I remember Northampton being like that, a night match in the league Cup I think, late 70s? Stoke chased Northampton fans onto the pitch during the game. Very eventful few cup games away at that time, including Charlton and Watford. I drove to the Northampton game having had no sleep the previous night - was doing an 11 hour night-shift at Kiplings. When I got back I was exceedingly tired. On a slightly different tack, in the promotion year a couple of us hitched a lift to Palace, and were picked up by an "unofficial" bus at Jct 15 on the M6. On the way back the bus stopped in Northampton and everyone piled into a bar. The Lamplighter since you ask. Buses carrying both Sunderland and Sheff Utd fans, also returning from games down South, had the same idea. There was much running up and down the street. By this time it was dark, and literally no-one knew who was who. Chaos. I doubt a single punch was thrown, but the police arrested a few, including a bloke I was at the time working with.

Following on from my initial post last week a good friend has asked me to forward three of his memorable grounds. Interesting! Fratton Park-Portsmouth. The Alice Cooper look alike fan wearing his Pompey tall hat always spring to mind. OK Guy. Brighton-Goldstone Ground. Relegation party. Mental weekend. Ashton Gate-Bristol City. Stoke fans singing Wurzel songs? (Tractors & Straw influenced) Strange one this. Vale Park-Port Vale. Leaving the ground the last time we played there to find most of the toilets in the car park!!! Thanks for reading. I have a feeling the Pompey Alice Cooper lookalike actually changed his named by deed poll so that it read First name Portsmouth FC Surname. The relegation party at Brighton is one of the all-time great awaydays. I am pretty sure there are photos on the "Those Were The Days" board. You are correct John Portsmouth Football Club Westwood He owns a bookshop in Portsmouth, a very nice intelligent guy

Par for the course back then. Exceedingly tired :-) One of our group got locked up at Northampton.

Who remembers the ghastly away end " cage " at the Dell Southampton ? I remember it well & the game was just as bad though we did get a point (One of only 4 we got away!) A 0 - 0 draw in the holocaust season. I think we lost every game but one until the end of the season - The only good news was it was a 2 -0 win against Arsenal.

I remember visiting Bramall Lane in the 70’s when Sheff Utd were top of the league and we won 3-2. Apart from the game my main memory was the cricket pitch and pavilion which occupied one side of the ground. Happy memories! Went to that one as well. Certainly strange with the Cricket side. Not such happy memories as it kicked of big style on the way back to our bus, remember thinking what was I doing there. Love Hilsborough hate Bramall Lane.

Who remembers the ghastly away end " cage " at the Dell Southampton ? I do. April 30 1978: Southampton are playing Tottenham Hotspur at The Dell in the Second Division. The steel mesh caging the fans is spoiling the view of the travelling fans.

Just seen a post on Facebook saying the Victoria Ground was going to be used to host a replay of the 1974 League Cup final between Wolves and Man City.
Geographically it makes sense.
Wolves won 2-1 so no replay was needed.
The Vic had been used for 7 FA Cup semi-finals in the depths of history.
