naturally anyway. Even before we were shit and had nothing to sing about, it was not what it once was. It should only be sung when we score and the primary reason we are moving away from it is because we hardly ever do that !

Very few football songs have a particular relevance to a club. What associates "I'm forever blowing bubbles" with West Ham? What makes "You'll never walk alone" unique to Liverpool? For whatever reasons Delilah has been adopted by our fans and I hope will be associated with Stoke City for all time.
God forbid that it should be that "We'll be with you" codswallop

Christ.
I first heard this sung standing on the old Stoke End, circa 1987. Just a handful of lads belting it out after we'd gone a goal behind, as was the norm back then.
This song is one of the few pieces of authentic Potteries terrace culture this club has left. As the game becomes ever more commercially sanitized I cling to things like "Delilah" harder and harder.
There are people on this thread saying we're "moving on" as a culture. Take a look around you: we're really not. We're regressing at a rate of knots.
And to those who say "what's it got to do with Stoke anyway?" I have an easy answer. It has *everything* to do with Stoke City and absolutely nothing to do with the complacent corporate behemoth that is the club in its current form.
Some things are ugly and sacred at the same time. Take heed.

Just change the words from "I put my dick in her hand and she smiled no more" to "I put my dick in her hand and she smiled SOME more" perhaps that would be acceptable

There used to be one on YouTube from after the first Autoglass final which was audio only, a radio feed. Just the crowd singing unaccompanied, slowly building.. eventually it was so thunderous the commentators had to stop talking because they couldn't make themselves heard. Absolutely spine-tingling.. that was always the definitive Delilah for me. Doesn't seem to be up any more, which is a shame.

I think you are right. The world is rightly changing on such things. I know the Club has had some complaints about it from parents and women supporters. Personally, I much prefer "We'll be with you" - a unique Stoke song, written by Tony Hatch and Jackie Trent for the 72 LC final, which not only has a great tune but uniquely captures the relationship between the team and the fans. For me, that's our anthem. If everyone had to stop doing stuff because some people complained about it, not much would get done. True, and has anyone at a Stoke match ever said to ANYONE that they are offended by this song? I doubt it!

Can I also chuck Green Day's "Time of Your Life (Good Riddance)" into that mix? Lyrically a bitter break-up song, but apparently hugely popular at Weddings (in the US mostly). I think I read somewhere it was the most requested Wedding Song in 1998
