It's why your not a manager/coach more like. Any manager/coach who turns a blind eye to his defenders not being very good at defending isn't going to be in the game very long - their team will get ripped to shreds. The idea that the modern game is all about attacking and defending is old hat is just nonsense. The only time they are okay with it is when the good far outweighs the bad. TAA was phenomenal going forward for a while. This season, he’s been much worse and has still been crap defensively. I get an attacking fullback is going to get caught out occasionally but it really has to be occasionally and not an accepted feature of their game. At the very top level a systemic weakness in your defence is going to get exploited and your team isn't going to achieve much. Attacking fullback is probably the most demanding position in football and very few players can actually do it well and if you haven't got one who is really good at it isn't even worth trying - either play wingbacks or a flat back four and give the midfielders/wingers the attacking duties.

Arnold gets totally unnecessary criticism. In their title winning season he provided the most assists in a season and is a terrific footballer. He’s now being asked to change his approach by the manager and looks lost. He’s not a good defender but he didn’t need to be under Klopps “heavy metal football”. Now it’s all gone tits up for Klopp he’s a major scapegoat for the decline in the team. TBH I think he should leave, he’d be mint in La Liga or similar. Jury out on Hoever, hope he does well He’s being exposed for being a defender who isn’t very good at defending. It’s not even a case of being caught out on a counter, he’s not even doing the basics on deadballs or crosses. It’s not all on him though you’re right, but for some of the comments saying it’s not his fault he can’t defend is funny. You don’t play a defender with the expectation that you’ll just out score the other side, they should be competent defenders first and foremost, TAA like many modern fullbacks has been exposed a fair few times.

so he needs game to get up to speed play him in the reserves then oh there is no reserve team football & they rarely arrange friendlies so the only way for him to get up to speed is play in the first team before he's anywhere near ready we saw this with Sterling yesterday who had by far his worst game but clearly nowhere near ready Should be up to speed just as his loan ends then😉 indeed it's a wank system bring back reserve team football (in addition to U21 football) get players playing football

Are the rumours true, that when the Premier League was formed the players in it considered themselves to be too big and too well paid to have to "suffer" playing reserve football? If so they should have been told that their contracts specified that they had to play for the reserves if they were not getting picked to start for the first team regularly, and at times when they were returning to fitness after an injury. Reserve football would also be a useful development "bridge" for younger players between the U21s and the first team. Those days when the bigger clubs could pull in crowds of several thousand for reserve games seem to be an awfully long time ago.

I seem to remember it being about the smaller clubs not being able to afford all the transport and logistics involved in a reserve league and it was decided to concentrate on a 'youth development' league (U23/21's) with a few over age players allowed to facilitate returning injured first team players. And rather than use reserve teams to blood emerging young talent into 'men's' football clubs now use loans to lower leagues.

Although primarily for U21 players, I believe up to five over-age players can be included in a team.

He literally had 10 mins or so. But you know when you watch a player and think, hmmm not sure about this one. The way he moves about doesn’t seem very footballer esque. Very harsh for 10 mins I know. But not convinced. Plenty of Wolves fans have seen a lot more of him and weren’t convinced either. Has a really bad rep for his attitude and is a poor trainer, apparently. Does our dressing room need him just now? Sounds to me like the sort of player who, back in the day, would fail TP’s DNA test. I’d love to know what this legendary DNA test for character involved. I mean how did he pass it himself, he’s as crooked as the day is long the man couldn’t lie straight in bed.

Have you not literally described Spence when Forest signed him? Let’s wait and see shall we? Spence was still a first team regular at Boro before joining Forest. He just didn’t suit Warnock’s outdated style of football. A modern, forward thinking manager like Cooper turned him into a £20M player overnight. Three top flight clubs have decided Hoever is a waste of space and barely given him any time on the pitch. Spence would have been an amazing loan, and he’s available too! Isn’t available for free though like Hoever though.

That’s fine, it’s ok to disagree with someone. Apparently I should have qualified my response with evidence of how good he is going forward. So on that, yes he has a goal and an assist this season in the league, good for him. I don’t apologise for being a pragmatist, the same as I don’t expect you to apologise for being idealistic. I don’t call half a season a ‘bump in the road’ though. Each to their own, I do think you’ll be upset further if you read the general consensus of non Liverpool fan’s opinions of his performances this season.

But there is a world of difference between a team which has a minimum of six 21 year olds (and under) in it and a true reserve team composed largely of first teamers who are not getting regular games. A reserve league would be a good way of getting young players used to the rigours of adult football.

I won’t be upset I’ll just think how quickly they forget just how effective he is in a team that’s functioning as it should. Liverpool aren’t functioning too well this season. I hope it’s transitional as they have been in the last few seasons my favourite to watch( that from a kid who grew up in the 70’s detesting Liverpool). I’d be the first to admit that the Klopp approach very much appeals to my idealistic mindset. I believe the game is pointless if it’s not enjoyable.

You've every right to be an idealist but you really can't complain when us pragmatists point out your are living in a fantasy world because by definition that is where an idealist is and wants to be.

Players may have once derided the idea of playing for a B team, but that feels less likely to be the case now. I’m sure there are LOTS of decent players that would rather earn a fortune playing 1-2x per year for Man City and spend the rest in their B team, especially if you let them into the football league.

Forcing clubs to take an allotment of loans and play them is a big step in the direction of feeder clubs. Once you've given up selection and style of play there really isn't a lot left. It would be a natural progression after that for them to own the club next.

It might not be that he meant it as such, but that’s how I read it. The Championship is a league of its own and the clubs in it aren’t supported by fans who just couldn’t get PL tickets that weekend.

On a previous post on this very page you literally said you have an "idealist mindset" - if that isn't being an idealist what is? I agree we see the game from a completely different viewpoint and you are perfectly entitled to go and watch football on the basis that you like to be entertained. The problem is when you mistake what you want it to be with what it actually is - the hallmark of an idealist. Just because you want to be entertained doesn't mean that football is primarily an entertainment business - it might be what you want it to be but it isn't what it is. Football is first and foremost a sport and everyone who plays and manages treats it that way. Competitive sport played well can be entertaining and the best teams are entertaining because to win they have to out wit their opponents which happens to be entertaining to watch. The thing is footballers don't have to go out there thinking they have to entertain. They go out there to do their best to win the game and if it comes off more often than not the end product is entertaining. If a game isn't entertaining it's because two teams have cancelled each other out or your team hasn't played well, not because they've forgot that their priority is to entertain.

Being described as an idealistic liberal sits much more comfortably with me just so long as I don't have to act it out.

Being an idealist sounds far too all encompassing and permanent, to me an idealist would be idealistic generally and as I've explained I'm not. I'm also conservative and liberal at the same time, conservative in action, liberal in view though I'd hate to be described as conservative. Being described as an idealistic liberal sits much more comfortably with me just so long as I don't have to act it out. So basically you're views are vague, illogical and completely inconsistent. That I can believe. No I just don't believe your views on any issue define who you are. Things are compartmentalised so whilst I could fairly be viewed as quite dour that's the last thing I want to see on a football pitch. I believe in the legalisation of drugs but don't want to take any. I believe in equallity, outside my house. I'm happy for you to be religious, just don't tell me about it. etc etc
