With the transfer window in full flow now with players leaving and hopefully some new faces coming in, it got me thinking about ideally who I'd like to join and in turn the football it could produce.
I'm interested to know what kind of team people would like to watch week in, week out. I personally enjoyed the Pulis-ball days, there was something about those days of being the underdog, the team no one liked and feared playing with the likes of Fuller, Huth, SJW, Rory and co. Equally though, the best football I've seen as a Stoke fan are the Stokealona days of N'Zonzi, Bojan, Arnie and Shaq where we literally went toe to toe with some of the biggest clubs in the Prem. So it got me thinking, if we had a clean slate, what kind of football / squad would you enjoy watching?
For me, I think we miss someone like a Fuller / Arnie. Someone who could collect a loose ball, be all by themselves and still produce a moment of magic. We seemingly have no-one at the club currently (Tyrese at a stretch) who can do this on a consistent basis.

Hard working, aggressive, competitive with strength, pace, power and stamina.
In other words, the exact opposite of what we currently have.

A team that can defend properly without making stupid mistakes;a team that can rapidly turn over the ball and set up attacking play; and a team that can play attractive football, score goals and win matches. In short: everything that we are not!. 😏

A ‘team’ and not the current bunch of mercenaries we’ve got!

Genuinely, when was the last time we had a player slipped in through on goal 1 v 1?
When was the last time a stoke player rounded the keeper to score?

One that wins a good proportion of its home games.
Everything else is window dressing.

A winning one first of all. However that can be achieved. Icing on the cake would be a forward passing exciting team, but I think that is more than can be expected under this manager.

I want everything
in no particular order
hard work, will to win, attacking football, good defending, creativity, good tackling, intelligent play, good skills, long ball, quick passing, dribbling, counter attack, dominating the opposition, last minute winners, early goals, players prepared to 'take one for the team', tough tackling, heading, good reading of the game (especially defenders) , spectacular saves, commanding keeper, leadership, young players blooded/progressed, experienced players not discarded, wingers (or anyone) taking their man on & beating them with 'end product' to boot, tactical flexibility, stability , aggression, calmness ,bravado, shots from distance, toe poke gaols in the six yard box courtesy of good build up play,8/10 penalties taken scored, 2/10 saved ....could go on & on
probably missed out some obvious stuff & as you can see some of the above appears contradictory however I believe all those things are required at some point or other & many of those things all the time
having said all that I just want I team I can get behind
it's been too long

Anything that isn't 3-5-2 for starters, the formation is killing us every game.
Clarke is not a capable RWB, he is a decent RB/CB at best. Fox is OBVIOUSLY not capable at LCB. Smallbone isn't creating anything. The CM isn't combative enough.
4-2-3-1 please, signing a winger, a keeper and a new CDM and a new striker now Delap has gone.

A team that is exciting to watch and scores a lot of goals. Everyone has ideas how that is best achieved but if someone can make it happen I don't really care whether it's in a way that had occurred to me. I'd like us to focus sharply on being one of the top scoring teams at our level rather than trying to mitigate being average at best.

When was the last time a stoke player rounded the keeper to score? Would love to see this again. Also… The passing and movement we saw for the goal at home vs Forest last season. A corner or free kick to be met with a Stoke player’s head or foot. A leader on the pitch that can raise a team when it concedes and won’t put up with the lack of courage/effort shown by certain players. A keeper that commands his area.

I want something that's clear and obvious. The current manager and the one before, although better than the previous, never really provide anything you can rely on. Nothing that stood out as being a clear game plan or strategy. No one player you know is your talisman turning up every week. It's all been very "nice" and wishy-washy, with no structure.
I really don't mind whether it's nice football, or based on being hard to beat and direct as long as you know that's what you're getting and it wins more games than we currently are. That's where we are now. Just find something that works, and stop trying to be clever with it.

One that wins more games than it loses, is capable of being entertaining and finishes in the top half. Not much to ask, just the basics and a platform that we might be able to build on. And definitely no 3-5-2 or 5-3-2. No variant of that formation has ever been successful at this club.

i think our best team in recent history was 2014/15, so a squad that has that kind of passion and commitment. recruit players that were born outside of Britain.

I don’t want much and am happy to settle for average, shabby mediocrity with a basic level of competence. I know it’s a huge step up from what we’ve got, but I don’t want to be greedy.

The team we were putting out at the start of last season up until the Albion game was playing great stuff.
Front foot, positive on the ball when passing it and dribbling with it. Playing at that point in a shape that largely suited them, I'm not fussed about any particular formation as long as it makes sense for the personnel you have. We had a solid enough defence with decent for the league wide options in Smith and Tymon. In the middle we had Allen holding (was never his biggest fan but he was ok in this role) Vrancic picking passes (the only midfielder we've had who has been able to consistently pick key passes from the middle of the pitch) and timing his runs well into the box or just outside and Powell ahead of him in half spaces making things happen and provided for the two strikers.
It was good football, with good variety and genuinely got me excited about Stoke for the first time in a while especially when we could have easily beaten a then top of the table WBA team 4 or 5-0. It's a shame it fell apart so quickly due to injury and some of MON's decisions. But basically anything along those lines would suit me, mainly intelligent players in adventurous roles backed up with a bit of steel and bollocks.
